Anything like Happy Valley?

Jomummy1013 · 17/01/2023 09:57

Hi, I am in middle of Happy Valley, currently binge watching season 2, due to reading recommendations on here. I love it! It is harrowing and heartbreaking and Sarah Lancashire is superb.
However, the actress playing the teaching the teaching assistant Frances - moaning Myrtle - her voice is sooooo annoying, and somewhat spoiling it a little for me, lol. The whispering!!! But it's a great TV series with great acting.
I've watched and enjoyed Line of Duty, The Missing and Baptiste (with a weird crush on Baptise!!). Watched the recent one on 4OD with Vicky McClure in which was good and also the Devil's Hour with Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi which I liked but I no longer have Amazon Prime so can't watch anything on there anymore.
I also watched one on channel 5 with the same actress as Frances - Girl Across The Street which was ok. I love psychological and crime series.
Watched the Rig on Prime but couldn't finish as was shit!
I know there have been other threads on here of a similar nature but wanted to find out if there is anything else around atm which I may enjoy??

Unforgiven also by Sally Wainwright is on Britbox/ITVX and is well worth a watch.

Jomummy1013 · 17/01/2023 10:38

@CrossPurposes that will be added on my list. I think I will have finished Happy Valley by end of tomorrow as I am off work until Monday! X

The Fall
Luther
Both very good but disturbing. If you like crime drama and aren't easily scared you will enjoy them.

stressbucket1 · 17/01/2023 10:41

Both on bbc iplayer

JanuaryBlues2023 · 17/01/2023 10:43

Agree with your comments. Not quite the same but I quite liked No Offence.

Choconut · 17/01/2023 10:51

Agree with The Fall with Gillian Anderson on Netflix it's brilliant, even better than Happy Valley IMO. Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story also on Netflix is also excellent. I've watched The Missing and thought that was very good too.

Shekissedagirlandshelikedit · 17/01/2023 20:54

I agree with Unforgotten. It's one of my favourite TV shows ever, along with Breaking Bad.

Broadchurch is also brilliant if you havent seen it.

NannyR · 17/01/2023 21:03

Last tango in Halifax is another Sally Wainwright drama with Sarah Lancashire. No crime or police, but some gentle humour and interesting family relationships and lots of West Yorkshire scenery. There are quite a few series on iplayer to work your way through.

Jomummy1013 · 17/01/2023 22:00

@stressbucket1 I have seen both of those, forgot to add to my list on my original post. And yes I agree, very very good. The Fall is harrowing x

I've seen Dahmer on Netflix. Some of the girls at work have seen it and told me it's really good - will add to my watch list! X

Ooh this one sounds good then, as same writer and same actress. Will look at this one too! X

Inside Man with David tenant is quite good. I don’t normally like DT in stuff but he’s good in that and it’s got Stanley Tucci in it (not sure if I’ve spelt that right) who’s brilliant. Think it’s on iPlayer.

I am in a similar boat looking for things like Happy Valley. Seen most of the suggestions here. I also love - although different genre - Handmaids Tale as it’s so dark and feminist. Which is kind of why I like Happy valley.

Quite enjoyed Cheat and Safe on Netflix as well.

JaneJeffer · 17/01/2023 22:27

Have you seen Deadwater Fell?

PriamFarrl · 17/01/2023 22:29

I’m currently watching Slow Horses on Apple TV. It’s spies rather than police but I’m loving it, and I don’t like spy stuff normally.

Meltinthemiddle · 18/01/2023 08:06

I have never seen it but is Sherwood like Happy Valley?

Breaking Bad is sublime and has and a brilliant spin off called Better Call Saul. If you enjoy a series with characters that grow and develop over a long period of time, BB is for you.

Beware, it's quite violent and I think I watched 50% of it through my fingers with dh telling me what was happening.
However, I absolutely loved it 😅

Anxiousgirl5 · 18/01/2023 10:52

Unforgotten is fantastic. One of my absolute favourites.

Also recommend:
Liar (netflix)
Angela Black (all 4)
Inside Man (iPlayer)
The Capture (iPlayer)
Sherwood (iPlayer)
The Fall (netflix)
Behind her eyes (netflix)
Pieces of her (netflix)
Safe (netflix)
The Stranger (netflix)

Also yes to Breaking Bad! One of the best TV shows ever made in my opinion. It's incredible. As is the spin off, Better Call Saul.

Iamthewombat · 18/01/2023 10:56

You need Scott and Bailey in your life, same writer, female-led police drama set in the north of England.

Parsley1234 · 18/01/2023 10:59

Save me is absolutely fantastic it was never popular and how it wasn’t on mainstream I have no idea why Lenny James writes and direct and stars

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 18/01/2023 11:08

As others said,

Scott & Bailey
Luther
Unforgotten

Before we die is good.
Marcella.
