Ok here’s our next weekly series

Has good reviews

In the newly partitioned city of Berlin, Harry Palmer is a sharp working-class young man with sophisticated tastes determined to make a lot of money. A wholesaler, retailer, fixer, smuggler, Harry’s varied interests bring him into contact with everything and everyone in Berlin in the early 1960s – until the law catches up and it all comes crashing to a halt.

Harry finds himself sentenced to eight years in a grim military jail in England, all his prospects abruptly torn away. But his impressive network and efficiency have not gone unnoticed, and a gentleman from British intelligence has a proposal.

To avoid prison, Harry Palmer will become a spy. And the case on which he cuts his teeth will be 'The Ipcress File'.

Harry’s links to the man suspected of kidnapping a missing British nuclear scientist result in him being conscripted for a dangerous undercover mission that takes him from the Beatles’ London to the Berlin Wall, from the back alleys of Beirut to the white hot sand of a Nuclear Atoll in the Pacific.

@Jansobieski

Must have filmed part of it in our local town. Just clocked Tom H walking past our library cultural quarter Grin Like the 60s vibe. Bit like Endeavour. But hate those glasses main guy is wearing. Just look wrong.
@Jansobieski claim to fame !!

My favourite ‘ box set’ of books are the Bernard Sampson ones by Len Deighton. The first set of three is written from Bernard’s point of view. The second set of three goes back over the same events, ish, but from his (limited spoilers here) wife’s point of view. There’s a third set of three, plus a prequel one.

Like The Ipcress File Berlin features a lot.

The first three were made into a TV series which I thought was great, but I have read that Len Deighton disliked the adaptation so much he hasn’t let it be shown again or released on video/DVD etc.

I'm really enjoying it. I often find this sort of thing a bit hit or Miss and this definitely seems to be a hit

Blondeshavemorefun · 06/03/2022 21:52

I like the dry humour of it

Was it actually the scientist though as I wasn't sure Blush

No-if it were definitely the scientist thy would have shown his face, not shrouded in half light, which is also why Palmer took the cup with fingerprints on to verify.
JaneJeffer · 06/03/2022 23:01

I wasn't gripped by it.

StrawberryPot · 07/03/2022 00:10

Thought it was brilliant.

Forestdweller11 · 07/03/2022 06:49

Loved it.

SueSaid · 07/03/2022 07:28

Finally, a decent Sunday night drama!

I loved this, Joe Cole is brilliant as Harry. All the characters are likeable and interesting.

The whole thing from start to finish was gripping imo. Seemed a bit ambitious to try and get the scientist out from East Berlin though.

ilovebrie8 · 07/03/2022 09:35

I quite liked it, the guy at the end he was supposed to be rescuing did not look the professor...his face wasn't clear...why did he take the cup guess it was for finger prints.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/03/2022 10:08

Hasn't Lucy Boynton got wonderful eyes.

JaneJeffer · 07/03/2022 12:41

I kept getting distracted by the main character being the spit of Mark Lamarr

youngestisapsycho · 07/03/2022 12:48

Loved it... now to decide to binge or watch weekly?!

SueSaid · 07/03/2022 12:59

@DoraSpenlow

Hasn't Lucy Boynton got wonderful eyes.
She is stunning isn't she, love her clipped voice and expressionless face. Very enigmatic.

I'm not a Tom Hollander fan usually but thought he was good in it too, I like the interactions between him and Harry.

DGRossetti · 07/03/2022 13:03

I preferred Funeral in Berliin ...

With playing like that I'm surprised they didn't pay him to leave..
