2023’s final trilogy of films will find Endeavour and Thursday entering a new era of change both professionally and personally.

Set in the spring of 1972, the final season’s opening episode is directed by none other than Endeavour star Shaun Evans.

The synopsis for the story reads: “Two unexplained deaths turn up ties to the Oxford Concert Orchestra, while a body discovered in a derelict warehouse stokes fears that ‘London business’ has yet again found its way to Oxford.

“Thursday and Endeavour’s investigation unearths some unsettling connections to cases the duo believed were well and truly behind them.”

I think you would actually be better off watching from the beginning if you can, lots of current stuff is referring to series 2 at the moment. It was good from the start so I think you will enjoy it.

Crumpetdisappointment · 06/03/2023 11:20

thank you also @Sluj

Anyone else think that Thursday knew those bodies were there and tried to stop them being dug up - who tipped off Division to tell Bright to stop it? And when Bright gives Morse the remainder of the day Thursday asks if he's sure....

Hmm yes, and I also began to feel a bit suspicious of Thursday when he and Win were watching that TV show and one of the characters said 'there's nothing lower than a bent copper'. Possibly just a wink to line of duty, I'd be so sad if Thursday turned out to be corrupt! Although it would explain why he doesn't feature in Morse...

Can't remember where the new post/promotion was that Bright wants to put Thursday forward for, but maybe he takes that and moves away. Provides a reason for him not being in Morse?

Carshall Newtown. I've just watched the pilot episode and it's where Morse was working at the beginning.

HilaryThorpe · 06/03/2023 14:47

I think the Thursdays will all go off for a new life in Australia or similar and to protect them Morse and Strange will agree never to mention their names again. 😊

KrasiTime · 06/03/2023 15:55

As I’ve said before I’ll cry be ugly tears if Thursday is bent. I’ll not be happy. At All.

I love Thursday & I don’t want him to be bent but Morse & Strange don’t mention him in the Morse series so who knows 🤷🏻‍♀️

IwantToRetire · 06/03/2023 15:59

Its funny but since re-watching Endeavour prior to the start of this season (and sorry if this is a repeat comment for some) when I realised that althought the plots were quite complicated I got caught up in the visual representation / recreation of the era, but also the rather "knowing" nods to the fact that this series only exists because of Morse.

So the whole story within a story of the tv police series being used to make points not just about the Endeavour police characters but about actors!

Sometimes it is a bit too clever by half ...

But also I am hopeless at recognising characters. On a thread about another series I said I dont need a recap at the start of each episode, I need a little bio about each character. Those of you who can not only recognise the characters and their back stories must get so much more out of it.

But I am getting really fed up with the Joan story line. Given that Morse is being so prim about her, and based on previous episodes, he would have written a well thought out note of apology and asked if they could still meet. Also of course we know from the Morse series that she is never referred to.

I dont think Thursday would have told the other police force / division. But he is very clear that given the impact of being shot on him and his family, and all their current troubles, he just wants to move on to a quiet and of service. But I am really sad we haven't had more of Win. For instance last week, she was all for staying. Why has she changed her mind. Couldn't they have had a scene between the two of them talking it over. So much of her life is being let down by her family.

Also, I dont think that Thursday would ever be bent, although we know from earlier episodes that he wasn't above use of (illegal) to get a result. And that's where he and Bright bond. And why even though for both of them they agree to share the responsibility for Morse restarting the investigation into the children's home.

By the way, given the vast area, however did they decide where to dig. Its not like they had sonar or whatever it is called.

Going back to Thursday its funny that he has never commented on the Freemasons, and their influence, or that his future son in law using that to get ahead. But maybe that's why he has a soft spot for Endeavour. As he doesn't make any effort to be part of any networks.

But I am much more detached watching this series.

I think Morse used the clues on the book covers to find the spot to dig, he likes a crossword clue.

diddl · 06/03/2023 20:12

Bloody hell those traffic cops were annoying!

I must have imagined this as I thought that they threatened Morse after a body was found!

Is does all seem to be foreshadowing the end of Fred doesn't it?

Oh yes, that makes sense. He did keep going back to the covers. And then trying to match them to the maps?

Bloody hell those traffic cops were annoying!

The weren't traffic cops, and they weren't annoying. They were the heavy squad from Division giving him a warning not to keep investigation, and reminding him what happened last time he did.

The girl was Susan. They met up again in the episode Dead on Time. She had married their tutor Henry Fallon

Susan was mentioned in Endeavour when he met her mother at a hospital when Susan's father was a patient and her mother was very snooty to Morse, unless I imagined it.

No you didn't .

Iirc Susan's mother was played by Phoebe Nicholls who was Cordelia in Brideshead Revisited.

Also in the pilot Morse is talking to a professor(?) who refers to Susan.

Calls her a different name & Morse says something like "she preferred Susan".

Think that that was a reference to her not being Susan in the books.

Yes I know as Morse recognised one.

For me they weren't portrayed well.

Caricature like.

Wasn’t she Wendy in the books? 🤔

diddl · 07/03/2023 09:50

Wasn’t she Wendy in the books? 🤔

I think you're right.

Going to sound a bit of a snob here but it always struck me as such an ordinary name.

How can someone who named their daughter Wendy look down on Morse?

Tidsleytiddy · 07/03/2023 09:54

It was probably because they were kind of very minor aristocracy and Morse was “just” a policeman. I don’t think the family would have encouraged the engagement between them and most likely thought for her to marry an Oxford tutor (which she did) was more in keeping with her upbringing. Wasn’t her brother called William? Was seen riding a ridiculous indoor mechanical horse?

Tidsleytiddy · 07/03/2023 09:58

William Bryce-Morgan

diddl · 07/03/2023 10:00

Think it was William yes.

That's certainly the episode.

David Haig as their son in law, Adrian Dunbar as their doctor & Samantha Bond as his wife.

Tidsleytiddy · 07/03/2023 10:06

Yes that’s it and Susan’s daughter and grandchild were killed in a car accident. I always think (when I watch it) that Susan never got her happy ending and was wrong to have dumped Morse. Her life would have been so different

Knitterofcrap · 08/03/2023 10:21

Yes I am hoping for a series that connects the 15 (?) years between end of Endeavour and start of Morse.

What would they call it though?

amberedover · 08/03/2023 10:45

Ooh ,excellent idea @Knitterofcrap .Can someone pass it on to whoever commissions Endeavour.

That would be great. I will never watch Lewis, though, because it has that arse Laurence Fox in it.
