@jellycat I felt like the acting was off then. Instead of being amazed...their reaction (Stuart, rainie, Karen and Bernie included) was like she gave birth to an alien...I was like what's going on! The poor child!

flyingdream · 30/03/2022 22:04

I think the only person that's acted a realistic birth in the tv world is Chelsea!

Jellykat · 30/03/2022 22:17

Exactly flyingdream, couldve well been an alien judging by their reactions!

coldlistened · 31/03/2022 04:34

I’m finding the whole Stuart baby story incredibly depressing. Very cruel of Rainie to just force the baby back onto Bernie like that.

the80sweregreat · 31/03/2022 06:28

I know that EE is far fetched , but having a surrogate baby storyline and a man dealing with breast cancer ( which is rare ) is just too much really! It is stretching two very different story lines very thin!

lazymum99 · 31/03/2022 10:25

When I saw their reactions of the birth I thought maybe 2 babies had slipped out! It was very strange.
And yes combining the make breast cancer story with the surrogacy is too much

TenRedThings · 31/03/2022 11:07

That whole birth scene was just weird. Bernie seems to have returned slightly deranged and very angry. The stunned reaction to the baby's arrival led me to believe it must be a different race, I meant weren't they expecting a baby ? Stuart may be on to something because he's actually looking healthier than he has in a while Grin, the whole storyline is such a car crash of improbabilities, another baby to stash in the cupboard only to surface down the line as a troubled teen !

StEval · 31/03/2022 11:55

Hate the whole surrogate storyline and loathe Uncle Fester and Rainie.
Utterly grim the whole thing, zero worry or any type of compassion for Bernie
Just heres the K , lets have a baby, oh no we dont have the money , you keep it !
Never mind Rainies addictions, SS would be all over it.

EmeraldShamrock1 · 31/03/2022 12:20

The labour scene was crazy.

Women are often portrayed as crazy angry during birth.
Bernie was giving out stink even before Stu before starting the singsong.

I did find the episode emotional Rainie's happiness and sadness, Chelsea bonding with Mac Mia and Jordan.

coldlistened · 31/03/2022 16:45

I thought the baby had been born not breathing based on the reaction.

Does anybody else find these fake baby holding scenes stupid? I get it’s because of Covid but ffs, at least use a realistic baby doll instead of having the characters cradle a visibly empty blanket.

mycatisannoying · 31/03/2022 17:59

In reality, Bernie would be considered vulnerable. She clearly has learning difficulties, and was pregnant as a young teen. She'd be on SS's radar, which is why the surrogate storyline is particularly distasteful.

Akire · 31/03/2022 18:05

Would you consider her have learning difficulties? I just put her in like C stream at school able get handful GCSE at maybe C/D grade and destined have low skilled jobs. She’s no bright spark but perfectly capable holding down many with skill. Interesting take

Blondeshavemorefun · 31/03/2022 18:12

I didn’t think she had learning difficulties

Tho was surprised she happily gave up baby after her previous experience

the80sweregreat · 31/03/2022 18:20

Bernie has always been honest that she wants the money and willing to help out a couple who wanted a child of their own ( to put in the kiddie cupboards)
Looks like she may not get any money though as it stands! It is a horrible story line

mycatisannoying · 31/03/2022 18:24

She would have definitely been considered 'slow' back in the day. I didn't think there was any mention of her gaining qualifications at school.
Very overweight for her age, with no real interests.
I like Bernie. She's lovely. But she's definitely the type of person who could be taken advantage of.

girlmom21 · 31/03/2022 18:28

I thought she had learning difficulties too. Dyslexia at the very least. I'm sure there was a whole storyline on it.

But I agree with the SS thing. She's still very young too to be a surrogate. How hasn't the midwife reported them?

Akire · 31/03/2022 18:30

Maybe because she is over weight and dresses poor like that awful coat. If she was size 12 with a Gf on her arm (wasn’t there someone at start of the pregnancy?) she would look less “slow”. A lot of it is poverty related, where would she had benefit of interesting hobbies or swimming or dance classes or sports when your mum works all hours and you have disabled siblings. Bernie sort person go back in later life maybe like Dee and improve her lot!

I can’t believe her mum is even going take any money she gives her from the baby.

StEval · 31/03/2022 18:32

I dont think she does either, she started a chess club at school. I think she was portrayed as being overweight and very shy, lacking in confidence but intelligent. She came up with the surrogate idea to support her mother/ family financially.
mycatisannoying · 31/03/2022 18:33

Dee only managed to improve her lot because Phil bought her the salon. Typical Eastenders and its view of women.
Realistically, her one English GCSE was never going to set the world alight ...

the80sweregreat · 31/03/2022 18:47

Did Bernie win the chess tournament? I think she did ? She was good at it after being coached by Ted and Patrick ( I had forgotten this!)
She is alright , but I imagine she might have struggled at school or not been that engaged. She fell pregnant quite young too.
She did steal a mobile once and had a rebellious spell , but mostly she is a nice girl.
She was with Tiffany for a while too

Akire · 31/03/2022 18:50

Forgot about the chess in shed! Would love her mum to say no love keep all money you had for baby (unless she spent £7000 on living expenses so far) and set her up with market stall or some sort business.

Akire · 31/03/2022 18:51

I hope they don’t do a ben2 and send Tommie off young offenders as baby faced nice kid then comes back all spotty and agro. Poor Scarlett think time cut your loses and move back i to the Vic.

the80sweregreat · 31/03/2022 18:54

I'd like Bernie to succeed , but maybe she'll bond with her son and want to be his mum ( esp if Rainie doesn't want him :(
Not sure how this will pan out and it's all just horrible anyway. Poor baby !
Rainie and stu , not the best candidates to be parents really ( I know Stu already has a grown up daughter, but he doesn't see her)
Can't remember her name ?

Bernie was the alternative to the pretty, sparky duo of Tiff and Bex. They didnt want to be friends with her and they suspected Ted of grooming her when they played chess. She held her own with them and she and Tiff got together. I really like the character shes vulnerable but strong and is who she is. I love Karen as a character but want more for Bernie than NMW and too many kids.
the80sweregreat · 31/03/2022 19:19

Wasn't it Louise Mitchell who didn't like Bernie much either ?
It would be fantastic for her to do well at something or make it big in life : what a positive storyline that would be!! It won't happen though :(
