Has anyone else been watching today? I've watched 4 episodes so far. Dated, but loving it

By some weird coincidence I found them the very day STV started showing from episode 1.
My husband HATES hearing the Brookside theme tune and can't understand why I'm loving the show, but it reminds me of my Nanna - it's still on the parts before I ever watched it and I often wonder what my Nanna thought of some of the characters and storylines and my aunty's cousin was also a cast member, playing Ray (in the later episodes) - Kenneth Cope.
One of my lovely neighbours and friends, Alan Rothwell also starred in it.

Love it and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside - reminds me of my Nanna so much, that I always have a cup of tea in her old smoked glass cup.

So it is. It's a shame that Rightmove don't even show sold prices for those houses.

I read that they were all sold to one developer, a brookside fan.

He rents them all out.

Yes, that is what I read too. I think they needed a lot of renovation post filming.

I live NW and was an early teen when it started. Kids at school were obsessed but I didn’t watch until the Beth Jordach years. I’m the same as you, it’s the nostalgia and the easily forgotten details of the time that are bitter sweet and take me back. Tiny things like the style of ‘flight bags’ taken to Spain by Bobby and Sheila. The sticker on the fridge in the bakery Sheila worked in advertising cream cakes. The travel brochures perused for the holiday to Rome. The hopelessness of growing up in an area of industries shutting down. Job training schemes exploiting young people. The patriarchal society. It wasn’t all good but it does take me back in a similar way to you!

NCTDN · 29/10/2024 22:46

I'm watching it all to reminisce. I'm In St Helens and there's a few mentions to there which I never noticed when I was younger.

i have relatives in St Helens and visited every weekend for years. Hadn’t been back for a decade but went a couple of days ago. Found it hard to orientate myself. I too enjoyed the references to St Helens and the location work in the early episodes.

I feel like I've missed an episode - catching up on the last couple of weeks. Sheila and Bobby were in Rome admitting their marriage was in bits, then the next thing they're all lovey dovey?!

Did you not see the episode where they went to see the Pope?
O think that's the one where they reaffirmed their love
Sheila,s a devout Catholic, I think that was main reason to go to Rome to see the pope.

NCTDN · 01/11/2024 09:21

Oh no i missed that !

NCTDN · 01/11/2024 16:52

I've only just noticed that the corkhills now have a drive up to their garage!

x2boys · 14/11/2024 21:49

I thought the acting between Billy and Doreen was outstanding this, week it just goes to show major shocking storyline, s are just not needed im fully involved with their mortgage and debt problems
Also Damon and his realisation his " job" isn't really a job it's just another kick in teeth for him.

And now it's gone again!

I’ve noticed that on Google maps the collinses house seems to now have brown mock Tudor wood on the front as does the house next door. Odd.

Paul2023 · 21/11/2024 20:43

On the first episodes, you can see other houses being built just outside Brookside Close. You can see the scaffolding and Damon and his mates hanging around one of the houses.Does anyone know if these houses were just normal houses that people live in? I’d presume it’s a real housing estate

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 22/11/2024 00:20

@Paul2023 yes, you can see the close on Google maps and the houses and indeed the fence, are there. They are all real.

I would think so because channel four commissioned the houses specifically for the soap so it must be part of an estate

Pat is 28? He looks at least 33!
I wonder how old Terry is meant to be?

He's Barry's best friend so late 20,s?
The clothes and the tache don't help tbh.

bigTillyMint · 27/11/2024 19:51

Just googled actor who played Pat, and he was born in 59, so 28 was fairly accurate? Must be the hair and stuff that makes him look older to me!
Actor who played Terry was born 57, so a couple of years older.

Everyone seemed to look older in the 1980's. Also, David Easter who played Pat was married to Denise Welch at the time. He looks amazing for his age now. The actor who played Terry hasn't fared so well, unfortunately.

I'm still loving catching up with this groundbreaking programme, and the memories it evokes (although some of the sexist and racist attitudes are truly awful)

I agree but that's what makes it realistic imo
And Anabelle and Paul coming ti terms with Gordon's sexuality ,times have changed so much, my nephew came out a couple of years ago my sister his mum half suspected anyway and is very supportive, and my elderly parents have really mellowed in their attitude
Annabel and Paul seem so awkward in comparison
Thankfully we live in more enlightened times .

DoreenCorkhill · 28/11/2024 19:12

This is my absolute guilty pleasure.
Such nostalgia -the cars the fashion and even the small details like Laura carrying the old style M&S carrier in a recent episode .
Laura and Jonathan's wallpaper borders and black ash furniture .
The habitat kitchen rack in Terry's kitchen -had the very same one in my student flat .
The Miss Selfridge lip print bathrobe that Sandra used to wear.
It's like peaking into my teen years .
Can't get over how young 'Sheila' and 'Annabel' were possibly mid /late 40s at the time I can remember thinking they were positively ancient .
Still find Harry and Ralph incredibly boring though some things don't change.
Julia Brogan though ....what a queen .

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 29/11/2024 22:56

Amused to see Shelley King (Yasmeen in Corry) as Mrs Patel in episode 495. Recognised her voice first!

also think they had a continuity error as she was upset about having to take the children back to India where they had never lived but I thought Laura said they were Pakastani?

Snozzlemaid · 13/12/2024 21:21

Just seen that Damon & Debbie will be shown on STV from 1st January.
I've never seen this before as I didn't watch Brookside then, so really looking forward to it.
