On the face of it, it looks like an unlikely story following a prisoner on death row in the United States, a vicar in a quiet English town, and a maths teacher trapped in a cellar.

What’s their connection, you may ask?

According to the synopsis, the story follows a US prisoner on death row (Tucci), who is seeking atonement as he faces execution. It continues: “On a train in England, a journalist (West) is looking for a story. In a quiet little village, a vicar (Tennant) is picking up his son’s maths tutor (Dolly Wells) from the station.

“All four are about to be entangled in a dilemma that could lead one of them to murder.”

And as the synopsis also states: “Everyone’s a murderer – you just need a good reason and a bad day.”

Like we said, this series has a star-studded cast. Tennant plays Harry Watling, Tucci plays Jefferson Grieff, West plays Beth Davenport while Dolly Wells (Pursuit Of Love) plays Janice Fife.

The cast also includes Lyndsey Marshal (Dracula), Atkins Estimond (Hightown), Mark Quarterly (Cursed), Tilly Vosburgh (Maigret), Louis Oliver (Midnight Mass), Kate Dickie (The Witch) and Dylan Baker (Hunters).

Janice is a mass murderer. That's my final guess and I'm sticking with it.

Jellykat · 03/10/2022 22:24

Maybe the email goes through to Tucci? who has a lot of outside contacts..

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/10/2022 22:25

Ooooooh!

I hope so @Signeduptosimplyreplytothis

That would be a twist - a cellar full of the shallow graves of dodgy blokes who threatened and intimidated women on public transport . . .

Mooserp · 03/10/2022 22:25

I didn't understand when grieff asked Beth about how good Janice was at replying to messages etc.
Beth had only briefly met her once hadn't she?
Is there a chunk of time they've missed out?

Emotionalsupportviper · 03/10/2022 22:27

I wondered that @Mooserp

But I have absence epilepsy and just assumed I'd switched off.

No I think over the time since the train incident they'd become casual acquaintances - or that's what's being implied

Mooserp · 03/10/2022 22:32

I thought she'd gone straight from meeting Beth to being picked up by the vicar.

Goldpaw · 03/10/2022 22:33

Maybe Beth is a massive liar and they only did meet that once!

Rummikub · 03/10/2022 23:12

I enjoyed ep 3.

I’m sure Janice will figure out the lock has been blocked and the fire is dodgy.

TheMadGardener · 03/10/2022 23:16

Beth meeting Grieff was supposed to be 6 months after Beth met Janice on the train. If you can believe Beth.

Janice is obviously a secret agent or something and the "cancel the Skype call" email will raise the alarm somewhere. Maybe someone at GCHQ even now is tracing where the email was sent from!

Agree that there will obviously be some massive twist involving Grieff's wife. Maybe Janice's sister she allegedly Skypes with was the murdered wife??

I don't think the carbon monoxide will kill Janice or the son.

Harry was deeply unconvincing in his police interview.

This episode was even more batshit than the first two. I'm going to be furious if the ending is just a damp squib.

Celia24 · 04/10/2022 01:12

@TheMadGardener agree DT wasn't great in the police interview. That said I found the police officer very snarky and again seem quite implausible as she didbt come across as very professional.

Zog14 · 04/10/2022 01:55

I am watching till the end, but honestly this is a load of tosh! If DT had just told Janice the flash drive belonged to Edgar, none of this would have happened.

also Janice is so annoying with her totally obvious attempts at manipulation that I am beginning to hope they off her!

Beth is really annoying as well, literally everything she says annoys me. Hoping that Kate Dickie gets rid of her - unlikely though sadly.

The teenage son is typically interfering. Would anyone really care if he succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning?

The only saving grace is Tucci, who is such a class act to watch. Like the interactions with him and his death row neighbour.

Apart from the American cast, this is sub par and I usually love DT.

I feel better having got that off my chest!

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/10/2022 04:18

Just seen. Wow

janice is def a little nuts.

very clever how she she words things

she makes you think someone said or did something by saying that they didn’t

but the son. Oh wow. But would you really hide there hearing your dad say all this ?

and now his son might die

dt feels he is doing the right thing. Telling wife no then trying to kill Janice his self

tho how did Edgar know dt would take the blame and admit porn is his

unless it really is …..

and what will wife head show /tell

that it isn’t his wife

but who would spend years on death row for a murder they didn’t commit

and is Janice anything to do with him

she sends an email (via wife) then he writes a note to warden wanting to postpone his death

couod Janice be his wife

can’t wait for tonight’s one

and even better that people can’t binge

looks at @the80sweregreat 😂😂😛😛

I love a binge watch! lol 😂
I am still confused , roll on tonight !

MistressIggi · 04/10/2022 08:31

Edgar did know, the vicar made him copy the drive onto his laptop and when asked why he would do this said something like "because I'm a fucking vicar".

Tigresswoods · 04/10/2022 08:48

Didn't like the first minute of this last week so switched off. Gave it another go last night & watched all 3 episodes!!!!! Soooo good!

Why isn't it 9pm already?

Mooserp · 04/10/2022 08:54

I looked back at the first episode and realised it wasn't the same day when Janice met Beth. Ignore me!

LouisCatorze · 04/10/2022 09:06

I'm thinking that somehow Janice and Grieff are connected and that Beth was deliberately 'hooked in' from the first scene (on the train).

goldfinchonthelawn · 04/10/2022 09:10

I think the whole thing will be some far-fetched bollocks such as Janice is ST's wife and her head is 'buried' in DT's house (maybe she'll get them to put her in some preposterous hidey hole in the ground or in a barrel) and while she has been doing maths with his son she has been planting stuff on his computer going back years either because she and Tucci want to see if they can make the nicest person on eath (DT?) kill someone they love most - his son? Or because I dunno, Tucci displeased her years ago so she stiffed him on death row and he had to wangle his way out.

Something preposterous and not grounded in human psychology at all. That's my guess. Because everyone is behaving like a plot puppet - making decisions no one would make, all so Moffat can show us his genius.

I also think the blond man who pestered the journalist on the train at the beginning was a set up, in cahoots with Janice. It's going to be one of those 'we planned everything' stories which are so tedious because they are entirely dependant on all other characters behaving as planned, like little obedient robots.

But I hope to be proved wrong.

MistressIggi · 04/10/2022 09:19

The journalist could have been a set up, but the whole business with the memory stick and the verger - I don't see how anyone could have arranged that.

heartbroken22 · 04/10/2022 10:25

Not sure how they'll tie up everything in one episode. I was a bit annoyed at how they did it in season 2 of the capture but it worked.

the80sweregreat · 04/10/2022 10:26

The son did indicate the memory stick on the side and Janice used it. Episode one , so hard to know if that was meant to happen or not ?
I'm at a loss , I thought that the suicide note would go missing and it didn't
However, given how 'therapist ' was written and caused a problem there , maybe we are all reading it wrongly ?
It has a hidden meaning ? We are reading it incorrectly ? .. not sure how though
The lady cop was annoying , the one who looked liked she had a bad spell under her nose was funny !
I'm intrigued and annoyed that I can't work out what is happening plus episode two also puzzled me as well

Mooserp · 04/10/2022 10:40

The son was going to use his phone as a hotspot for Janice, but then saw the memory stick in the key bowl and offered it to her. Can't see how that was all pre-planned?

Although why did the vicar leave it there? Why didn't he hide it?

heartbroken22 · 04/10/2022 10:43

@Mooserp I don't think he knew what type of stuff there was on it and just assumed it was you're regularly naked people porn.

Mooserp · 04/10/2022 10:49

But would a vicar want 'regular' porn hanging abut in his house?

I realise this is only a small question amongst many other much larger ones regarding the vicar's behaviour.

I like this tweet -

I'm tempted to spend my day making ridiculous decisions but justifying them to myself by yelling "I'm a vicar!!"
