On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

@Mumblechum0 @FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge no I have seen those so it can't have been those.
It's annoying me now

LouisCatorze · 06/10/2022 07:41

It wasn't as clever a drama as it liked to think it was.

purpleme12 · 06/10/2022 07:54

I think I've just come to the conclusion that the whole thing was stupid

the80sweregreat · 06/10/2022 07:54

I enjoyed it , but it was infuriating
The classical music, the constant shouting , the fact that nobody would do this , surely ?
I liked the Grieff character ( only because I like Tucci) but that is an oxymoron as he is a murdering so and so !
(I didn't watch Dr who or Sherlock so not that Aufait with Moffat's work)

Did anyone else wonder how a vicar got through several days without a single parishioner or church warden calling him or dropping in or asking for help or needing info on church flowers/next week's baptism/wedding/funeral/pet blessing ceremony etc etc. It was almost as though he had no job just a dog collar and a massive mansion.

Vicars only work on Sundays. Everybody knows that.

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/10/2022 08:42

I don’t think the BBC does subtle. Unless it’s Gary Lineker’s eyeshadow.

😂😂😂

I gave up after about 40 minutes of episode 1.
It was utterly daft, as much as I saw, particularly the scenes in the Vicarage and the OTT response by David Tennant's character

the80sweregreat · 06/10/2022 08:47

Lol at Gary's eyeshadow !!

Yes!!!! Also his reaction to Edgar’s suicide as a vicar. Didn’t go to see the body or pray. Doesn’t visit Edgar’s mum. Doesn’t have anyone else in the church to talk to about the fact their verger just died by suicide!!!! Not exactly top quality pastoral care and very suspicious behaviour if he was trying to act normal.

My feeling was that Moffat had an idea that was basically episode 3 - I.e. wouldn’t it be really interesting if some normal respectable people (and who is more respectable than a vicar?) had another normal respectable person locked in their cellar. And wouldn’t it be interesting to have a clever Sherlock type character on death row in America. I thought ep 3 was the best and was pretty pacy.
The issue was, having got that bit, there was no realistic plan for how to get to episode 3 or get out of it again, or plausibly link the two stories.

Also, sorry Steve! I know it’s very easy to be an armchair critic and I’m sure this is all much harder than we are assuming!

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 06/10/2022 10:09

Excuse me while I run off to google some Gary Lineker eye photos….

Much as I loved it (and I DID!), I also got the impression that the writer had got to the last episode and then thought "Oh - bugger! How do I tie all this up?"

And ended up with the adult equivalent of " . . . but it was all a dream" that kids do in their compositions.

I'd still watch more if they make another 200 episodes series.

LadyTwinkle · 06/10/2022 11:37

It was completely bonkers and unbelievable, but I loved every minute of it. I liked that they gave us red herrings and made me think Janice was Grieffs wife. And did anyone else think there might be a head in that box for number 11?

purpleme12 · 06/10/2022 11:56

The head in the box didn't even occur to me 😂
Just thought it was a normal delivery!

lovelyboneslove · 06/10/2022 12:47

Complete waste of time. It started off so well and had potential. It featured really good actors and locations etc.

But it just completely lost its way. The last two episodes were rushed. There are more questions than answers.

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 06/10/2022 14:07

I love the fact we are all still here chatting about it 😀

I have come to the conclusion that it was not meh in any way shape or form and I didn’t guess the ending like I normally do with teev dramas. It frustrated me, shocked me, annoyed me, made me laugh, made me anxious and made me question what the feck I had actually watched.

I can’t believe I was going to bottle it at the end of episode one. I want to watch it all again and there had better be more in the pipeline!

purpleme12 · 06/10/2022 07:54

I think I've just come to the conclusion that the whole thing was stupid

Yes, indeed.

I did think it was a bit stupid all the way through, because not one character behaved like a normal human being - literally not one - but at least it was engaging.
I expected episode 4 though to have a bit of oomph about it, and deliver a shocking twist, or something. It didn't. The best part was the horrible wife being wiped out by a car.

It was ridiculous that Grieff seemed to have all these minions (including the Kate Dickie character) in Britain. Daft that Harry banged on about protecting vulnerable people... but fine with murdering an innocent person? He wasn't particularly upset by images of CSA either. It was stupid the lengths that Harry and Mary would go to to "protect" their son, who was innocent of any wrongdoing, so didn't need protecting... Harry even said it would be easy to prove the images weren't theirs. So... why?

The viewers were also manipulated to 'like' Grieff and his serial killer associate, which is a bit off!

I'd have liked Janice to have been Grieff's wife, or some other twist, but it all fell a bit flat, and as per a PP, felt a bit rushed.

Would I watch series 2? Heck yes!

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/10/2022 14:14

Must have been good as all chatting about it

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 06/10/2022 14:16

Lol, yes @Blondeshavemorefun ! Thanks for the thread!

Penguinsaregreat · 06/10/2022 14:54

I don’t understand why Janice behaved like she did. What was the point?
I also think the vicar’s character was unbelievable. In fact I agree that all the characters were unbelievable.

Emotionalsupportviper · 06/10/2022 16:05

The viewers were also manipulated to 'like' Grieff and his serial killer associate, which is a bit off!

I agree that the cheeky chirpy chappie Dylan, who was Grieff's sidekick, was presented as a sympatheic (indeed comic) figure, and I felt that was very inappropriate in view of the fact that he raped, tortured, murdered and ate women.

I didn't like that at all. Mostly I just got involved in the plot and forgot it, but when I remembered it made me shudder.

But as Wednesday Addams famously said, "Homicidal maniacs look just like everybody else".

TheFreaksShallInheritTheEarth · 06/10/2022 16:57

Yep @Emotionalsupportviper the serial killer’s crimes were actually made light of, and joked about! Awful!

And while I’m already moaning, DT and his “helping the vulnerable is my job” rant… the vulnerable ones needing help are the abused children, not the abusers you stupid fucking twat!

Just like the rest of Moffat's work!

Is there a book of it

wondering if same storyline and if obvious Janice is supposed dead wife
