On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

Im loving the Scottish physco that picked her up from the airport great acting

on the edge of my seat

ednclouda · 04/10/2022 12:03

Omg wheres the wifes head

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 12:35

It's a different drama
Janice is really winding me up !
It's her voice

LobeliaBaggins · 04/10/2022 12:41

Been dying to discuss this.

How stupid is Harry the vicar, taking the fall for a pedophile while incompetently trying to murder the maths tutor in his own house? I couldn't figure out why he just didn't go to the police right at the start. I bet they would have found some evidence tying Edgar to the images, like his horrible mother vouching that he was a creep! Just ridiculous storyline. Yes, coveting his vicarage and that lovely kitchen.

Love Janice: so ballsy and fierce and clever. Hope she makes it out alive. I wouldn't have thought of leaving my blood everywhere.

Love Dillon and Jefferson- always been mad for Stanley Tucci- but hate the journalist who is weak as water and stupid to boot. Dillon's"Kill me now" really had me laughing.

Signeduptosimplyreplytothis · 04/10/2022 12:45

Been thinking about this on my lunch break.

Why didn't the police investigate further? A note from a suicide saying "this guy.categorifslly is not a paedo" would surely ring alarm bells and make them think "hmm maybe we should check his hard drive"

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 12:48

The 'good cop ' was very strange she was
So slow at asking the questions and trying to trap him. Fair enough , that note was weird
But I'm sure we are missing something with how it's written ? Like with ' therapist '
I Hope Janice turns that heater off soon
Poor Ben

LobeliaBaggins · 04/10/2022 12:54

I think Janice is Jefferson's wife. That's why the head of whoever he actually murdered ( or found dead) had to be hidden separately, so she could not be identified. Sorry if this theory has already been suggested!

LouisCatorze · 04/10/2022 12:55

It feels like a game of chess, with a grandmaster (Grieff) playing someone who is only just learning the rules.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 13:07

Good theory re Janice being the wife

Goldpaw · 04/10/2022 14:17

but who would spend years on death row for a murder they didn’t commit

Someone who knew his wife (Janice) had killed someone, and who took the rap for her?

Maybe. Who knows.

Mooserp · 04/10/2022 14:56

surely the headless body would have needed to be identified?

And when Beth was doing research on Grieff she would have seen photos of his wife and thought 'hand on, that's Janice'?

Mooserp · 04/10/2022 14:57

*hang on

Emotionalsupportviper · 04/10/2022 15:20

9.00pm seems so very, very, far away . . . 😟

LobeliaBaggins · 04/10/2022 15:22

I don't understand why Ben didn't just let Janice out immediately rather than hide away in the cellar with her? But then a man with that haircut can't be trusted to do anything right. Janice should have insisted he did if she is so clever.

Emotionalsupportviper · 04/10/2022 15:28

Maybe he needed keys to the handcuffs? (She was handcuffed to a water pipe or summat, wasn't she?)

Yes, you are absolutely right. I had forgotten that. Don't know why she agreed to be handcuffed at all. But still Ben could have called the police rather than hide away with her... I get he wanted proof but what proof do you need after you hear your parents fight about shutting a woman in the cellar?

I came here to say the exact same thing. I think Janice is the wife. They made a point of saying she was from Sussex after all.

Tbf he comes from a family of poor decision makers. It's probably in the genes.

LadyTwinkle · 04/10/2022 15:52

I don't really have a lot of sympathy for the vicar, at the end of the day he was protecting a pedophille. There has to be more to that then he's let on, because who in their right mind would pretend to be a child abuser just in order to save some random creepy guy from Church?

Yes - you'd think he would realise, even as an idiot teenage boy (all teenage boys are idiots) that finding someone in the cellar, bruised, bleeding, stinking of p*ss and handcuffed to a pipe, would suggest that something might be amiss . . .

Or maybe he though his dad ("I'm a VICAR! That's what we DO!") was just indulging in a couple of fantasy porno roleplays as seen on the flash drive that he blithely claimed was his so he could blackmail his father into letting him go to a concert with a mate, (little realising that wasn't anything as innocent as BDSM).

Is Janice maybe, er, Grieff's wife...?

Did he cut off the head of the person who was found so she wouldn't be identified as his actual wife for whatever reason?

I'm trying to think of what the connection is between him and the UK story

I think this

Surrey!

pennyfairweather · 04/10/2022 17:31

When do they mention his wife being from Sussex? I completely missed that bit

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 18:15

I think that Grieff mentioned Surrey in episode one? Can't be totally sure

Goldpaw · 04/10/2022 18:34

The Scottish criminal who is talking to Beth told Beth as they were getting into a car about 15 minutes into the last episode.
