I agree. I loved this episode, too. It laid down the foundations of the future storyline.

Laenor is much better than how I imagined him. So is Alicent. Warmed up to Daemon as well. Bit disappointed with the the Lannisters. They are my usual favourites.

MuddlerInLaw · 06/09/2022 10:26

Help needed! There was a bit of intrigue I didn’t understand.

When Lyonel Strong (I think) suggested Laenor as a good match for Rhaenyra he then said something like “but he’s away at the war and who knows if he’ll survive”.

Now … did he mean “Everyone else thinks he’s a good match, we don’t, so best leave him to die out there.Wink

Or did he mean “ Look, if you don’t send help Laenor might die and he’s your best hope of a smooth succession.”?

I’m hoping this bit of politicking is clearer to those if you who’ve read the books …

WhathaveIdoneagain · 06/09/2022 11:24

@MuddlerInLaw I thought Ser Strong was genuinely wished for Laenor's survival.

There is no proper novel written about this era. No dialogue. We only read history books written by the Maesters who are educated at Oldtown, the seat of the Hightowers. As you can imagine they are very biased.

MuddlerInLaw · 06/09/2022 11:31

So then he’d be in the “Send help” camp? As I remember it his remark annoyed the King - who had been resisting pleas to intervene in Daemon’s vanity war.

LobeliaBaggins · 06/09/2022 13:11

I am getting a little weary of all that flying blonde hair and Viserys' existential angst.

Also, Daemon took 3 years to defeat the Crabfeeder even with a dragon?

ClaudineClare · 06/09/2022 14:30

I really want some humour. It is all too po-faced. I am honestly a bit disappointed. I will keep watching though.

BorgQueen · 06/09/2022 14:43

I’m just not feeling it.
Daemon’s dragon is a ridiculous looking thing, looks like they stole it from Jason and the Argonauts .

LobeliaBaggins · 06/09/2022 15:33

Po-faced and portentous are the exact words.

Robin233 · 06/09/2022 17:51

I will need to watch episode 3 again.
Didn't think it was as good a 2.
But 'I can't wait till the next episode'
In the mean time back to The Sandman.

Was daemon burnt? I thought Targaryans couldn’t be burnt. I think I need to rewatch all the episodes because I’ve still not got all the character names locked in!

I didn’t notice the burn but so far Daenerys is the only Targaryen who has proven to be able to withstand fire/extreme heat, despite the commonly held belief both in Westeros and in real life. That’s why she’s referred to as The Unburnt. Her brother Viserys was killed by molten hot gold and another Targaryen (not in the HotD era, so not a spoiler) drank wildfire as he thought it would turn him into a dragon but was killed.

As for the character names, they’re all pretty similar. Some yet to be born characters even have the same name and coexist at the same time, although it’s yet to be seen if they will decide to chance them for the show to make it easier.

The show runners have said that there’s going to be 3 or 4 different types of dragon which is why they don’t look like Daenerys’s . I’d imagine it’s to help differentiate them all as apparently there’s going to be 17 of them in total throughout the show’s run.

Can't wait to see them 😁

Sorry if this has already been brought up but why is Sky Atlantic so low-res? It's almost unwatchable. Please help!

AuntieMarys · 07/09/2022 07:08

I really enjoyed episode 3 though I would like to have seen more of Crab Man. We have subtitles on otherwise I wouldn't know who anyone was!

I could never watch GoT during the day either which was really hard as I wanted to watch it as soon as I got up in the morning. Sometimes I’d be thinking about it all day. 😂

I’ve just got round to watching this week’s episode. For me it was the best one yet. I thought it had a real GoT feel.

We used to close the curtains (thick winter ones) to watch it Monday morning. I think our neighbours probably thought we were having a sesh! I can’t say I feel as much urgency to watch this series.

limitedperiodonly · 07/09/2022 10:36

I really wanted to like this and I'm going to stick with it but it's not very good.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 07/09/2022 11:10

I liked episode 3 - bit more action, dragons, the crab bits. SPOILERS INCOMING....(are we allowed to discuss spoilers?)

Loved the scene with Daemon and the Crabfeeder for its proper GoT gore, but I do agree with the pp who asked why on earth they were 3 years into a war when they have at least 2 dragons and clearly one dragon can incinerate 50 pirates in one burst of flame, not to mention take out ships from a long range. Also why didn't Daemon just have his dragon put his head into the cave entrance and burn them all out? However, nitpicking about the feasibility of battles involving dragons is better than being bored by Small Council meetings. I was confused by Daemon's anger when Viserys said he would send help - was it that he thought it was too little too late and 10 ships would make zero difference, or was it that he didn't want Viserys swooping in at the last minute to take the credit?

I also thought the stag CGI was dodgy - the dragons looked good with the exception of the hind legs, but the stags didn't.

Agree. I feel very sad about it. I think HBO picked the wrong spin off.

ClaudineClare · 07/09/2022 11:30

Being at a loose end last night, I rewatched the first three episodes of GOT. Sharp, witty dialogue, characters to get behind, intrigue. Everything this series lacks.

My kindle is upstairs so I can't check the book atm, but I'm fairly sure that part of the war taking so long was that the Trinity had fairly accurate scorpions (like a catapult size crossbow) that were a threat to the dragons, so it's not as simple as dragon=win.

ShesNotTheMessiah · 07/09/2022 12:33

I think it's missing a heart, at the minute.

GoT had Ed Stark - a Good Man. Played by Sean Bean who lots of people have a soft spot for.

That meant, right from the off you had someone to root for. By the time he was gone, some of the other characters had fleshed out (e.g. Tyrion or Arya) and so you had a few you were invested in and wanted to see do well.

After the last episode, maybe Daemon is starting to be someone to root for in a love-to-hate way, but am not sure.

All the others: meh. Those I can remember I don't much care if they live or die. Many of the side players are instantly forgettable.

I am rooting for the show, though. I REALLY hope it settles into something great.

limitedperiodonly · 07/09/2022 12:37

But this is a TV show being discussed on Telly Addicts. We shouldn't have to keep referring to the books and finding excuses as to why the battle has taken so long. The book explanation doesn't even make sense. There aren't Scorpion weapons in the show. The Crabfeeder and his army are under siege in a cave after a battle lasting three years. What have they got to eat apart from crabs and each other? Daemon and the Sea Snake don't need to attack them. They can just wait it out. Obviously that wouldn't be very dramatic but it's the writers' job to think their way out of that, not the viewers.

Honeyroar · 07/09/2022 14:27

Yes that’s right, it lacks heart. I don’t particularly care about any of them.

SammyScrounge · 07/09/2022 20:57

It is not grabbing me yet. Characters are not so striking as on GoT. Am feeling a bit disappointed
