I've got two weeks worth to catch up on!

Snozzlemaid · 13/03/2024 22:47

Lucy's back with a new head!

Baby Claire is very cute, shouting over Sheila and Heather 😂

Tilllly · 14/03/2024 04:12

Now I have 3 weeks to catch up on

NCTDN · 14/03/2024 09:20

Haha I was just about to say it's a different Lucy. She looks a lot older for being away for a year!

What I love about old brookside is how they take their time over storylines and don't rush it. Nowadays Edna would have died from the stroke straightaway and you might get a few mins dedicated to the funeral.

Yep. That story was really well done. Edna's final 'breaths' in hospital were far more realistic than anything you'd see on TV now.

Tilllly · 16/03/2024 19:24

Oh Julia!!! I'd forgotten her

I don't remember, Billy Corkhill been married to that woman I can't remember who I thought he was married to

NCTDN · 16/03/2024 22:53

Doesn't he end up with Sheila later on ?

Tilllly · 17/03/2024 08:54

I can't remember!

Yes

Cheshiresun · 20/03/2024 11:05

Lucy! I had to laugh, nothing like the old one, mannerisms or nothing!!

Heather's answerphone! The size of it. I've never seen one like that, maybe it had a VHS tape recorder in it or something! I remember the ones with the tiny cassettes in.

The Corkhills and Julia "fiddling the lecky!" OMG, different world. I hope people still don't do that!

The same bunny shows on TV and sameish music, radio, news etc. They mustn't have bought any rights to use proper music/shows so have to reuse their same couple of content that's been specially made!

VanillaImpulse · 24/03/2024 14:01

I really thought that Karen's new posh uni friend was a young Katie Hopkins to start with! Same mannerisms and nose!

VanillaImpulse · 26/03/2024 15:06

The scene at Heather's with the baby, you can tell they had to ad lib that when she started crying and then the scene was abruptly ended! 🤣

Paul2023 · 29/03/2024 10:12

Too young to remember the 80s episodes , well maybe the late 80s. But remember the 90s ones well.
I remember watching the early ones from the first episode on UK living in the mid 90s.

I did remember Terrys green lorry though so I must have remembered some of it from the 80s ! Random memory

Paul2023 · 29/03/2024 10:14

Good to see Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnstone still going too.

Ricky, Sue and a trip or two was good fun! If you have some time, Sue’s autobiography is a good read.

Your post has just reminded me of Rita, Sue and Bob too, which was a bloody awful and inappropriate film, even at the time.

NCTDN · 10/05/2024 08:33

Aww here comes Jimmy.

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 10/05/2024 12:20

anyone else shocked at the teacher-pupil relationship? Was it my imagination or did Doreen try to justify it to her husband saying her daughter was a woman now making choices for herself?! Eugh! Under age sex + older man + teacher?!

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 10/05/2024 22:12

Watching episode 346 where apparently it is ‘all Tracy’s doing’ and she seduced the teacher?! Age 14 as was I in 1986. When Billy finds out he acts like he got the wrong end of the stick and apologises to the School Head. And the resolution to this is that she and her brother should leave the school. I feel like a dinosaur - so much for consent - but I’m pretty sure my parents wouldn’t have bought that nonsense.

and Lucy - she may have had a head change but she is still as crazy and unreasonable as when she first arrived with her other head on.

JustMoved123 · 11/05/2024 04:05

Well said @Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda i couldn’t believe it either! Regardless of her coming to his room, he needed to alert other teachers and reprimand her there. Changing schools too when the school let them down!

Bingowingo · 30/06/2024 08:01

Watching the run up to Shelia’s story. Would have been 15 or 16 at the time these episodes were on TV. How amazing is Sue Johnson as an actress? And how credible is it, sadly, that a character who gives so much to others, as wife, mother, friend, is in such a vulnerable position due to toxic masculinity of multiple men - the wife abuser, Matty, the tutor who abuses his position to get sex. Brookside was way ahead of other programmes of the time in terms of Shelia’s story. Especially in the way they use Karen’s character as someone to challenge traditional women’s roles.

Also loving the new grown up Damien. I haven’t been able to see why 16 year old me loved him, but now he’s come back from London with new maturity I see it! Will the Debbie and Damien spin off episode be released?

NCTDN · 30/06/2024 10:37

Oh I really hope they show Damon and Debbie!

Makingupfactstosuitmyagenda · 30/06/2024 15:08

@Bingowingo its alarming how recent this seems and yet how attitudes (well in my circle!) have changed. Abused woman and kids - don’t interfere. Jealous boyfriend pushing GF around and assaulting her - no condemnation in the narrative. Not just toxic masculinity but toxic society too.

VanillaImpulse · 02/07/2024 13:15

Bobby Grant just comes across really horrible in this at the moment, I don't understand why he was such a much loved character!

NCTDN · 04/07/2024 10:46

I was 14 when this storyline was out. I don't remember it but wonder if my mum wouldn't let me watch it.
It's done really well and unlike programmes nowadays, leaves things to the imagination.
