Ok here’s our next weekly series

Has good reviews

In the newly partitioned city of Berlin, Harry Palmer is a sharp working-class young man with sophisticated tastes determined to make a lot of money. A wholesaler, retailer, fixer, smuggler, Harry’s varied interests bring him into contact with everything and everyone in Berlin in the early 1960s – until the law catches up and it all comes crashing to a halt.

Harry finds himself sentenced to eight years in a grim military jail in England, all his prospects abruptly torn away. But his impressive network and efficiency have not gone unnoticed, and a gentleman from British intelligence has a proposal.

To avoid prison, Harry Palmer will become a spy. And the case on which he cuts his teeth will be 'The Ipcress File'.

Harry’s links to the man suspected of kidnapping a missing British nuclear scientist result in him being conscripted for a dangerous undercover mission that takes him from the Beatles’ London to the Berlin Wall, from the back alleys of Beirut to the white hot sand of a Nuclear Atoll in the Pacific.

Thanks @Blondeshavemorefun. I haven't bothered to watch the original film as I don't like Michael Caine so perhaps I should do that before this version airs. Smile

I saw the original film with Michael Caine. It was very good.

CharacterForming · 01/03/2022 11:01

I love the film. The opening scene in his bedsit sets the tone beautifully.

It sounds as though the plot will be taken from the book not the film, but there are still enough similarities that you're probably best off watching the TV series unspoiled by the film.

Blondeshavemorefun · 01/03/2022 11:55

Yes I think I will give the film a miss

Darklane · 03/03/2022 15:45

It sure about this as I loved the film. Michael Caine WAS Harry Palmer & the rest of the cast was great.

Darklane · 03/03/2022 15:45

Sorry, Not sure.

Blondeshavemorefun · 03/03/2022 17:44

I think it’s hard @Darklane when they remake something, esp if seen the original

As I havnt I’m hoping will be good

Michael Caine was great as Harry Palmer and from the trailers I've seen the actor playing him this time just doesn't do it for me. I will watch and hopefully enjoy anyway.

Blondeshavemorefun · 04/03/2022 19:42

I don’t do mr Cole as such @kennelmaid but thought he was good in gangs of London

Seen the original film but don't really remember it, probably will when this one gets going.

Meanwhile, got to catch up with first episodes of Killing Eve and Peaky Blinders. And Our House starts tomorrow . Where does the time go Grin

Len Deighton (author of the Harry Palmer books) is a terrific writer, for anybody who likes thrillers. Some similarities to John Le Carre, but also some very significant differences. He's still alive, amazingly. Well over 90 now.

I love Michael Caine, so enjoyed the film, although it's not his best. (Get Carter would by my nomination there - extremely violent, but brilliant.)

I'll give this a go. Not sure if I can persuade my husband to watch it. If not, I'll catch up with it during the week.

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/03/2022 13:01

Must have filmed part of it in our local town. Just clocked Tom H walking past our library cultural quarter Grin
Like the 60s vibe. Bit like Endeavour. But hate those glasses main guy is wearing. Just look wrong.

DoraSpenlow · 06/03/2022 21:29

Why are so many scenes shot on the slant? Did the cameraman have one leg shorter than the other? Very distracting

Jansobieski · 06/03/2022 21:31

And the incidental music from kill bill Hmm

absolutelynotfabulous · 06/03/2022 21:32

Looks as though they're trying to create the 60s vibe with the slanty camera angle.

I'm liking it, but I haven't a clue what's going on.. Grin

WhatICallMyUsername · 06/03/2022 21:35

I am watching but think I might have to give up while the world is at it is. TV should be a form of escapism Sad
