Ok here’s our next weekly series

Has good reviews

In the newly partitioned city of Berlin, Harry Palmer is a sharp working-class young man with sophisticated tastes determined to make a lot of money. A wholesaler, retailer, fixer, smuggler, Harry’s varied interests bring him into contact with everything and everyone in Berlin in the early 1960s – until the law catches up and it all comes crashing to a halt.

Harry finds himself sentenced to eight years in a grim military jail in England, all his prospects abruptly torn away. But his impressive network and efficiency have not gone unnoticed, and a gentleman from British intelligence has a proposal.

To avoid prison, Harry Palmer will become a spy. And the case on which he cuts his teeth will be 'The Ipcress File'.

Harry’s links to the man suspected of kidnapping a missing British nuclear scientist result in him being conscripted for a dangerous undercover mission that takes him from the Beatles’ London to the Berlin Wall, from the back alleys of Beirut to the white hot sand of a Nuclear Atoll in the Pacific.

Am I the only one watching on Sunday night

OP posts:
WhatICallMyUsername · 28/03/2022 16:15

Haha no I watched too @Blondeshavemorefun

Because of the clock change the kids wouldn't go to sleep so we didn't finish watching it until gone 10.30pm (DS10 still awake at 10.45pm even though he'd normally be asleep by 9.45pm in "normal" time!) We had that many interruptions I feel I need to rewatch it!

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/03/2022 19:57

I’m getting more Confused by it all

I felt at times that I’d missed an episode. But enjoying it nonetheless.

@Ragwort

I am enjoying it but can't really follow it at all Grin.
Same, I feel like there's too much going on and I forget what is happening from week to week - I feel like this would have been better run over a single week, an episode per night, that way there would have been less time for viewers to forget all the small, but important, details.
Housewife2010 · 03/04/2022 23:13

Tonight's episode was so good, but so scary. I had to look away when Harry was holding the shard of glass.

BattledoreAndShuttlecock · 04/04/2022 00:21

The bit where he sticks the wire under his thumbnail is one of the three things I remember from the movie: the first is the opening scene where everything is blurred until he puts his glasses on, and the third is the thing which happens right at the end which may or may not be a huge spoiler depending on whether they go with the same plot.

Housewife2010 · 04/04/2022 06:26

Very minor point, but we noticed that Tom Hollander was holding his cutlery out of character.
Jean looks exquisite. She's perfected the Paddington Bear "hard stare" too.

SueSaid · 05/04/2022 16:04

I'm still quite enjoyiny this, I love Joe Cole's Harry.

I'm a bit baffled how he could have allegedly just gone missing on the island and why they were put into such a risky situation in the first place with little back up.

Was the English village scene when he escaped on Sunday a result of his brainwashing, was it a hallucination or has he really been kept in England all along?!

Who'd work for the intelligence services! what a cock up it seemed back then we can only hope its improved. Maybe they're a bit more organised irl.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 06/04/2022 14:53

@janiiejones
He was flown off the island and it appeared that he had been taken to China but when he escaped it turned out to have been the US base at Aldermaston ( I assume), hence his emerging into an English landscape.

Blondeshavemorefun · 07/04/2022 15:56

I wondered if he was always in England.

As from when flown off island

'He was flown off the island and it appeared that he had been taken to China but when he escaped it turned out to have been the US base at Aldermaston ( I assume), hence his emerging into an English landscape.'

Yes I just wondered if he was seeing things in his delirious state, as he'd thought he was talking to his ex wife in a previous scene. But then the nuclear scientist turned up in England too.

I know it's only a drama and hopefully not fact based but the torture and brainwashing would seem extreme if still in this country but perhaps I'm just very naive.

Anyway I quite like, I'll be sad to see the last of Harry, Jean and Dalby.

TottersBlankly · 09/04/2022 18:05

That was all ridiculously entertaining!

Didn’t like some of the directing decisions - as if they didn’t trust the audience to grasp things - but I was drawn in despite myself. Perhaps because I don’t recall ever having seen the film.

Joe Cole has a lovely face - wish he’d do something with it. Lucy Boynton ditto. Neither of them moved a single facial muscle across six episodes. Hmm

Was glad to see Anastasia Hille given something to do this time; I exhausted myself in ranting about her wallflower wifey role in the Belgian / French abduction thingummy last year (name’s gone already). And Joshua James is just utterly stunning - could look at him pondering all day long.

Very glad the American didn’t die.

What shall I watch now?
