Detectorists Appreciation thread

I knew about Detectorists but always assumed it would be a bit too gentle / suited for elderly people for some reason. Since starting it I've fallen in love with it and have binged the whole lot! Just got the recent Xmas special left to view.

What a well written, well cast, lovely warming show. Just what I needed this winter.

Anyone else came across this years later?

It totally passed me by and then last year I discovered it and had the absolute joy of binging a series at a time and then had the Christmas special as a special treat.

I loved that Rachael Stirling and Diana Rigg played mother and daughter and how that was handled going forward. Rachael is very like her mum.

The only trouble was I didn't want it to finish.

KateAusten · 28/02/2023 19:12

Loved it and I was lucky enough to go and watch the play Jerusalem recently in which Mackenzie Crook and the guy that runs the Detectorists club were both in

WineWithAView · 28/02/2023 19:21

Oh it's just brilliant telly, isn't it? I was poorly over Christmas so rewatched it all before watching the Christmas special. Love it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 28/02/2023 19:26

Late to the party here too. We watched all episodes after Christmas. Absolutely love it.

Oakdog · 28/02/2023 19:28

My family all love it, having discovered it a few years ago. I think Russell is great, but also Sheila and Terry's relationship. The bit where Lance (I think) asks Terry if dancing is more important than detecting and Terry replies 'no but Sheila is' gets me every time!

GuyFawkesDay · 28/02/2023 19:28

Watched it from the off as I know people who worked on it.

It's an utter gem of a programme. Ditto Mortimer and Whitehouse gone fishing ( in a very different way)

Jackiebrambles · 28/02/2023 19:41

I’ve found my people! My parents recommended it about a year ago, not sure why I didn’t want sooner, but we eventually watched in early January and absolutely loved it. The music, the scenery, the mystical stuff, Simon and Garfunkel, the tart lemonade, wonderful comforting stuff.

I was listening to the theme tune on YouTube earlier today and noticed this comment:
"I'm a 68 year old American who grew up on TV since it began.
I am here to say that "Detectorists" is the finest television series of it's genre ever produced. I realize of course that it's a bold statement, considering the thousands of really great British, American and Global shows made in the last 60+ years. (Many might disagree with my opinion (and I realize that it's just my personal opinion and that my comments are not meant to create a "contest").
But I think we can ALL agree that Mr. Crook is a bona fide, cinematic genius (writer, producer, actor) of the First Order.
From his initial concept to casting, story line, script, pacing, editing, sets, location, music, lighting and MOST of all... that brilliant and sublime humor!

I just cannot praise this series and Mr. Crook high enough!

And Johnny Flynn's unique, tender, clever and perfect theme song coupled with his honest and infectious performance easily rivals anything produced by Dylan."

I think that about covers it!Smile

Yes, very popular in our house too! Love all the actors in it, it’s funny in a gentle way. Perfect to watch just before bed. Love the music too and wherever it’s filmed is beautiful.

martinisforeveryone · 28/02/2023 20:21

@senua what a wonderful review

Very sad times in Mackenzie's family with the recent loss of his sister in law. I was helping spread the news of the appeal when she went missing before I knew she was related to anyone in the public eye. RIP Laurel.

grafittiartist · 28/02/2023 20:36

Loved it from first watch- superb!

senua · 28/02/2023 20:40

I hadn't heard the news about Laurel. It must be very hard for the family. Wishing them strength and love.

WandaWonder · 28/02/2023 20:51

I didn't like the christmas special but have seen the rest many times it is brilliant

ThisIsWednesday · 28/02/2023 20:52

It's wonderful, isn't it? Just a smooth, gentle piece of entertainment that doesn't have loads of drama or over the top comedy. It's just.... happens. And you join them. And it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling.

Until your husband starts pointing out clay pipes and telling you the history of them, or telling you what it means when you find a lead spindle whorl. Or making sure you know that Lance's detector is a worth good £1000 and quite a bit better than an Equinox 800 or whatever he has because it has superior discrimination.

I'm now looking for a DMDC fleece for his birthday..

Littlepaws18 · 28/02/2023 20:53

It's my second fav tv show of all time love it!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/02/2023 20:55

Did anyone else think Sheila had given a baby away? One of the episodes seemed to hint at that, it really made me tear up.

I loved Sheila's character, she was such a sweet, simple soul and the lemonade cracked me up every time 😂

mumyes · 28/02/2023 20:59

Love this show! Mackenzie crook is amazingly talented.

More series please!!

I think Lance has some he could spare.Wink

senua · 28/02/2023 21:01

Did anyone else think Sheila had given a baby away?
I thought infertility or repeated MC.

Tree543 · 28/02/2023 21:04

I thought Shelia said she had a baby adopted. She was talking to Lance about it when they were in a pub garden.

spacechimp79 · 28/02/2023 21:07

I have just watched the whole lot over the last few weeks and loved it. DH had seen them before and been trying to persuade me to watch it for a while. I didn’t think it would be my sort of thing at all. It’s so calming! Really hope they do another series.

CharlieSays13 · 28/02/2023 21:12

Watching through tears right now. We came to it late and loved it. I'd been telling my dad recently to watch it as I knew he would love it too. He promised he would start it and then died suddenly the next day. Breaks my heart that he didn't get to enjoy it....

senua · 28/02/2023 21:19

This is the scene from 6:30. Sorry about the Polish subtitles!

Ragwort · 28/02/2023 21:34

I loved it to, used to live near where it was filmed and have spent many evenings in the (original) hall where they had their meetings ... since been demolished.

I had assumed infertility too. Beautifully nuanced moment.

I adored the various Sheila’s lemonade moments, even when only glimpsed in the background. Garfunkel’s tasting in particular 😄
