Has anyone else been watching today? I've watched 4 episodes so far. Dated, but loving it

I loved Damon when I watched it the first time round. Seems surreal to watch it again knowing that he's the same age as my son, but their worlds are so different

I’m surprised this time around by how much I’m disliking Bobby Grant. I’m a big fan of Sue Johnston / Ricky Tomlinson in The Royle Family and have always thought of Jim Royle as a lazy, less supportive, more selfish and more sexist version of Bobby Grant. Watching Brookside back I’d take Jim Royle over Bobby any day of the week. I’m shouting at the tv every time he talks angrily about Shelias rape along the lines of “it happened to meeee too”, along with the view that he’s babysitting for Shelia when he has his own daughter. I miss Karen as a supporter of Shelia. The irony of Bobby being a principled union man there for his members (men) but not for his wife is interesting. I’m rating Simon O’Brien’s acting as Damon in these scenes.

Yes he very much views himself as a victim and as though Sheila should have got over it now
I don't suppose there would have Been much councilling for rape victims ?
Damon,s acting is great but I'm sad as I know what's coming

Do you think stv will show the spin off series? Don't want to say much in case there's people on here who don't know what I'm on about.

I hope so it's the main part of the story line.

Its interesting to see how Rome has changed. It's so much more pedestrianised now. I had to look up where that first scene was when they were on an island with an obelisk surrounded by traffic everywhere! It's nothing like that nowadays, much more peaceful and pedestrian friendly.

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 22/10/2024 14:12

@VanillaImpulse yes I love the amount of on location filming included. The details being back so many memories.

Yes this, I'm actually wanting to punch Bobby grant in the face! I'm actually shocked watching these episodes from the 80s, Baby sitting his own child fgs! Women were just expected to wait on and serve everybody else, all the cooking, cleaning etc always done by the women in all these households. but suppose thats how society was in the 80s thinking back my own mum did everything, dad just went to work and the pub. Paul collins has also annoyed me at times to with his sexist attitudes. So glad things have changed for the better for women.

Yes I was thinking that they must have had decent budget for filming on location
But the set is pretty small compared to other soaps, it's literally just the close ( I know that changes when they build the ""parade")

Bingowingo · 25/10/2024 13:20

And how small is the bed Shelia and Bobby sleep in! I’m thinking maybe they filmed in an actual bedroom (rather than studio set) and needed a smaller bed to fit the cameras and crew in.

Yeah it's tiny ,i mean Bobby's not exactly slim it must be very uncomfortable! I have a king size ,I bet theirs is a small double?

All the interior shots were actually filmed in the houses (and the houses are tiny), most of the bedrooms had built in wardrobes that connected through to the next bedroom so that the camera operators had more room to film. The cupboard at the top of the stairs in the Corkhill's house was removable so that they could have a camera there to film the smallest bedroom.

I always found it fascinating, that they used real houses and they bought the entire close, i know not all the houses were used as residential, some were used as storage and canteens etc.

MadisonAvenue · 27/10/2024 10:09

Someone asked on a Brookside Facebook page yesterday if anyone has any interior shots of the houses since the show finished, ie estate agent pics. It was said that the whole close was sold as one in an auction and Dean Sullivan (Jimmy) tried to buy it but was outbid.
No pictures appeared but it was said that the wall had been rebuilt in the Corkill’s living room giving it a separate kitchen again. Pretty sure I read a while ago that the reason for the arch being built when Petra lived there was to make more space for filming.

Bingowingo · 28/10/2024 14:17

I am that saddo that’s looked on rightmove at sold houses on Brookside! It looks like some are not on the close (Brookside being a much longer road before curving round into the close). One or two looked like they were on the close and had internal photos.

MadisonAvenue · 28/10/2024 15:05

@Bingowingo I think there’s a flat currently for sale, or it was recently 😂

Edit - found it https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/153889928#/?channel=RES_BUY

MadisonAvenue · 28/10/2024 16:10

That looks like it’s next door to Bobby and Sheila’s? 😂

We could never work out who lived there - was that a catering/storage house?

I did the same !

NCTDN · 28/10/2024 16:34

I think that the street was still known as Brookside close though but can't find any of them on a search.

This isn't the right shape road

It’s just the top curved bit that’s the tv Brookside Close. In reality Brookside is the longer road shown on the map, just numbers 49-63 on google maps are what we know as Brookside Close.

NCTDN · 28/10/2024 19:01

So it is. It's a shame that Rightmove don't even show sold prices for those houses.
