as usual bloody iPlayer will have them all 🙄 so rem this is tv paced 😛😁

On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

It was a 'black ' comedy / drama !

IaltagDhubh · 05/10/2022 09:54

What the Actual Fuck did I just sit through? Four hours. Four bloody hours of that! Steven Bloody Moffat wants locking up in a cellar somewhere and forced to watch that claptrap on repeat until he’s learnt the error of his ways.

I mean, seriously. I can accept characters that are unlikeable. I can suspend disbelief. But they have to behave in ways that actual humans might behave.

Right back in the first episode, all that was needed was a simple “Ben, shut up, this isn’t a joke. Janice please come with me and let’s take that flash drive straight to the police”. You know, like any normal person would have done. And that would have saved me Four Bloody Hours.

Does Janice have an iron plated skull? Did the hammer just bounce off? That might explain why she’s so thick as to ask a convicted murderer to her help bump off her husband - in front of all the security cameras in the prison.

Close up shot of wife backing into road without looking - seriously? And the bafta for biggest cliché and most obvious death goes to…

Grrrr. Four fecking hours.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 05/10/2022 10:21

It was amazing that the wife backed into the road just a huge vehicle travelling at a surprisingly high speed along a busy shopping street went past right.

LobeliaBaggins · 04/10/2022 23:13

Eh, WTF was that? The only thing I was happy about was Janice surviving. Everything else was such pure nonsense. Mr and Mrs Vicar and Ben all appear to be batshit crazy. Janice clearly is made of some industrial grade super metal that defies a beating with a hammer, and turns up a week later in the US.

Maybe I am just pissed that my fantastic theory about Janice being Grieff's wife came to nothing!

No - I think you're right - I think Janet could well be Grieff's wife.

Maybe feigning her decapitation was the only way she could get away from the evil influence of her emotionally, physically, sexually and financially abusive father,

Janice is GREAT, but it obviously a damaged individual, too. But she puts her damage to good use against abusive bullying men.

I like her.

A lot.

Emotionalsupportviper · 05/10/2022 10:40

I want a series which is just Stanley Tucci cleverly solving murders, please.

And plotting murders, too, please, @TheMadGardener .

Solving AND plotting.

if she's not a bit evil to start off with, why would she be plotting murder at the end?

I plot LOTS of murders (mainly of politicians) but I never carry any of them out, because (as Mrs Vicar said) the admin is excruciatingly complex, and I would rather sit on my backside and watch telly and drink gin than actually do anything, what with being bone idle (and or liking the crunch of hammer on bone).

I'M not evil. Maybe a bit devilish, but not properly EVIL.

I didn't understand and how he knew Janice was in the cellar and if there was a possibility his wife's head was anywhere in the UK surely that means he murdered her here so would be in a British prison not in death row in the US.

He could have killed her in the US and Fed-Ex'd the head to UK @retractablerule

Obviously overdue for a refresher on the diocesan safeguarding course.

My money's on titanium, @IaltagDhubh

Emotionalsupportviper · 05/10/2022 10:44

This has been great - I can't remember the last time I enjoyed myself so much, or got so many gin recommendations.

Thank you all - and thank you @Blondeshavemorefun for hosting us.

Mooserp · 05/10/2022 11:03

Another question!

How did Ben know that the flash drive belonged to Edgar?

I know reality is suspended in this programme but Border Force dogs are trained to sniff out human remains including very old bones (don't ask how I know!) so I wouldn't have considered that as a possibility

I don't think he did, did he? Hid dad the vicar did.

Border Force dogs are trained to sniff out human remains including very old bones

Have to admit that I hadn't thought of that . . .

Could he have shipped the head in a box that said "Human Head for Transplant. Do Not Open. This Way Up 🔝"

Would that have worked?

Emotionalsupportviper · 05/10/2022 11:16

Can border force dogs read @retractablerule - I know they're very bright, but could they be tricked by such misleading labelling?

This in spades!!!

However near the end Beth was looking at a photo on a dresser. Do we know if it had any relevance and who it was of??? I may have to rewatch that bit.

I was too busy shouting at the screen about why the heck the police has just left a journalist to wander unsupervised around a crime scene to put fingerprints and blood from the knife wound on her wrist all over everything.

Been knew the flag drive belonged to Edgar after his mum told him on the phone.

IaltagDhubh · 05/10/2022 11:37

How did Tucci know that Janice was at the vicarage?

Sleeptightnightlight · 05/10/2022 11:39

Glad Janice wasn't connected to Grieff as the show was ridiculous enough without added coincidences.

Also thought the repeated refrain of 'anybody could be a murdered in the right circumstances' was somewhat undercut by what was shown which was more 'anybody who acts completely bonkers and is surrounded by everyone else acting bonkers and abandons all logic to repeatedly do stupid things might end up a murderer', which isn't quite as punchy.

Sleeptightnightlight · 05/10/2022 11:44

IaltagDhubh · 05/10/2022 11:37

How did Tucci know that Janice was at the vicarage?

He got her schedule so knew she should have been at the vicarage when the distress message was sent. The people at the vicarage didn't report her missing. Therefore, whatever happened to her they knew about, so 'most likely' (according to him) she was still there.

I am going to have to re-watch when I get the chance.

I seem to have missed a lot of significant throwaway moments

the80sweregreat · 05/10/2022 12:34

Janice wasnt at all rational from the start
She should have discussed it properly with Harry and Ben snd maybe confronted Edgar too
Then gone to the police !
There were better ways of dealing with this !

the80sweregreat · 05/10/2022 12:34

Ps, I know it's not real ! lol

daffodilandtulip · 05/10/2022 13:16

In the first episode, when she was first put into the cellar, she was very descriptive with how she has cut herself, weed, spread her DNA around etc so that he would never get away with it. Is she describing the way in which she set up her husband for her own murder...G being the husband. Which is why she won't get into trouble by saying she wants to kill him because they know he is safe behind bars?

daffodilandtulip · 05/10/2022 13:18

IaltagDhubh · 05/10/2022 11:37

How did Tucci know that Janice was at the vicarage?

They said something like "she works on Sundays, that was the last place she should have been, there was nothing to say she hadn't turned up but also nothing to say she had left, so the last place she should have been was where she was."
