LindorDoubleChoc · 14/03/2023 20:51

This starts Wednesday week on BBC1 (22 March).

Anyone want to join me on a thread about it? I saw some episodes of the previous two series but didn't watch them all and am kicking myself about it now because it really is such an interesting and beautifully shot reality series.

So am going to watch the whole of the next one - this time in Canada!

I understand Zainab and Mobeen find it easier to tell people they are vegetarian I have friends that do the same but I think that was part of the problem because then it seemed like they only revealed they were Muslim after getting caught out when they mentioned tuna.

I think once they got off the topic of religion they all got on fine and the hosts were kind and generous to them as they would be to anybody.

Yes and I did think 'Oops' when she mentioned tuna.

I'm still enjoying the programme though. Just think it's been hard work for the production company for this series.

What i don't quite get is not establishing your onward travel before going off site seeing -so the 2 ladies went up the Calgary tower. And missed a bus by 10 mins!

AbleCable · 12/04/2023 22:23

As they all made the same train, the only separator is bugdet, and there are some big differences there. It was a bit disappointing they didn't show the remaining budget chart at the end of tonights episode.

I remember on Series 1, a couple didn't have enough money left at the end, to take the lift up to the top of the Marina Sands hotel where the race ended. Another couple ended up going down and giving them ticket money so they could go up and finish their race!

OhVicIveFallen · 12/04/2023 22:26

Maireas · 12/04/2023 22:11

Yes, I know they caught it further up, but when they arrived at that train stop why were they disappointed? I thought they'd missed it?.

No they were disappointed because it had been delayed. They complained that they rushed to get to the train station for nothing. They caught it the next morning.

Maireas · 12/04/2023 22:28

Oh right, thanks.

IceandIndigo · 12/04/2023 22:28

I agree @LindorDoubleChoc, I’d like more focus on the actual race aspects of how the teams get from A to B and less Canada Tourist Board promotional footage. Every episode there are huge bits of the journey that are unexplained.

I think the reason the two friends got the wrong bus out of Banff was that they were focused on preserving their lead and getting the earliest transport out of town, not realising they would be better just to wait a few hours for the more direct option.

I did feel sorry for the Christian couple the way they were portrayed. Zainab said this was her favourite week so far so clearly the interaction wasn’t as awkward as was implied by the editing.

Taxi dad certainly living up to his reputation this week. Can’t decide who irritates me more, him or his daughter. Hoping they run out of money soon and have to go home.

Is it really the case that Canadian national parks “lock down” every time a bear is sighted?? I suspect that was actually a BBC security requirement, and wouldn’t be surprised if they subsequently gave Ladi and Monique a lift to the town with the train.

AbleCable · 12/04/2023 22:33

I would love if they had a corner of the screen with a map of that episodes section. They could have colored dots for each team which updated steadily through the show showing where the teams were in relation to each other. Depature of 1st team is Hour 0, then +1hr, +2hrs etc ...

Maireas · 12/04/2023 22:39

Good points, @IceandIndigo - I suspect Ladi and Monique were given a lift with them as well.

purpleme12 · 12/04/2023 22:46

So i'm halfway through and why on earth did it even go silent anyway after they said they were muslim?!!
It was almost like it was seen as this big revelation or something when really it was just an everyday fact wasn't it?!
It was so wierd!!
And the following comments were almost like they were expecting to convert them to their way or something. i mean i know some people are like that but god....

purpleme12 · 12/04/2023 22:50

I still don't 'really understand why pub dad's daughter lived with her grandparents rather than her mum or dad

purpleme12 · 12/04/2023 22:54

SwedishEdith · 12/04/2023 21:38

I wonder if they edited in the longer pauses with the Christians?

But Zainib said there was a silence didn't she

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 12/04/2023 23:03

Claudia is drawing out my inner complete-bitch.
She's such a whinging cow and her Dad is a fucking carpet.

She said her parents divorced? Maybe her DM was depressed at having raised Veruca Salt by accident and so buggered off, leaving her with the GPs.

This is a good example of what I said before.

purpleme12 · 12/04/2023 23:16

Locals leave their houses and cars unlocked in case they need to escape! Bloody hell!

They are the couple I've liked least in all three series.

I can't warm to the Dad in particular at all.

TokyoSushi · 12/04/2023 23:28

I love Zainab & Mobeen, she is just so cool and he is so lovely!

Claudia & the Dad are absolutely unbearable.

I enjoyed the episode much more tonight. Annoying how it keeps getting 'levelled' though by only one train/boat etc.

purpleme12 · 12/04/2023 23:35

Her name is Zainib not Zainab.

I can't quite work out what the deal is with Claudia and Kevin's relationship. I'm not completely annoyed by them like some people here

TokyoSushi · 12/04/2023 23:45

Thanks for letting me know @purpleme12 Smile

"pity we ran out of money. but what a good parent I am"

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 12/04/2023 23:52

Carpet... someone who is walked over easily. I just mean she stamps, cries and collapses in hopelessness at the drop of a hat and instead of telling her to get a grip, he happily forks out $$$$ because 'I can't see you reduced to that again' or some such lame excuse.

TheSilveryPussycat · 12/04/2023 23:50

"pity we ran out of money. but what a good parent I am"

Nailed it. Having apparently actively chosen to offload his sixteen year old child onto his parents because "I'm just such a free spirit, I couldn't possibly settle down". I've been very suspicious about the way he's getting the Villain Edit and Ladi gets Vaseline on the lens for the full hero treatment. But there comes a point where I can't fight the narrative any more.

I think it was unless other people need to escape .. so you run form said bear into someone's house or car. I don't think they just turn up in your kitchen while you're having a cuppa!

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2023 06:22

Re, living with grandparents. It's not all that unusual. Parents were publicans. I guess child and pub became even more incompatible when single. The mum doesn't get mentioned really so, however distant and damaged Claudia and Kev's relationship seems, there was obviously an irrevocable breakdown between mum and dad, and also daughter.

I think Claudia is probably much nicer than she seems. There was obviously an attempt to heal a broken relationship by doing this and perhaps both are struggling with being in each other's company so much. I'm amazed more of them aren't crying . I would be! And Kev clearly isn't used to having to negotiate or compromise. I do find it odd how quickly he wants to leap into a taxi, though. Perhaps he isn't actually bothered about winning.

I couldn't spend more than three hours with either of my parents to be fair... as someone who was brought up by utterly toxic parents, I can see why Claudia wants to put things right/reset and why it upsets her that it seems to be failing. I wish the programme had showed them more having good times together. But Kevin really isn't a hippy, rambling free spirit, however much he wants to be!
