The cast is great and I am intrigued by the setting/sweeping scenery etc and it now all on Paramount.
So is it worth investing time?

Can people who love this series please explain to me what on Earth they love about it? It's just terrible. Beth has to be the worst female character of all time in TV or film! She's absolutely insufferable, as is her idiotic beau Rip. The script is unrealistic beyond belief and it's basically just a horrible murderous family who have no redeeming qualities. I keep wishing something bad happens to all of them (Beth/Rip/John especially!) but nothing ever does. Aside from the scenery and a few rodeo scenes, why are people rating this show so highly?

Yes, all this. It's terrible and totally absurd. I SO wanted to love it.

However, 1883 was a joy from start to finish. Scarcely credible that the script was written by the same guy.

One thing I did like were the bits about Native American traditions and they all appear more likeable and human than the redneck hillbilly ranchers of whom KC is the worst.

We thought the native American storylines were sadistically brutal. Like racist porn.

I've been wanting/meaning to watch Yellowstone.

Tried & gave up with both 1883 & 1923 so I don't think that I'll even try Yellowstione!

MarshaBradyo · 07/08/2023 16:01

We couldn’t get past Beth in the end. She was insufferable

MarshaBradyo · 07/08/2023 16:01

And I loved the scenery and majestic views and watched for that but in the end she was too awful

barbieseyebrows · 07/08/2023 16:06

I love it so, so much

Beth is hilarious
Rip is beautiful
I want Mo to be my friend
Lloyd is adorable

Monica is depressing and I want to rip Jamie's arms off and beat him with them

QuebecBagnet · 07/08/2023 16:06

1883 was amazing. I wish it had carried on rather than jumping to 1923 which was ok but not as good. Though I’ll definitely watch the next season if there is one.

Beth, is this you?😱

Heh, I'm glad others agree with me on the insufferable Beth and on the absurdity of the plot. It has such high ratings, I thought I was going mad.

Just out if curiosity @barbieseyebrows what is it about Jamie that you disliked so much? I genuinely didn't get why everyone hated him. He was the only normal one and I felt sorry for him most of the time. Yes, I get why Beth was angry with him because of THAT incident when they were teens, but nothing justified her unhinged crazy behaviour. And aside from that, I genuinely didn't understand the Jamie hate and was always wishing he would win against his horrible family.

barbieseyebrows · 07/08/2023 16:40

I wish I was Beth Blush

Jamie was just unwatchable.. his smarmy face. I do realise he was a product of his upbringing and probably couldn't win.. but he wasn't all that bright, was he? Despite the Harvard degree.

He made some very questionable decisions.

I probably can't get past what he did to Beth. I wish she'd just killed him when she first threatened to

Arseulaundress · 07/08/2023 16:41

I mean, we thought they were all sociopaths.

Are you sure you're not Beth? 🤪

He was a teen and made a mistake. He wasn't acting to purposefully hurt her, but to protect his (deranged) family and his father's reputation. It was bad judgement from a teenager who didn't realise the full consequences of his actions and wasn't done maliciously to hurt her. Her reaction and future actions against him were completely psycho-level horrific. She belonged in a mental institution with a padded room.

Also, I though Jamie was actually very handsome 😃 and there is nothing wrong with not being an illiterate redneck (like Rip).

(I do realise we're debating fictional characters by the way 🤣)

MarshaBradyo · 07/08/2023 17:00

I didn’t get to the episode where they explained why Beth was so psychotic

They were very cruel to Jamie in the lead up and it put me off

It's explained in season 3 episode 5 if you're curious (I just looked up what episode it was 😂) .

Oh no I'm a big Rip fan - although only with his hat on 👀

He's not quite the babe in real life

I want to live in that house. The baby cows are also adorable, I was saying to my husband that show could make me vegan very quickly

I thought it was very funny too. Some cracking lines..

Love the scenery, happy to state that I think they're all fucked up and clearly needed to spend some time with professionals to talk over their feelings but I'm definitely a convert to the cowboy lifestyle

Hoping to visit a ranch in Arizona next year due to this show!

whatsinanameeh · 07/08/2023 18:06

We tried to watch Yellowstone, got about 5 episodes in and I just said. I can't watch this anymore. I don't like a single character, they are all awful. I also don't believe anyone loves like that in the years and area it's set. It's just so hateful.

DH likes it due to lotta boobs, guns and manliness except he said it's actually a good plot.

That's how I felt when watching Heartland 😍 That's the dream lifestyle and ranch I would want. I wouldn't want to live on the murderous Dutton ranch with everyone beating each other up and then sending them to the train station 🤣 Not quite the idyllic lifestyle

midsomermurderess · 07/08/2023 18:14

It’s basically Dallas. In Montana, a cattle ranch, but Dallas.

midsomermurderess · 07/08/2023 18:15

And the men are so insecure, willy-waving twits. Punching someone in the face is light banter. It soon gets wearisome.

Arseulaundress · 07/08/2023 19:04

The violence was gross. And yes, the masculinity in it was so fragile and unattractive.

User1755387908 · 07/08/2023 20:34

I was wondering whether to try this for the third time, I liked the other two short series but have got about as far as episode 3 or 4 of this and it seems not as good, it has got good reviews though

Forestdweller11 · 07/08/2023 22:33

Just finished series 5 episode 8. Yellowstone was like a cult really. They were all totally unlikeable, but mesmerising. The scenery is breath taking, the horses and horsemanship are spectacular. Plus John's house. I want it. Recently I've been looking for 'lodge holidays' in the UK. Nothing matches up. My enthusiasm for such a holiday has waned. I've not lusted after a log cabin since Monarch of the Glen was on TV.

I've started on 1883...

tennissquare · 07/08/2023 22:39

@Forestdweller11 , I spent so much of last year dreaming of Montana!!

Massivescreen · 07/08/2023 22:45

@Forestdweller11 I like the cult analogy! We watched the whole thing and every episode I said things like “the characters are awful” and “I have no idea what’s going on” and “this storyline is ridiculous” “there is too much violence”… but it was strangely compelling and mesmerising!

I've just been looking at ranch holidays in Montana. Slight snag as I'm terribly allergic to horses. But I figure I could just sit on the porch and drink whisky.

Snap! We said the same things but had to watch the next episode and then the next ....

I feel bereft now we've finished it; with little if any hope of series 5 concluding.
