Anything like Happy Valley?

Jomummy1013 · 17/01/2023 09:57

Hi, I am in middle of Happy Valley, currently binge watching season 2, due to reading recommendations on here. I love it! It is harrowing and heartbreaking and Sarah Lancashire is superb.
However, the actress playing the teaching the teaching assistant Frances - moaning Myrtle - her voice is sooooo annoying, and somewhat spoiling it a little for me, lol. The whispering!!! But it's a great TV series with great acting.
I've watched and enjoyed Line of Duty, The Missing and Baptiste (with a weird crush on Baptise!!). Watched the recent one on 4OD with Vicky McClure in which was good and also the Devil's Hour with Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi which I liked but I no longer have Amazon Prime so can't watch anything on there anymore.
I also watched one on channel 5 with the same actress as Frances - Girl Across The Street which was ok. I love psychological and crime series.
Watched the Rig on Prime but couldn't finish as was shit!
I know there have been other threads on here of a similar nature but wanted to find out if there is anything else around atm which I may enjoy??

If you have Sky Atlantic, Mare of Easttown with Kate Winslet is brilliant.

Netflix - absolute loved Ozark which builds so well over 5 series. Not one dull episode. Also Series 1 of Dirty John was really good and based on a true story. Just finished Harlan Coben's The Stranger which was enjoyable.

Have you seen Deadwater Fell?

That's really good

Ooooo yes, Mare is fantastic! Also has Evan Peters in it who played Dahmer in the recent Netflix series. So good.

@Xrays wow I didn't realise he played Zabel! He looks so different.

Scott and Bailey
Vigil

AnnPerkins · 18/01/2023 12:05

Loving these recommendations. I will be giving Scott and Bailey a try. I am currently watching State of Play on UK TV Play. It's a political thriller, made in 2003 and most of the cast are now really successful; John Simm, Bill Nighy, Kelly Macdonald, James McAvoy, David Morrissey, Philip Glenister, Amelia Bullmore, Marc Warren. And a very small bit part for a young Tom Burke. It's like an ensemble piece now.

Same with the old Prime Suspects, many of the smaller characters are now stars in their own right.

Also loved no offence and rizzoli and isles

I'm watching At Home with the Braithwaites. Loved it the first time and enjoying it even more as an adult!

Christ, just worked out I was 14 when it first came out

Agree with:
State of Play
No Offence
Unforgotten
Mare of Easttown
Sherwood

Didn't realise Sally Wainwright also wrote Unforgiven and Scott & Bailey! I'm currently working through her Last Tango in Halifax which is lovely but quite different from the gritty/crime drama brief.

My love of most things written by Sally Wainwright began with that. I wish she still worked with Sarah Smart.

Vinylloving · 18/01/2023 12:59

I think you might enjoy mare of easttown (sky) and Unbelievable (Netflix), I am thinking in terms of strong female leads

He’s great isn’t he. I love him 🙈❤️😆 He’s come a long way since the early American Horror Story days!

madeyemoody · 18/01/2023 16:25

Definitely Mare of East town. Actually to think about it, it's very similar. Cop mum, teenage kid. Deceased child, raising their grandchild. Problems in the family. It's very similar

Jomummy1013 · 18/01/2023 18:47

So many suggestions here and I can't wait to get started. I have seen some of the shows mentioned - seen Mare of East Town. And the Fall. I didn't realise Happy Valley hasn't finished yet and now I've gotta wait to watch episode 4 of series 3!! Am loving this series. Sarah Lancashire gets better and better ❤️ I am not used to waiting to see what happens.
I am going to start at the top of the replies and work my way down so the next thing I am trying is Unforgiven, which I have googled and looks good. Has Suranne Jones in, so another Coronation Street actress. So a good place to start xx

I loved Ozark on Netflix. It’s just so damn gritty. I went to bed every night saying to my Husband “I’m so glad I am not Wendy Bird” 😂😂😂

CoQ10 · 18/01/2023 19:11

Don't think anyone's mentioned Strike on iplayer. Its superb.

sensechec · 18/01/2023 19:12

The fall is so gratuitously violent towards women.

gravyriceandchips · 18/01/2023 19:12

I keep meaning to watch happy valley is it really good?

😆 Oh me too but at times I wanted to be her. Another great female lead character.

DianePemberley · 18/01/2023 19:34

If you like gritty then Peaky Blinders might appeal. I didn't think I'd like it but got hooked. Avoid though if you're feeling delicate because there is lots of violence and morals don't seem to count for much. Its addictive though.

BenCoopersSupportWren · 20/01/2023 20:47

Mindhunter - the story of the genesis of the FBI’s serial killer profiling unit.

Manhunt with Martin Clunes, both series, both based on infamous true crimes. A rare crime drama that manages to be gripping yet not in the least bit gratuitous.

PAFMO · 21/01/2023 06:15

If you like gritty but also quirky, funny and just superb, then going back a couple of years there's Giri/Haji.

So many excellent crime/thriller TV series out there (Broadchurch, Unforgiven etc etc) I've loved, but almost because they follow an almost comforting format. Murder, investigation, surprises and twists, resolution. Excellent while you're watching, but as soon as you start something else, you're forgotten the details.

Then something comes along like Happy Valley (I'd add The Bridge, Money Heist to this) or Giri/Haji and stays with you.

I didn't much like The Fall. I thought it went on too long and Gillian A was still doing her bizarre slo-mo Mrs Thatcher voice.

NewYearOldCold · 21/01/2023 07:21

We're just watching The Fall.
