Has anyone else been watching today? I've watched 4 episodes so far. Dated, but loving it

I'm loving it, it's great to have on in the background, and it's so nostalgic! That women that plays Alan Partridge's girlfriend is the worst actress I've ever seen in my life 😂

Snozzlemaid · 30/04/2023 10:10

Roger really is such an insufferable arse.
How the hell does she put up with him.

I agree. I started to warm to him a bit when he was so kind to Petra but now he is definitely proving himself to be an arse!!

So it’s July (Wimbledon). Lucy just sat her last o level (or should have done) but Karen has her CSE results? How does that work? I was first year gcse (1988) and remember cse’s coming out with o levels when my sis did a mix?

NCTDN · 30/04/2023 20:25

I thought that too.

I don't know but I thought the highest grades of CSE,were equivalent to.a grade C olevel?
My sister was also the first cohort to sit GCSe,s in 1988 and I did mine in 1990 so I'm not entirely sure🤔

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 30/04/2023 21:43

@x2boys yes, a grade 1 cse was an o level equivalent. It’s the timing I’m confused about; I thought cse results came out the same time as o level results in august, not earlier in july. I’m off to have a Google!

VanillaImpulse · 01/05/2023 10:19

Also Wimbledon is usually on in June isn't it, unless it was different then?

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 01/05/2023 13:30

@VanillaImpulse (like your name!) Wimbledon start July 3rd this year. I’m not a fan so I don’t know whether this is typical or changed between the 80’s and now.

CaptainBatEars · 01/05/2023 13:45

Wimbledon has always been the same from what I remember, starting the first week in July and going for 2 weeks so the finals are usually the 2nd weekend in July. Re CSE results timings, from what Google says, a lot of CSE marking was localised and done by teachers/local boards, and involved more coursework than O levels, so it's possible the timings were variable. I've a vague recollection of my cousin having her Maths CSE result earlier than her O level (she did both) which would have been the same year as Karen's results.

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 01/05/2023 15:12

@CaptainBatEars yes, I saw that there was what was described as ‘option 3’ where the schools created the curriculum and the exam and marked it?! I too wondered if that was why the results were ready early ( though surely they needed moderating?!). I do like the ‘time capsule’ aspect to Brookie!

CaptainBatEars · 01/05/2023 16:33

Fascinating, wasn't it? I think we read the same link 😄I suppose also, when you think about it, if CSEs were aimed at those expected to be leaving school at 16 and then going straight into work, you'd want those results out as soon as you could get them so that the employers could see what qualifications applicants had, as opposed to making them wait 2 months until August. If you're going on to college or 6th form as was the assumption for those doing O levels, there's less pressure to know earlier, presumably. It's the time capsule bit I'm finding fascinating too. For example it's so hot in the latest episodes and yet all the women have got court shoes on as opposed to sandals!

NCTDN · 01/05/2023 16:49

Yes I'm looking at the shoes thinking how uncomfortable they look!
I didn't realise that fashion had changed so much.

Snozzlemaid · 01/05/2023 16:59

Yes! The shoes.
When Petra and Barry went to the Isle of Man she was walking around in stilettos the whole time.
Not a comfortable trainer in sight.

bigTillyMint · 01/05/2023 17:46

We didn’t wear trainers in the 80s! I hate court shoes - I’m sure it’s from squeezing my sweaty feet into them in the summer!

ComeOnThenFanny · 02/05/2023 18:18

Born in 1970, and growing up with those fashions, I'm pretty sure my manky feet are misshapen from squeezing them into pointy stilettos for so many years! I would never do it now, you're lucky to see my feet out of crocs these days 🤣

Amanda Burton in a bikini then Roger goes off to a very public garden centre to see his fancy woman! Loved seeing scenes of old Liverpool as well with Lucy and her dad outside the Everyman theatre.

I wish they'd upload more than 5 episodes a week!!

x2boys · 05/05/2023 14:40

I ! Months behind my son was really unwell in hospital( now thankfully recovering) so in missed weeks of it and couldn't get back into it ,I'm just up to Gavin dying😮
Are the next few months worth watching or should I just start where everyone else is up to ,!
I have to admit it's very dull at the moment, although I know it gets better as I used ti.watch with my Dad on Saturday's afternoon,s.

Ooh Roger is such a cad!
I missed the first couple of years of Brookie when I was growing up, so I've never seen these ones before - Heather was with someone else when I started, maybe Nicholas someone? I remember Petra in Letter to Brezhnev though, it was one of my favourite films.

Glad your son is feeling better x I would stick with it in order, it's worth it.

VanillaImpulse · 05/05/2023 16:33

Yes it's worth watching even just for the nostalgia. I think the only episode I could've done with skipping was all the blokes in the pub talking about strikes for the whole episode. It was cleverly written though. It's so much better than soaps are today trying to cram as many storylines in as possible.

I just watched the latest episode with Petra in the supermarket. She is so annoying but you can't help but feel for her (and how crap was the checkout lady!!)

NCTDN · 11/05/2023 17:10

Omg the fitness leotard!

bigTillyMint · 11/05/2023 18:07

@NCTDN, Sam looked great, but Alan 😳🤣

FEEL THE BURN!

I'd forgotten that the actress that played Marie was the wife in the couple that sort of adopted Shirley in Shirley Valentine 😁

Her character Marie was moaning about being told cigarettes give you cancer and then 20 years later in real life she did actually die of lung cancer
