On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

I liked it , it was trying to tell us something, but I've yet to work out what , yet !!
..
very dark.

Waterlemon · 26/09/2022 22:09

LizzieSiddal · 26/09/2022 22:04

I enjoyed that but found it quite scary in parts and I’m not easily scared!

I didn’t quite get the explanation of the payment to the Senator. The prisoner said he was getting the payment twice? I don’t understand the “twice” bit.

well that was weird!

i only searched this thread out as I’m completely flummoxed by the senator case and the double payments too? And didn’t get the “pay the rapist” note either

Rummikub · 26/09/2022 22:09

Just go for the roller coaster ride!

LadyEloise1 · 26/09/2022 22:11

I gave up.

the80sweregreat · 26/09/2022 22:11

Therapist
The rapist
The woman he raped 30 years ago makes the text bigger and it reads , ' the rapist '

Beccatheboo · 26/09/2022 22:12

What a ridiculous farce! I can suspend my belief but for this drama I’d have to sacrifice it indefinitely! Why oh why would the vicar not have called the Police straight away?! Also, why would the journalist have been interested in interviewing Dolly’s character? Mighty grateful, that’s all.

primeoflife · 26/09/2022 22:12

@Waterlemon
Pay therapist is what it's meant to say but split the letters pay the rapist!

Rummikub · 26/09/2022 22:12

The wife was laying twice.

The assistant would see the message and pay ‘the rapist’ The senator. And still pay the therapist I guess later. But surely you’d bring that up with assistant candice?!

LizzieSiddal · 26/09/2022 22:13

And didn’t get the “pay the rapist” note either

I for that bit @Waterlemon. They said because she was in her 50s, the assistant would enlarge her text on her phone so although the wife would text “pay the therapist” it would be seen on her phone, in very large letters as….

pay
the
rapist

LizzieSiddal · 26/09/2022 22:15

I agree the Vicar incidents were unbelievable but I still really enjoyed it and am looking forward to watching tomorrow.

Mooserp · 26/09/2022 22:17

A touch of Sherlock about it

Mooserp · 26/09/2022 22:20

Also a bit like Inside no 9

Georgeskitchen · 26/09/2022 22:22

Can't make head nor tail it. Undecided about watching the second episode 🤔

Thank you!

Gonksmum · 26/09/2022 22:39

The US bits were great with lots of (literally!) gallows humour. As for the vicar's story- a tad far fetched to say the least. Still enjoying it, though.

HRTQueen · 26/09/2022 22:42

I really enjoyed it

Penguinsaregreat · 26/09/2022 22:47

I really enjoyed this too.

Norugratsatall · 26/09/2022 22:53

Wow. Really enjoyed this, can't wait for ep 2. Deliciously dark and intriguing.

ShadowoftheFall · 26/09/2022 22:56

Absolute bloody nonsense! Bring on tomorrow.

BarnacleNora · 27/09/2022 00:23

Oooh I really liked this! How did Janice manage to txt the journalist though? Did I blink and miss that bit?

Also does the vicar's wife have an extraordinarily well paying job?! Because that is quite an astounding vicarage if she doesn't! Never seen one that beautiful before and I've seen a couple! They're usually a bit more....careworn than that aren't they?!

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/09/2022 03:44

Waved to all. Finally finished at 3:30am with snoring baby over shoulder

I loved it. Deviously disturbing

firsg I thought Hilda was a horrible mum then we found out was child’s porn

i got the pay therapist v pay the rapist - clever

but not sure how or why the last he raped 30yrs wouid pay £253 or whatever the amount was

why would she and from what money

but wow the vicar. Locking up the tutor and her dna everywhere

not sure how this will end

will vicar kill her

will she be let go

wife of vicar very calm about it all. Holding tutor locked up in the basement

the80sweregreat · 27/09/2022 04:45

Janine must have sent the text to Beth the journalist ,when she held up the phone to the vicar just before it broke

foxlover47 · 27/09/2022 05:05

I'm prob being super thick but why is the wife paying him every time they have sex ? I get the therapist / pay the rapist now it's been explained on here but not why he's being paid

Rosehugger · 27/09/2022 05:37

I was intrigued by the trailer, and by who is in it, but having read The Guardian review, though very positive, I don't fancy it at all. Reads like a handbook for justifying male violence against women. Same old schtick.

LadyEloise1 · 27/09/2022 08:14

Even the Guardian reviewer says you have to suspend disbelief in relation to David Tennant's reaction to learning that there is child pornography on Edgar's flash drive.
".....This is a weak point in the tale..."
No sh*t, Sherlock.
His reaction was farcical, considering his occupation and because up to that point we were led to believe he was a pretty decent guy.
I thought it was daft.
