Detectorists Appreciation thread

I knew about Detectorists but always assumed it would be a bit too gentle / suited for elderly people for some reason. Since starting it I've fallen in love with it and have binged the whole lot! Just got the recent Xmas special left to view.

What a well written, well cast, lovely warming show. Just what I needed this winter.

Anyone else came across this years later?

Such good writing. The scene where Andy rescues the hedgehog, so clever, genius stuff that dialogue.

RubyDarke · 02/03/2023 19:25

I absolutely love this show.

For me the outstanding moment was the discovery of the whistle to call the bird of prey and the flashback right through to Roman times with the beautiful song by the Unthanks playing as the background music.

Just stunning

Such a wonderful series, will there ever be any more? Praying there are, just such a beautiful programme

Yes, as Lance said, they are time travellers - just wonderful

Someone needs to give Mackenzie Crook everything he needs to write more stuff. The man's a genius.
Who'd have thought it of Gareth from The Office?

PauliesWalnuts · 03/03/2023 06:34

We binged it after I watched the Christmas special for something to do when I was ironing. I’ve loved every minute of it. I thought my boyfriend was going to wet his pants at the lemonade scenes.

And that’s the key to great comedy I think. If I look back to comedies like Last of the Summer Wine, they over-egged the cliches with them popping up every episode, whereas there was only one lemonade incident per series and you never knew when it was going to be.

Yes and no. There is a showbiz saying of "leave them wanting more" for a reason. He should retire this as the perfection that it is and turn his talents to something new.

It is filmed in Framlingham, it’s our local town. It really is as lovely as it looks on tele. The pub isn’t in Fram though, not sure where it is. Was funny in the Christmas special, when they were at the train station. They’d accidentally left one of the station signs up in the background, proudly proclaiming that they were in fact in Saxmundham. 😄

Saw Mackenzie Crook in the pub once. He was chatting to a friend of mine! Sadly didn’t get introduced.

The outside is The Castle in Fram, the inside is The Crown in great glemham 🙂

MsAdoraBelleDearheartVonLipwig · 03/03/2023 09:37

Ah @Rapidash you have solved the mystery for me. I knew the outside, couldn’t place the inside! Thanks. 😊

purpledalmation · 03/03/2023 09:39

And don't forget the title song. It's so beautiful and evocative it makes me well up. Love the detectorists. Simon and Garfunkel 🤣🤣🤣🤣

beguilingeyes · 03/03/2023 11:37

My favourite bit from the recent special was,

"Sheila, you're breaking my heart"
"You're shaking my confidence daily".
So good.

Veryverycalmnow · 03/03/2023 11:43

One of my favourite programmes! I think Mackenzie Crook is great- I love Worzel Gummidge too and it has that same countrysidey, warm feel to it.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 03/03/2023 21:01

I love the invisible dogs, so funny 😂 and then he loses them, doubly hard to find them 🤣

Dodecaheidyin · 04/03/2023 11:41

I watched the Christmas special last night. Have I missed an episode or series that explains about the burnt out cottage?

spacechimp79 · 04/03/2023 11:48

No @Dodecaheidyin you haven't missed anything. I agree that it was a bit confusing that we didn't know how or why it happened.

If you love the music then listen to Johnny Flynn's albums. His first album A Larum is wonderful. He's an incredible musician and well worth seeing live if you get the chance.

I second this recommendation

Dodecaheidyin · 04/03/2023 12:19

Thank you, @spacechimp79.

I've just rewatched the last episode - at least Series 3 episode 6 (still saving the 2022 Xmas special). I loved it even more the second time round. That moment when Terry found a button and waved across to Shiela who is sat in a tree reading his button book- the love in his face - brought a tear to my eye!

It's such a great show I can't believe I didn't watch it at the time it first came out. I'm normally pretty interested in new writing and new shows and always watch stuff, but I'm wondering if this flew under the radar somewhat. Anyway I think it should go down as one of the best.

Also, I haven't seen the 2022 one yet but does anyone know why Mackenzie Crook decided to do it at this particular time given the end of series 3 was meant to be the end? (And it ended so sublimely)?

It started on BBC Four so that may have had something to do with it.
I think the creation of the 2022 special was probably a reaction to the Arts hiatus caused by Covid.

I love that they are currently repeating it on Monday nights. As everyone knows, Monday night is Quiz night.Smile

I thought it was a mistake Andy made that burnt the cottage down. I thought they had some small throwaway comment that said or implied this... 🤔

SoupDragon · 07/03/2023 08:34

I came to it late and binge watched it.

Crumpetdisappointment · 07/03/2023 08:37

yes i never gave it a chance previously
but have been persuaded
love it

Crumpetdisappointment · 07/03/2023 08:43

the lemonade is genius.
all the background grimacing

WeAreOnTheRoadToNowhere · 07/03/2023 08:45

The cottage burnt down in RL didn't it so they had to write that into the script. I read that one of the actors gave the owners a donation so they could rebuild

oldwhyno · 07/03/2023 09:04

it passed me by too, but I’ve just finished binge watching it all. Now found this thread and considering watching series 1 again.

it was so good for the soul. I love Suffolk even more now, and pubs and people and sheds.
