Anything like Happy Valley?

Jomummy1013 · 17/01/2023 09:57

Hi, I am in middle of Happy Valley, currently binge watching season 2, due to reading recommendations on here. I love it! It is harrowing and heartbreaking and Sarah Lancashire is superb.
However, the actress playing the teaching the teaching assistant Frances - moaning Myrtle - her voice is sooooo annoying, and somewhat spoiling it a little for me, lol. The whispering!!! But it's a great TV series with great acting.
I've watched and enjoyed Line of Duty, The Missing and Baptiste (with a weird crush on Baptise!!). Watched the recent one on 4OD with Vicky McClure in which was good and also the Devil's Hour with Jessica Raine and Peter Capaldi which I liked but I no longer have Amazon Prime so can't watch anything on there anymore.
I also watched one on channel 5 with the same actress as Frances - Girl Across The Street which was ok. I love psychological and crime series.
Watched the Rig on Prime but couldn't finish as was shit!
I know there have been other threads on here of a similar nature but wanted to find out if there is anything else around atm which I may enjoy??

If you like gritty then Peaky Blinders might appeal. I didn't think I'd like it but got hooked. Avoid though if you're feeling delicate because there is lots of violence and morals don't seem to count for much. Its addictive though.

In that vein, I liked gangs of london. It was a bit muggy and there were a couple of dodgy accents, but was good if you ignored that.

The fall on Netflix. Police/serial killer British drama set in NI.

If you have Sky Atlantic, Mare of Easttown with Kate Winslet is brilliant.

Netflix - absolute loved Ozark which builds so well over 5 series. Not one dull episode. Also Series 1 of Dirty John was really good and based on a true story. Just finished Harlan Coben's The Stranger which was enjoyable.

I did like Ozark but thought The Stranger was dreadful
Lots of silly little plots with no relevance to the overall story. Shockingly bad acting and just so fake. Hated it
Breaking Bad is great as is Better Call Saul
The Fall is worth a watch as is Ozark
We liked Goliath too and Fargo and currently watching The Night Of and Happy Valley on a Sunday

NooNakedJacuzziness · 21/01/2023 08:36

Ozark is worth watching purely for the peerless Ruth fuckin' Langmore

Indigoshift · 21/01/2023 08:40

The pact on iplayer is good. Series 2 is better than S1.

ChaoticCrumble · 21/01/2023 21:05

Karen Pirie on itv was good. Based on the val mcdermid books. Hope they make more of it.

didn't like the fall!

BenCoopersSupportWren · 23/01/2023 08:24

Someone elsewhere on MN recommended Rose and Maloney, also with Sarah Lancashire, on Amazon Prime. I’ve watched the first couple of episodes and it’s not bad, but HV standard but very watchable. SL plays someone working for the Criminal Justice Review Agency investigating possible miscarriages of justice.

beguilingeyes · 23/01/2023 15:49

It's old now, but Cracker with Robbie Coltrane was properly brilliant.

Silentsalamander · 23/01/2023 15:54

Broadchurch, Doctor Foster, Strike

SapatSea · 23/01/2023 22:33

Mare Of East Town - Kate Winslet drama. female, stressed out cop with extended family. When it aired lots of people compared it to Happy Valley and thought the writers/producers had "taken some pointers" from it.

Yes! I watched these for the first time just after Robbie Coltrane died. Brilliant series.

I also liked Karen Pirie. The little touches of humour made me laugh.

Seaoftroubles · 24/01/2023 15:52

Agree with Sottand Bailey, fantastic series.
Also River, with Nicola Walker and Stellan Skarsgaard, a police pairing with a bit of a twist.

colouringindoors · 25/01/2023 19:13

Also enjoyed Karen Pirie on itv.

The Bridge on All4 is excellent

Agree with Unforgotten - amazing

we loved
You Don’t know me (4 parts on Netflix)
it was great

also loved The Fall
trying to think but too tired so I will come back to the thread after sleep 😴

MagpieCastle · 30/01/2023 22:35

Agree that Unforgotten is awesome - great chemistry between the actors and also enjoyed No Offence. Bloodlands is also worth a look.

The way Sally Wainright writes strong, believable, authentically flawed female characters is an awfully tough act to follow mind. Once this series of HV ends I’m tempted to just start from series 1 again and binge all the way through, tying up loose threads and forgotten plot points as I go. Like some other posters I’ve also been watching Last Tango in Halifax and hugely enjoying SL and Nicola Walker as step-sisters.

mum2jakie · 30/01/2023 22:40

What platform is Unforgotten available on?

flabbygoldfish · 30/01/2023 22:56

‘Hidden’ is a really good Welsh police drama on iPlayer, hugely underrated but I really enjoyed it.

‘The Fall’ is very good as well.

StrictlyCandelabra · 31/01/2023 00:58

Of those mentioned, I would second highly recommend:

Unforgotten
Sherwood
Inside Man
Strike
Peaky Bllinders
Giri/Haji
The Pact
Broadchurch

I also really enjoyed Hinterland and Keeping Faith. Hinterland is on the iPlayer. Keeping Faith was also BBC but doesn't seem to be on there at the moment. I think if you ever restarted Prime, it's on there.

CherryogDog · 31/01/2023 01:07

I'll add
Mother Father Son (Sarah Lancashire is in it)
Whitechapel
The Tunnel
Goliath
The Killing (the American version)
The Capture
Giri/Haji
Line of Duty
Friend of the Family

Kaftanesque · 31/01/2023 03:02

Another one here to say Giri /Haji.I was blown away by it and yet no-one I know personally seems to have watched it.

I loved it. Shame it wasn't recommissioned for another series.

PAFMO · 31/01/2023 06:20

Yep- I keep telling people "have you seen Giri/Haji" and they all look at Mr like I'm mad.
Same with Money Heist tbf. (when I messaged DD to say "watch Giri/Haji" she was "meh" until I told her it was the second best thing I'd ever seen in terms of edge of seat, grit, humour and just difference.
Loads of crime series are brilliant, but follow the well worn path. These two were just amazing.
@mum2jakie Unforgotten is on Britbox. Think possibly also iPlayer.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 31/01/2023 06:36

Stephen Graham in Time and Boiling Point. Both fantastic.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 31/01/2023 06:38

Bodies. My favourite from last year. Didn’t want it to end.
