I agree. I don’t like the idea that Becky was in an abusive/incest relationship with her dad or brother.

TLR is Ryan’s dad.

NashvilleQueen · 09/01/2023 19:38

The clutch is significant. Alison mentioned it first in the flat and then again when she told Catherine to double declutch.

I think Ryan is plotting something against his dad for what he did to his mother.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 09/01/2023 19:39

Just catching up with the BBC obsessed with podcast and wanted to disagree with their suggestion that the Chaplain grassing on TLR was in anyway unexpected. He was played and manipulated by TLR and did exactly what was required of him.

ElfDragon · 09/01/2023 19:50

TLR cannot be related to Neil.

when Claire first started going out with Neil, Catherine looked him up on the police system to check him out (a big thing was made of this). She would have found out then if he was a close relation/associate of TLR, surely?

It wouldn't if he wasn't on his birth certificate? I don't think he is his dad though.

Norriscolesbag · 09/01/2023 20:06

In the ‘Sheffield’ scene they kept cutting between actual Halifax and Wakefield. Parking the cars they were both in Halifax.

ClarasZoo · 09/01/2023 20:10

My theory is that Ann will kill TLR.

IwantToRetire · 09/01/2023 20:17

Its odd isn't it that Ryan is shown to be so invested in his dad, but seems totally uninterested in his mum. Doesn't even go with Catherine to visit her grave. Never asks about her.

I think this is a flaw in terms of the writing, surely by now if not earlier he would have been asking about Becky, Catherine's daughter, the daughter of the woman bringing him up whose house he is living, rather than just some constructed concept of this father.

this has always bothered me.

It does show Ryan discussing his mum with Catherine in one of the trailers.

WeAreTheHeroes · 09/01/2023 20:25

I think it's simpler than that: he knows about his mum from her family having grown up in it. Just because we haven't seen him being told or asking about her doesn't mean he isn't interested. Plus she killed herself so Ryan may well find it too difficult because he feels responsible in some way. TLR is alive and is his remaining parent.

I reckon Catherine probably gets snappy and short-tempered when he mentions Becky so he’s learnt not to ask by the time series 1 begins.

ZoyaTheDestroyer · 09/01/2023 20:27

Ryan doesn’t know his mum died by suicide. He has always been told that she died in childbirth.

I don’t agree I don’t think.

in my mind Ryan has always known his mum was dead so bluntly speaking she’s of no use to him. Kids often have fantasies of their parents not being their real parents when they’re young and wishing someone better would appear and take them away. Especially if they’re a bit troubled having issues with whoever their parent or guardian is.

so Ryan would always know Becky couldn’t do that. But deep down there’s always this little possibility that his dad could. So when he’s having a row with his grandma he could be thinking about how much better his life would be if his dad appeared in his life again and he could live with his dad and have a laugh with him. And even after all that’s happened I don’t think it’s infeasible that he still thinks maybe his dad has been wronged to some extent.

TottersBlankly · 09/01/2023 20:39

Ryan waiting and plotting to kill TLR is my favourite theory.

I do feel invested in hopeless Faisal’s now rather hopeless life …

But Anorak Girl - that’s a quiet explosion waiting to happen.

PriamFarrl · 09/01/2023 21:02

I had a friend who’s mum died when he was about 4. Although it obviously upset him, he always said that he didn’t miss her and he didn’t miss what he never knew.
I think the same is true with Ryan. He has a mum in Cathrine, but no ‘dad’.

WouldJudasLeaveIt · 09/01/2023 21:21

I tried to take a screenshot but it's a bit blurry, looks like Claire only actually went to the prison once, the first time.
Would explain why she was alone when Catherine rang her in the cafe.

Don't we see them visiting the grave together in series 1?

Agree with others that his dad is alive so of great interest to him whereas his mum isn't. Seems very plausible to me 🤷‍♀️

AlmondBake · 09/01/2023 21:30

I think Catherine not paying for parking will become significant because their will be a parking ticket but Alison will be named (I'm assuming the truck is registered in her name) and it will lead to some complication about her being recently released. Then Catherine will have another problem to resolve.

Yes - it really bothered me that she didn't get a parking ticket!

mizu · 09/01/2023 21:31

Just watched. Fastest hour of my life, it was so good. The parking ticket thing will definitely be a thing!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 09/01/2023 21:33

Can anyone remember whether there has been discussion of why Becky didn't abort?

I'm not sure whether I can remember it or whether it is speculation in my own head but it could shed light on how likely it is that Ryan's paternity could be in doubt.

JaneJeffer · 09/01/2023 21:34

Never asks about her.
He did ask Daniel who then asked Ryan what Catherine had said. They were trying to keep the rape and suicide from him so weren't giving him much information. He probably gave up asking after a while.

Catherine said she was so messed up she didn't tell anyone until it was too late or words to that effect.

Yes he was running around looking at other graves
