There are 2 existing thread were fans have been discussing rewatching series 1 & 2

www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/4694640-happy-valley-series-3-coming

I'm sure Ryan had worked out his mum didn't die in childbirth since there's a few weeks difference in the dates.

Also... I can see him looking up to Neil and trusting him as he has never been anything but nice to him... but his grandfather and uncle were pretty horrible to him in Series 1

storminabuttercup · 10/01/2023 08:18

@Greatly indeed. But if I remember rightly he was never convicted of Becky's rape, he was released from prison without being on the sex offenders register and obviously went on to rape Anne. But yes his crimes will be well documented.
There's a conversation in the trailer though with him and Anne which backs up others comments about him wanting to believe his dad is 'ok' so goodness knows.
It's all so tense

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/01/2023 22:28

Plus didn't know /remember that they told Ryan Becky died in childbirth rather then killed herself

And I love the fact it's weekly. That we can't binge - looks at @Emotionalsupportviper 😂

And that we can discuss and throw theories about for the week after watching

How very dare you!

I'm INSULTED!

INSULTED, I tell you!

<flounces off>

(Actually, someone posted a link on one of them to spoiler vids and I have fought the good fight and not looked.

It's been killing me . . . 😂)

I think there is something dodgy about the shop Neil works in hence the reason they wouldn't give Claire a job in season 2.

Money laundering by the wotsit gang? Signposted in Catherine's discussion with her ex.
Also the phone TLR had smuggled in said something about the newsagents. If it was just a message from the shop guy to confirm he'd be visiting why bother - surely that would be communicated through official channels. So was the phone and the message about something else?

AlmondBake · 10/01/2023 09:02

The shop is a Nisa, which google tells me is owned by the Co-op. So money laundering might be difficult? Though I don't really know how these things work ...!

Alison's going to get a parking ticket, but I don't see it as a big issue, Catherine wouldn't hang her out to dry over it.

It might influence her licence, though*. It may be that stopping her going back to jail means that Catherine has to admit to following Claire, and that this sets dominoes falling somewhere else for some reason.

Or perhaps something happens (unrelated) that Alison is blamed for because her flatbed is in that carpark, and Catherine has to step up and admit it was her etc.

*I have no idea how strict the licensing rules are

Emotionalsupportviper · 10/01/2023 09:07

TLR . . . does something extremely bad to nasty teacher

Please let this be true.

I can't believe a high risk prisoner like TLR is allowed to work in the kitchen.
Ok so maybe he won't get knives but there's hot stuff

I was surprised at that, Buttercup.

Especially as he had tried to burn himself and others to death.

storminabuttercup · 10/01/2023 09:24

@Emotionalsupportviper it made me think of the prison scenes in LOD with Keeley Hawes and the damage they did with boiling water and sugar!

WeAreTheHeroes · 10/01/2023 09:25

The possibility of a parking ticket being a story line, never mind a major story line is remote. How to drive Alison's truck however may be key.

Emotionalsupportviper · 10/01/2023 09:28

Madcap theory no. 2382: I know that many children in abusive families live with the feeling that they will have to rescue or protect their mother. I wonder if the little girl who never takes off her coat has a knife under there? She's going around fearing that she'll have to save her mother from her father one day, but perhaps she'll end up stabbing the pharmacist or a gangster.

I like this idea @EsmaCannonball - I'm sure that child is going to be significant somewhere here.

Like another poster, I've wondered about the effect on very young children acting in this type of drama. I'm sure that they are well protected - perhaps they have their lines, and the adult lines (muffled screams through the door) are dubbed in later. I hope so. I was brought up in quite a violent and chaotic family myself and some of this stuff has had me in tears.

Love LOVE Happy Valley … have seen all
apart from last nights episode ( haven’t read through all of this thread in case of spoilers ) 😁

Does anyone know how long this will be in iplayer for ? I’m wondering if I should record it as it comes up .

I'm going to be the first in the queue when the box set comes out, I can promise you that!

<Has vision of line of MNers jostling and pushing to get to the front. Resolves to go early with a flask, and wearing Tena all day knickers>

I did laugh with joy when I spotted a run of shops in Huddersfield - where Joanna caught up with Faisal. I’d visited that exact place recently to see a temporary art exhibition.

I LOVE it when that happens to me.

I feel world famous by association. 😄

Sulusu · 10/01/2023 09:45

Cracking episode.

Who knew that watching a woman sit outside a coffee shop, watching someone else, could be so tense!

Emotionalsupportviper · 10/01/2023 09:45

Greatly · 10/01/2023 08:06

If Ryan is secretly planning to kill Tommy then that's super stupid

He's a teenage boy.

That's practically the definition.

Oh, God! YES!

That was horrific!

newnamethanks · 10/01/2023 10:07

Have a horrible feeling that poor Alison will be agreeing to take the blame, and subsequent recall, for a murder committed by someone else.

AlmondBake · 10/01/2023 10:26

I watched that scene back last night. SO dramatic!

I also re-watched the scene in the headmaster's office, just for the pure joy of enjoying the PE teacher's face when he clocks Catherine, the stare she gives him after she's asked after his wife, and the fantastic dialogue where she wipes the floor with everyone! Not forgetting the reason she gives Ryan for knowing it wasn't him!

It was so good! I was willing her to go in.

I'm gutted Clare is involved in all this! What a betrayal...or is it

I’m on the fence about the parking ticket tbh. If it didn’t matter at all that Catherine didn’t get one, I don’t think they’d necessarily have shown Claire getting a ticket, but equally I can’t see how a missed parking ticket would make shit all odds to the storyline overall.
For sure the way to drive the truck is important. They’ve put so much emphasis on it already.

Sad but unsurprised at Claire being a traitorous cow. She’s always been, frankly, pathetic and easily led. Anything to keep your man…

absolutelyincandescentwithrage · 10/01/2023 12:03

@EmmaEmerald As well as the irony of the phrase "just your ordinary tale of country folk", I wondered if it was a nod to The Archers (the phrase was the strap line to that soap), which is where Sally Wainwright cut her writing teeth back in the 80s.

I'm loving series 3 already! I just don't see how Clare can be involved 😭 why Clare whyyyyyy

On a side note I thought the pharmacist had a nick name and they were calling him Pfizer 🤣

I thought that too at first Grin

I know, I actually hate the PE teacher more than TLR! 😂

So do I!

Perhaps because whilst TLR is a sadistic homicidal psycho, he isn't a sadistic holier-than-thou bullying hypocrite. And he isn't a coward either. TLR would cheerfully immolate himself to get revenge - you can see that Neckbeard would wet himself if he even got asked to help the police with their enquires. He nearly did when Catherine walked int the head's office.
