Has anyone else been watching today? I've watched 4 episodes so far. Dated, but loving it

Anyone still watching?

I am really enjoying it. I love the 'old' factor about it, it's fascinating to see and I can relate to old times so well. It's interesting from various POV and I love Sue Johnson she is outstanding in this.

bigTillyMint · 25/03/2023 15:34

I’m still watching too!

Did anyone spot the name plaque on Karen’s door? Everyone had one back in the day 🤣

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 25/03/2023 18:46

@bigTillyMint yes! I spotted that ‘toilet and bathroom’! In the same style as the name plates you used to be able to get. I thought labelling each room was the height of sophistication! My parents thought otherwise.

x2boys · 25/03/2023 20:51

Im.weeks behind my son was in hospital.for a few weeks so.I haven't caught up
a question when I go onto.STV it shows how many episodes have been dropped but will.only allow me to.see the write up.for upto.episode 30 is This because I haven't caught up?

VanillaImpulse · 25/03/2023 21:12

Yep still watching, I'm loving the nostalgia. Unfortunately I was reading the digital spy forum on it and read some spoilers unintentionally Hmm
It's so good how it's just like real life and not loads of stupid murders and explosions going on.

@VanillaImpulse - this, totally!

I thought that! I was v jealous because you could never get one with my name on it.

Snozzlemaid · 26/03/2023 12:25

Dp still has his bedroom door name plaque propped up on show, on a shelf in the garage.

CaptainBatEars · 28/03/2023 13:48

same here, NCTDN. I could never get a door nameplate either <cries> I've caught up now to ep50, and also noticed that the Grants have a box of old photos instead of everything in albums. Again, that's exactly the same as at my DPs. Just one massive box that you have to root through.

x2boys there's a drop-down box on the episode list so if you click on it, you should get the write-ups for episodes 31-50 separately. It's not immediately obvious but that's how I found the later ones.

VanillaImpulse · 30/03/2023 00:50

I try not to read the description on episodes coming up as that's how I found out about Gavin - really spoilt it.

What I find funny is all the teenagers offering each other cups of tea and them sat around drinking it. I can't imagine any teenagers drinking tea these days (unless it's bubble tea!).

bigTillyMint · 16/04/2023 17:54

That hotel they’re staying in for the TT - were they really that bad in the 80s? 🤣

torquewench · 16/04/2023 19:28

Yes, they were terrible. The Villiers was demolished not long after this was filmed.

The gift shop on the corner is now Pizza Hut.

Enjoyed the racing references (I remember Joey Dunlop holding the petrol tank on with his knees)

Amazing that in 83 you could decide to go to the TT and get a ticket for the boat the following day (Lady of Man, I went to the TT on her a few times). Nowadays you need to book a year in advance for TT fortnight.

Mylchreests (the hire car company) is still going.

bigTillyMint · 16/04/2023 20:38

@torquewench, you’re an expert!
i only ever went to the IOM twice, but my grandad used to go twice a week when my grandma died, with his best friend. And he actually rode in the TT in the 1920s!

NCTDN · 16/04/2023 21:27

So funny to hear them mention taking their bank book on holiday with themGrin

Haha! I think most people that go to the TT are very similar to Alan's character with their enthusiasm and knowledge of the event's history (in fact watching him reminded me of a LOT of people I know that go there).

There is a database of racers from 1907 onwards, if you don't know what bike he rode, it could be listed on here:

I'm just to episode 56 - Annabelle's birthday. Not sure if I've missed but I presume it's a special one! Is she meant to be 60 do you reckon?

I didn't see what birthday she's meant to be celebrating but I can't believe the characters of her and Paul are meant to be in their 50's!

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 17/04/2023 18:50

@Cheshiresun i watched that episode and don’t remember it being a key birthday… they both, especially him, look ancient though! It’s such a time capsule brookside; I’d forgotten all the training schemes of the 80s. Paul’s one is going to show him how to look younger apparently!

bigTillyMint · 17/04/2023 20:17

Thanks @torquewench - I’ll have a look!

@Cheshiresun, wasn’t Paul meant to be 55 or something at the start. So can’t be 60 yet, though they look well over 60 🤣

Cheshiresun · 18/04/2023 00:37

Well we see the actors real dates of birth - 'Paul' being born in early 1922 and 'Annabelle' early 1934, so where recent reruns are being shown now, originally broadcast Spring 1983. So actors Jim (Paul) IRL was 61 and Annabelle (Doreen) 49 then. And they are both portraying characters in their mid 50's. (TBH I first typed Doreen would have been 59, then realised not!)

Also their children are meant to be 17 and 15 say, portrayed by actors in their 20's IRL with Lucy (Karin) born 1961 so making her 21/22. I'm not sure about Gordon (Nigel).

Maybe it was more believable back then, people looked older! Hairstyles and fashions certainly not helping! I would have put Paul mid 60's and Annabelle late 50's. Quite old fashioned in behaviour too, but they are the snobs of the close. It's fascinating watching this as I was only a babe back then! I am finding their storylines a bit mundane so far, maybe that will change! I think it will what I've looked into so far.

Rest in Peace Doreen, Jim and Karin anyhow.

VanillaImpulse · 19/04/2023 09:58

Getting annoyed with the episode descriptions as it totally gives away what is going to happen. I knew about what was going to happen on the boat with Petra when i happened to glance at it while scrolling Angry

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 19/04/2023 14:17

Talking of Petra, wasn’t she 5 months pregnant? It was treated like she was just a few weeks gone… any miscarriage is miserable but 5 months is getting pretty late… My Mum says late 60’s, 70’s women who miscarried or had a still birth were treated dreadfully - maybe it is realistic!

Yes she had quite a big bump, it would be classed as a stillbirth now from 24 weeks - not sure if it was different then.

NCTDN · 20/04/2023 11:48

Why on Earth would Heather and roger be together?

CaptainBatEars · 26/04/2023 17:34

I'm finding it difficult to believe there's one woman interested in Roger, let alone a second one chasing him frantically. He's such an arse. And it's all a bit weird that Jonah is trying to go out with the 16 year old Lucy. I know the Lucy actress was in her early 20s so looks more his age, but nevertheless, hmmm.

I did love all the hats being worn by Karen & her mates in episode 72. That was such a look back then!

NCTDN · 26/04/2023 19:32

Looking at Karen makes me think of bananarama!
