On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

Mrs Vicar was shouting abuse and threats at Beth and stepped backwards off the pavement into the path of a speeding truck.

She ended up as a bloody smear on the tarmac.

Sorry - this was i n reply to @Supersimkin2

Seek and ye shall find <goes with religious theme>

<plans trip to Aldi>

FitYeDaeinYeMadRadge · 04/10/2022 22:49

I can’t believe someone would take such a dunt by a hammer it spattered gore all over the hammerer and not have a few scars

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/10/2022 22:50

Wow. That was good but confusing

yes I saw the end @ZombieKettle ive missed things before so see to end of credits

Janice is married 🙀

bjt where is hubby

her face was cleaned up well. Only scratch on forehead

was tbere actually kids porn on the usb

why was Janice so determined to think it was bens

so dt is in jail for attempted murder ?

wife is dead

i did laugh at the lady in the street who just walked over the bloody mess on the floor. I did think she would pick up her dropped shopping though

clever plot

that he knew Janice was at the house hence sent the men there looking for the head

and sent beth to her flat knowing she wasn’t there

so also neither was husband

unless as someone said Janice is a twin and is his wife and he killed wrong person

head explodes

but

means must be a series 2 in a year or so

Well quite. Even significant brain damage! It's all quite ridiculous but rather deliciously so.

NoisyBrain · 04/10/2022 22:56

I don't remember Lydia West being so shit in Dracula (sorry, still grumbling about her performance as the journo haha)

IMDB tells me that Lyndsey Marshall was in Dracula too. So that makes three of them including Dolly Wells. Maybe we'll see Claes Bang in S2 of Inside Man?...

MistressIggi · 04/10/2022 22:58

Oh I enjoyed that. Though I thought it would be fitting if they inadvertently killed their own son.
So glad Janice is still with us. I like journo's speech in the cellar which was basically saying any man could be a threat (I'd have to rewatch to get the words!)
I wonder was Edgar's mum abusive to him or was she only horrible to him once she knew he was a paedophile.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 04/10/2022 22:58

I’m amazed Janice could fly to the US so shortly after a concussion/ brain injury without any after effects.

I think Edgar's mother was just a horrible person. I don't think she will have been sexually abusive to him, but she was obviously horribly critical and undermining.

I wonder what happened to Edgar's dad? Did he die? run away with a burlesque dancer or the woman in the canteen at work? Or does he never leave the back bedroom and just sits there watching Top Gear repeats and smoking Rough Shag in a meerschaum pipe and reading the Football Pink?

LobeliaBaggins · 04/10/2022 23:13

Eh, WTF was that? The only thing I was happy about was Janice surviving. Everything else was such pure nonsense. Mr and Mrs Vicar and Ben all appear to be batshit crazy. Janice clearly is made of some industrial grade super metal that defies a beating with a hammer, and turns up a week later in the US.

Maybe I am just pissed that my fantastic theory about Janice being Grieff's wife came to nothing!

Forestdweller11 · 04/10/2022 23:18

Had to go and watch the after credits scene as I hadn't realised when I watched it. Definitely don't miss that bit!

Goldpaw · 04/10/2022 23:21

Jellykat · 04/10/2022 22:29

Why would Janice ask Grieff to help her kill her husband, if he was her husband?
We got that theory wrong Goldpaw

Janice said her husband deserves to be murdered. And he does, because he's murdered someone, just not her. Both of them were smirking away there, in on the in joke.

TheMadGardener · 04/10/2022 23:30

I'm very confused. And somewhat disappointed that Janice survived because she was a bit evil and manipulative.

DT had clearly gone off his rocker by the time the cops arrived.

No idea where the head actually is.

Journalist character was a waste of space.

Totally unbelievable that after being battered by a hammer Janice is fine for a trip to the USA a few days later. And is it really so easy for anyone and everyone to pop in to visit Death Row inmates??

I want a series which is just Stanley Tucci cleverly solving murders, please.

LobeliaBaggins · 04/10/2022 23:33

Janice a bit evil and manipulative? So would I be if I had been locked in a cellar forced to poo in bags by a panicky and possibly paedophile vicar( from her perspective).

@LobeliaBaggins if she's not a bit evil to start off with, why would she be plotting murder at the end?

primeoflife · 04/10/2022 23:56

I've just caught up.

I really enjoyed it, was expecting unanswered questions after Stanley T was interviewed on the one show.

Really hope they've commissioned another series.

Loved it was only 4 parts, I get fed up of these 8 parters that drag on!

"how does anyone ever get murdered there's so much admin" is possibly my favourite line from a TV show ever

Yes me too!!

retractablerule · 05/10/2022 08:14

I don't think Janice visited a week later. Grieff said he'd tell his FIL where the head was in exchange for strings being pulled to save his life. I just presumed he was now a lifer in prison which gives scope for another series.

I didn't understand and how he knew Janice was in the cellar and if there was a possibility his wife's head was anywhere in the UK surely that means he murdered her here so would be in a British prison not in death row in the US.

A lot of plot holes but I didn't care. It was crackers and compelling.

Loved the too much admin to commit murder line. Absolute genuine and very true!

retractablerule · 05/10/2022 08:15

*genius

Tilly4321 · 05/10/2022 08:36

But Grieff said he might help Janice but he only had a week left

He guessed that she was either at her house or at the vicar's house. He didn't know that she was specifically in the cellar

goldfinchonthelawn · 05/10/2022 09:29

I must have nodded off at some point. Janice goes to USA does she? How did I miss that bit???? I just saw DT chatting with ST by Zoom at the end.

I thought every single choice DT, his wife and son made were totally unbelievable in every way and I assumed they were all driven by some unrevealed motive but it appears not. he was just trying to save his son? If so that is very weak and unbelievable,. But I missed Janice living so I may have missed a lot more!

Gonegrey31 · 05/10/2022 09:32

There was a scene after the credits rolled....Janice very much alive and well....

the80sweregreat · 05/10/2022 09:43

Must be a deeper meaning to all of it
Baffled me , but maybe I need to watch it again

@TheMadGardener agree DT wasn't great in the police interview. That said I found the police officer very snarky and again seem quite implausible as she didbt come across as very professional.

Who cares! It's entertainment, none of it is plausible
