I don't think the "our Ryan" is anything to go off really, a lot of Northerners call family members our, I suppose Neil has known Ryan since he was 9 and it wouldn't be too odd him referring to him as that.

Yeah I think Ryan is who we think he is.

I don't see Catherine as more relaxed about TLR.Far from it. She is just holding it all in whilst she gets her head round what's happening. That's why that last scene was unbelievablely tense and do good.As someone previously posted it just gets better. An amazing cast all round.

Agreed.

Another area of tension I'm expecting to explode is Neckbeard's daughters.

Those two poor little girls - knowing what is going on and trying to blanks it out. The older one just becoming furiously involved in her video game and the younger Beverlys taking off her anorak. I'm not sure if she's covered with bruises underneath it, perhaps self-harming, or if it just makes her feel safer and more detached - an extra, thick layer between herself and her horrible father.

A PP commented how "nice" he is to his girls, and he is, but that's both a warning to them - step out of line and this is what happens - and so that he can )implicitly) threaten his wife: she's a drunken druggie- even other mums have noticed - if she tries to leave him she's put them in danger and he's never so much as raised his voice to them. My heart aches for them. Inside they're so frightened and helpless. Even when he isn't in the house his presence is, and nobody speaks, or moves, or smiles. It's just so oppressive.

I loathe him so much! I don't know what I hope happens to him the most - that the Slavic Mafia sorts him out, or that TLR gets hold of him.

The latter, I hope - he'd be praying for death if he crossed Tommy.

Rollergirl11 · 09/01/2023 10:37

Itseems more plausible that Neil is being forced by the OCG to visit TLR rather than him being his Dad. All this talk of OCG’s and corruption high up in the police force is deffo straying in to LOD territory.

The dialogue is just so natural. I loved it when Catherine came out of the meeting at school after bossing it and said to Ryan “well that was weird.” Exactly what you’d say in the situation.

MavisMcMinty · 09/01/2023 10:37

Dang, wish I hadn’t watched it last night, wish I’d saved it, it’s a long old week until Sunday night. But this is how we used to watch telly, one episode a week, and it’s all the more delicious for it.

@Netaporter I also think exDH is Ryan's father. And that Alison has been bought back in as a device for Catherine to realise this (as their friendship develops and Alison talks about her abuse and pregnancy Catherine eventually sees similarities in what Alison tells her and Becky's behaviour).

Interesting - I hadn't thought of this, but I knew Alison had to be here for something specific. As someone said earlier - their isn't a single redundant word, scene, or prop in this programme - if someone so much as blows their nose there's something significant behind it.

I am expecting exDH to get killed by the Slavic Mafia as he investigates their activities - Catherine has warned him how dangerous they are.

I don't want Neckbeard's wife and the pharmacist to kill him - if they do I'll be so disappointed - I think he deserves a much worse death than that. It still wouldn't surprise me if the little one didn't do something to him.

I think people are right that Neil is TLR's dad, though it hadn't occurred to me.

MavisMcMinty · 09/01/2023 10:56

Oh yes, just been reminded (reading the Guardian review) - does anyone else think Neckbeard drew the cockenballs on his own car? Handy there’s no CCTV there, donchathink?

AlmondBake · 08/01/2023 23:14

All the actors are great but James Norton is just not rough enough around the edges for a scary criminal like this one, he's just not convincing IMO.

What! I remember being horrified by him in series 1 - all that violence and evil simmering away under the surface. And the scene where he beats up Catherine was so shocking. I remember wondering how on earth he was going to be able to play the vicar in Grantchester at all convincingly!

Absolutely agree

He's bliddy terrifying!

SO much so that I hadn't even realised he was the pretty vicar . . .

Did anyone else notice the incredible disappearing cake on the dining table?

I didn't @LindorDoubleChoc but cake always disappears off our table, so I probably didn't register it as being unusual.

I really don't think it's going to end well for Jo and the kids. When the little girl asked her why daddy doesn't like her was absolutely heartbreaking. I think the plan to kill Rob will backfire with either one of the daughters taking the drug or one of the daughters killing him to protect their mum.

I'm really upset about this too, as I think you're right. @PrincessScarlett

Twice now Ryan has come out with that line about revenge is a dish...

I think he intends to kill TLR, but Catherine will do it for him/take the blame, @duc748

Kneževićs - Kudos @AutisticLegoLover <quietly impressed>

[Sorry for long post/many posts - I've been very poorly this last week (actually staying-in-bed-poorly - that's how bad I was!) and yesterday was my first day up and lounging, so I went to bed after posting a couple comments and have come back this morning to an excited hive of activity, and am working my way through - please be patient with me)

Emotionalsupportviper · 09/01/2023 11:02

I don't like Neil either, he's loathsome, but I think we may have jumped the gun a bit. Do we know for sure that it was the prison they were visiting? And if it's usually a couple that visits, why did Clare not go this time and just go and sit in the cafe? Could this be something to do with the skydiving? That was in Sheffield wasn't it?

I wondered this @Believers - but a visit was scheduled. I wondered if Claire was unaware what Niel was getting up to and some other woman was going in with them. I do hope so.

“I’ve seen how you draw a cock-and-balls when we play Picture Consequences and it’s nothing like that” 😂😂😂

I know!

Mr Viper and I spat our tea out! 😂

Unfirtunately on the bbc programme website there's a video where the characters talk about the show and there's a scene from the show between two characters which suggests one is about to murder the other. I was annoyed when I saw it because I didn't want to see a spoiler, but either the person goes ahead with the murder, or the intended victim fights back and commits murder.

Thank you for the warning @Goldpaw - I would have been gutted to catch this by accident, as you obviously did. (Thoughts and prayers)

Such a good well thought out post OP, I agree with so much of it. TLRs Dad is mentioned in series 1 by Mike Taylor I think. He says no one ever knew who TLRs dad was, something like that anyway.

Agree - TLR's mother was a prostitute. There will have been a lot of contenders. (Of course, Neil may have been one of them) @miri1985

Is TLR actually likable to Ryan? I’m sure all will be revealed soon.

He will be @ScottishAngryBird - his kind can turn on the charm in a heartbeat. But I really think that Ryan will turn out to be biding his time.

JaneJeffer · 09/01/2023 11:19

Will we find out what's gone down between Ryan and TLR since Ryan wrote him the letter. Did they keep writing to each other and how did Ryan manage to get the letters without anyone noticing if so?

WeAreTheHeroes · 09/01/2023 08:01

The shop Neil works in is connected to the OCG and laundering money for them. He's being blackmailed/manipulated to getting Ryan to visit Tommy. He thinks it's to help them build a connection, but there'll be something else going on Neil is too dim to realise.

I am amazed that an in-recovery alcoholic is working with such close contact to alcohol - did you see the bottles of fancy gin etc behind him at the till?

As far as I am aware AA encourages people to live as normal a life as possible, not to avoid (say) supermarkets etc because they have alcohol etc, but that is different from being presented with temptation on a daily basis - where easy access is so obvious. He could even steal bottle and claim it got knocked off the shelf and broken.

A gentleman in one of the churches I worked in was an alcoholic, and we made sure that he NEVER had access to the communion wine, not because we were worried about losing a bottle financially, but because we were worried about him.

I've had a look and can't see anything. Sure it's not from a previous series?

A killer now I've got used to bingeing, but my word - it's worth it!

'Course he did!

Nothing has actually damaged the car - as Catherine said, tyres let down, not slashed, graffiti done with a wipe-offable pen . . .

Ryan was right - she should have made Neckbeard turn out his pockets.

MavisMcMinty · 09/01/2023 11:53

I love the name Neckbeard and how quickly it has stuck! Kudos to whoever first used it.

Janieread · 09/01/2023 11:54

This series is all very car heavy.

storminabuttercup · 09/01/2023 11:54

I don't get the joke about oats? Why did I think neckbeard was called Mr Oates? The boys shouted 'have you had your oats sir?'

Thank you - 'twas I, but I have to admit I stole it from somewhere else. I can't remember where or when I read it as it was a while ago, but it caught in my imagination and seemed right for this blustering, smug, bully.

Goonergirl14 · 09/01/2023 12:05

I think there is a link with the shop Neil works in. I binge watched the first two seasons as had never watched it and at the start of season 2 Claire was arguing with someone in it as she said she had asked them loads of time about a job...maybe they wouldn't employ her due to her being a police officer's sister...it is so good wish it would never end!

Agreed, also Northern and didn’t think anything of it. Family members we’ve not seen in years…second cousins etc still referred to as “Our Dave” etc.
