On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

DT as a vicar was just ' yeah, he is '
! Maybe he is one in real life ? Lol

the80sweregreat · 07/10/2022 19:40

Oh JN con act. It's just that his in everything !
Plus I don't fancy him. Unlike many of my friends

the80sweregreat · 07/10/2022 19:40

Can act

Oneearringlost · 07/10/2022 13:56

Sorry. I forgot to quote. The Janice person.

Dolly Wells (Janice) was the Abbess in truly bonkers and truly wonderful Stephen Merchant Dracula. She was fab in that too.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 07/10/2022 23:33

LadyTwinkle · 06/10/2022 11:37

It was completely bonkers and unbelievable, but I loved every minute of it. I liked that they gave us red herrings and made me think Janice was Grieffs wife. And did anyone else think there might be a head in that box for number 11?

Me too. It was completely bonkers. Loved Grieff, Janice and Dillon. And a shout out to Kate Dickie as the psychotic Scots woman.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 07/10/2022 23:37

Emotionalsupportviper · 05/10/2022 11:14

I don't think he did, did he? Hid dad the vicar did.

Border Force dogs are trained to sniff out human remains including very old bones

Have to admit that I hadn't thought of that . . .

Could he have shipped the head in a box that said "Human Head for Transplant. Do Not Open. This Way Up 🔝"

Would that have worked?

Um, the wife's head was a red herring wasn't it? He sent those blokes to the vicarage because that was almost certainly where Janice was.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/10/2022 08:30

Tho if he knew Janice was his wife would he have saved her

if the head isn’t his wife’s therefore neither is body why hasn’t he said that

rather then spend years on death row

His father is/was a minister in the Church of Scotland - a moderator, I think, so high up.

I liked that psycho Scottish woman, too! What a character.

He Has His Reasons (I expect) . . .

Probably we'll find out in Series 10. (Or not)

MrsLargeEmbodied · 08/10/2022 08:41

janice would have been grateful to grieff since he saved her, pointed beth in the right direction.
the bit aobut murdering her husband is an addition i dont understand

OperaStation · 08/10/2022 21:33

Just finished this and I was so disappointed that what should have been really good (great cast and some really great parts of the story) was ruined by the whole thing being premised on the vicar wanting to protect a paedophile. I just don’t believe anyone would go to such lengths.

LadyEloise1 · 09/10/2022 10:57

@OperaStation ".....the whole thing being premised on the vicar wanting to protect a paedophile........"

That's why I gave up about 45 minutes in to the first episode. I knew it wasn't for me.

TERFwithAcat · 09/10/2022 15:06

I thought the Scottish woman was going to be the wife?

Will there be a second series? I hope so as there was a lot of loose ends.

beguilingeyes · 10/10/2022 09:29

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/10/2022 20:55

I think i need to marry a vicar

eep if heating bills are paid

Don't be so sure...I knew a woman who married a vicar. He died young and she was given weeks to move out of their house. They had two young children.

Emotionalsupportviper · 10/10/2022 10:50

@beguilingeyes is right.

The CofE isn't as charitable as you might think..

LadyEloise1 · 10/10/2022 14:00

@Emotionalsupportviper
Shouldn't that read "....The CofE isn't as Christian as you might think."
ShockSadShock

Emotionalsupportviper · 10/10/2022 14:04

You're right @LadyEloise1

It should.

I'm a Christian myself, and a lay minister, but it still continues to shock me when I see the way the church authorities behave sometimes.

I often think that Jesus would do a good bit of *rse-kicking if he came back now.

LadyEloise1 · 10/10/2022 14:09

He certainly would.
All the treasures in the Vatican.
Huge wealth held by religious orders.
The treatment of mothers and babies in Mother and Baby Homes, the covered up paedophilia etc. SadSadSad

the80sweregreat · 10/10/2022 16:08

An awful lot of people that are part of a church are hard as nails !
Don't expect much sympathy from those quarters.

Jonad · 10/10/2022 18:37

The thing that struck me was that I often read how men who have done more than view images still either don’t progress to trial or get more than a community order or suspended sentence. How long would Ben have been put on the sex offenders register for - months or years? If they’d searched his devices they wouldn’t have found anything else. Was he 18 yet? I couldn’t remember. With a good lawyer he might have been found not guilty. He could change his surname, move away etc. So long as he didn’t want to become a teacher or a role with a DBS, would it really have followed him around forever? <misses point of drama>

Ben didn't have illegal porn. He made a joke about it without knowing there was actual porn on Edgar's flash drive.

Jonad · 10/10/2022 18:59

I know I was just trying to think through if Janice did actually report Ben to the police and they believed the memory stick was his.
