The "engagement" bit of the Frozen themed dance was very much playing into the dance narrative.

It is glitz and glamour though, not real life, and Rose has been sending it all up every chance she got, all the way through.

JanisMoplin · 19/12/2021 08:56

@DontWantTheRivalry

It's acting. None of it is real….

We’ll have to agree to disagree on that.

Their speeches have always seemed very heartfelt to me.

I am not saying it is not heartfelt. I am saying there is an element of performance every year, because they are performers. As I said last year, Ranveer was supposed to be having a torrid affair with Gio who had apparently brought her out of her shell and given her confidence again as an older woman.. Then of course when the show was over , he went on to a Love Island contestant. You do of course have the odd couples who are exceptions like Kevin and Stacey. But overall, I think it is odd to insist that every yearning glance and gushing remark on Strictly is a romance, and certainly I think Rose is far too sensible to throw it all away on a player like Gio. ( who is my favourite pro anyway).
StopGoQuitStart · 19/12/2021 08:56

Yes Rose was def hyper aware of the romance tosh and sent it up brilliantly in her interviews (smelly breath comes to mind!) but then on final night all that seemed to go. It was romance romance softly sweet dancing. She should have done another dance with sassy attitude.

Riverlee · 19/12/2021 08:57

I agree that AJ would have brought a bit of fizz to the night. Maybe they will her her do her show dance in next years competition? (Not as a finalist, but as a dancer).

I reckon they chose the quickstep so we can see Gio in that soldiers uniform again (blush).! Her couples choice was lovely and show dance was very sweet.

John and Johannes show dance definantly had a bit of wow factor - their best dance. They came out fighting and I really enjoyed it. As show dances, I thought it was the better dance. Nothing wrong with Roses dance, but Johns was a bit more ‘showy’.

I don’t mind Tess as the presenter and like Claudiaas well.

Hopefully Anton will retain his judge’s spot. The judges are less theatrical and more judgey with him. He has a nice mixture of being an expert, and being the nice guy.

covetingthepreciousthings · 19/12/2021 08:58

It's acting. None of it is real, any more than when you see actors pretending to be Romeo and Juliet on screen. They all say that every year.

Bar Rose, none of them are actors, they aren't given a script. They don't all say the same every year, some say similar, some don't. I don't believe it's all not real.

Riverlee · 19/12/2021 08:58

Incidentally if AJ was in it, and did a mega-wow show dance, I wonder if she could have won. Although pleased for Gio and Rose also.

SilverRingahBells · 19/12/2021 08:59

Johannes actually did comment at some point in the evening that it was amazing being able to dance at full pelt and not hold back because he had such a strong partner, and I thought "I beg to differ love, you need to look back at those dances with a more objective eye". But I'm not sure what he could do differently - he's just naturally fabulous (but then so was Aliona and her partners didn't fade into the shadows). In the end though being runner up to a voting juggernaut like Rose is a great result and they should be proud.

I think we need many more years of same sex partnerships to see how the dynamics work, and with any luck we'll get them.

lollipoprainbow · 19/12/2021 09:02

Felt a bit flat when it all ended after all the weeks of dancing they win and the show ends! Seems strange not to have an after show where they can talk to the winners and runners up. Felt a bit sorry for John and Johannes just standing there watching!! I miss pre Covid when everyone used to pile onto the dance floor and hug the winners felt more joyous.

Biscoffspread · 19/12/2021 09:11

I know it's a fail link but Sophie Ellis bextor talks about the impact of 'fetishising' the couples, and the impact strictly had on her marriage

www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-10052707/amp/SOPHIE-ELLIS-BEXTOR-Strictly-took-toll-marriage-husband-ended-counselling.html

Riverlee · 19/12/2021 09:18

@Biscoffspread

Thanks for posting. It’s a very insightful article - maybe one that all future contestants should read.

lollipoprainbow · 19/12/2021 09:20

If I was Tess, I'd be nervously looking over my shoulder at AJ, she has much more personality than Tess, plus she's now got history with the show (which is why Zoe Ball was such a good fit on ITT). An ideal replacement if you ask me!*

Good god no thank you I'd definitely stop watching !! There's nothing wrong with Tess as a presenter.

Bimblybomeyelash · 19/12/2021 09:27

I don’t mind Tess, but she doesn’t add anything to the show. But I suppose that is a good thing when the show is so packed full of personalities. I guess it’s right that Tess slows the others space to shine!

Newnameobviously · 19/12/2021 09:38

Is anyone else disappointed with a Shirley as the head judge? She seems to vote too much from her heart and also seems to put a lot of weight on the celebs appearance. I would prefer a head judge who focused on technique and the quality of the dancing.

awaynboilyurheid · 19/12/2021 09:44

@NashvilleQueen

I don't want Johannes to change. He is giving it his every moment of every dance. I don't think he knows how to ease up. I love watching him. I have seen a growing number of comments in SM about him being too much etc and it makes me sad because I think he's pretty authentic and dance is how he lets himself completely go.
Agree
PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 19/12/2021 09:46

I didn't take that in the same way as you at all — I thought he meant dancing with a man meant he could do more because they are physically stronger than a woman would be. Funny how people interpret things in different ways!

OP posts:
Comefromaway · 19/12/2021 09:51

I took strong as meaning accomplished, not physically strong.

I felt that fir many of the dances it was like Johannes was the female and John the male.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/12/2021 09:53

Home and watched.

For me, the winner was right and even if AJ had participated, I think they’d have still emerged victorious. It is all about the feeling and dare I say the J word.

That said, I ruddy know that Kai and AJ would have blown my socks off with their show dance, if not my drawers. And it is a shame we never got to see it (STRICTLY HONCHOS - that should be the first dance of the new season if you please). If only because my lulu never gets much of an airing…

John’s show dance was better in my opinion - in that it was more showy - but both did well.

I still wish John had been paired with Kai. I love John. Johannes is an amazing hoofer but he outshone John and worse, made John look lumpen and weary sometimes. And I don’t think he is that at all.

If he can’t dial it back to showcase his partner then we will never see his partner truly shine.

I am so pleased for Rose and Joe though. Chuffed with that.

And Anton made me cry and I love Craig. Shurl was shurl.

But for Motsi? It was all over that beautiful face that the result was not what she wanted. And for someone so beautiful she looked fleetingly bloody ugly with that chicken arse mouth on.

I hope next year is all about the dance. I don’t care who dances. Or who with. I just want it to be a happy smiley thread without the snark.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 19/12/2021 09:55

I still can't get over how they just airbrushed Tilly out - she got really far and they couldn't even acknowledge that she couldn't be there and wish her well. Really odd, and not great for her no doubt watching from home.

DontWantTheRivalry · 19/12/2021 09:56

What’s the J word??

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/12/2021 09:57

Ssssh (journey 😉)

maybe they discussed with her and Robert Webb how & whether they wanted to be remembered on the show?
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 19/12/2021 09:58

And airbrushing Tilly and Robert out?

Rude. Bastard rude.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 19/12/2021 10:00

What I loved:

Rose and Gio ladling on the schmalz.

John and Johannes living their best lives.

Claudia's hair being the shiniest shiny thing on a very shiny show.

Janette parading her pins and showing Strictly what it's missing (as the Daily Mail would put it).

And, in general, the whole show being a flurry of glitter in grim times.

Maireas · 19/12/2021 10:01

I agree with Sheldon about John being paired with Kai. Anyway, he did well to get to the final with Johannes, and I thought the rumba was fabulous.
Rose and Gio just seemed to click - he's a good teacher, very sensitive and she's obviously a terrific learner.
It's tricky for the couples to be asked to constantly validate each other and the relationship, maybe that should be dialled down.
However, there was real emotion and I shed a few tears, but it's been a great series, very enjoyable and I have loved all of them, especially the finalists, AJ, Dan, Tilly, Sara - tremendous fun.
Thanks for your company, lovely sparkly friends! Star
