Detectorists Appreciation thread

I knew about Detectorists but always assumed it would be a bit too gentle / suited for elderly people for some reason. Since starting it I've fallen in love with it and have binged the whole lot! Just got the recent Xmas special left to view.

What a well written, well cast, lovely warming show. Just what I needed this winter.

Anyone else came across this years later?

We were there from the beginning but I'm rewatching it again at the moment.

It's just great. It's a subtle comedy and absolutely warms the soul. I remember watching it during lockdown when we were all stuck inside and it really lifted the soul.

Toby Jones and Mackenzie Crooked are both excellent.

shockerrr · 28/02/2023 15:53

Yes they're great. And the other roles really well cast as well. I'll be sad when I've finished it.

The best series ever. Everyone should watch it at least once.

IglesiasPiggl · 28/02/2023 15:59

It is one of my go-to calming shows.

AlrightJulia · 28/02/2023 16:01

It's wonderful, everything about it is so comforting. And the music just finishes it.

FasterthanBolt · 28/02/2023 16:04

Absolutely love it and all the characters. My favourite scene is when Russell finds out how old Hugh is, it made me laugh out loud! I also love the relationship between Terry and Sheila, how much he loves her is so lovely to see.

MinistryMelody · 28/02/2023 16:39

Exactly the same as you. I always tho it was something I should watch, but never quite got around to it. Binged the whole lot last month. What I love about it is that quite a lot of the characters could so easily become caractures, but the quality of the writing and acting means they are allowed to develop into more rounded people. Such a satisfying watch. And don't get me started on the beautiful theme music.

MinistryMelody · 28/02/2023 16:41

*caricatures!

cushioncovers · 28/02/2023 18:38

Yesss I also avoided it as I thought it would be boring but then I binged watched it a few weeks ago whilst I was home ill and I loved it.

redundantsoon · 28/02/2023 18:41

It’s brilliant. But honestly, I wish they hadn’t bothered with the last Christmas special. It ruined it for me.

SpamhappyTootsie · 28/02/2023 18:43

It helped save my sanity during lockdown. We’d tried watching it when it originally aired but didn’t give it long enough.
The gentleness, the humour, the cinematography….just perfect.

MaryQueenOfSwots · 28/02/2023 18:44

I’ve been with it since the beginning. It’s absolutely lovely. However, no-one can do the correct accents.

PrinceHaz · 28/02/2023 18:48

I love it. I love the pastoral scenes, the music, the plots, the acting.
I just have a couple of issues- the main character’s partner is a bit too posh for him. I understand that their differences are what make them interesting as a couple; she just seems way too different.
Also, the child actor in the special was not very good at acting.

Eggsley · 28/02/2023 18:51

We discovered it recently and have watched it all now. Love it, so gentle and calming and just nice humour. Similar to Early Doors a bit in that sense.

AuntieDolly · 28/02/2023 18:52

Love it! It's like Dinner Ladies where you watch it over and over and find something new

BestIsWest · 28/02/2023 18:53

I love it. I think I’ve watched it three times now.

SoCrossAboutThis · 28/02/2023 18:54

I binge watched it during lockdown and loved it. Did not like the Xmas special as much.

wineymummy · 28/02/2023 18:55

If you love the music then listen to Johnny Flynn's albums. His first album A Larum is wonderful. He's an incredible musician and well worth seeing live if you get the chance.

Dodecaheidyin · 28/02/2023 18:55

Bloody love it, it's such a gentle, pleasing programme. I love the Simon & Garfunkel references.

SpamhappyTootsie · 28/02/2023 18:56

Also, the child actor in the special was not very good at acting.
They kept the same actor as Stanley right from being a baby. They seemed to treat him as much younger than he actually is in the Christmas special, which did look a bit odd.

Signing in. Will read thread then join in.
It's a glorious, warm, gentle series.
Apart from the Dirt Sharks. Traitors.

Oldnproud · 28/02/2023 19:02

I saw some good comments about it here on Gransnet a few weeks ago, so decided to watch an episode while DH was away one weekend. I ended up binge-watching every episode of every series over those two days Grin

Jorvik1978 · 28/02/2023 19:07

Off the back of this thread, I've watched the first episode this afternoon. It's glorious. DH is away on fieldwork next week so I plan to book some AL and binge it.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/02/2023 19:08

I really loved it, very sweet gentle comedy.

I was sad they didn't get their dream house in the end though 😕
