Last thread here.

Well, we care, because we're picky like that!

The Strictly chatter continues...

Now that's how you do a rhumba. James was a great dancer and teacher.

covetingthepreciousthings · 10/10/2021 14:46

@squashyhat
I've just found this article about clapping which explains it a bit -
www.independent.co.uk/life-style/clapping-banned-manchester-university-students-union-jazz-hands-applause-a8566531.html

SmellyOldOwls · 10/10/2021 15:02
@Elderflower14 can you or Wilf answer my question upthread about why the signing for applause is what it is when clapping is a very visual signal whether you can hear or not? Genuine question.
It just is. BSL is a whole language and the sign for applause is part of it.

SequinsandStiIettos · 10/10/2021 15:04

All you Adam fans, were you saying it was unfair when Alex got the Moana rumba with Neil playing the flipping ocean?! Grin or Wiggy Ruth doing a 007 rumba to Diamonds are forever? Or Daisy's early rumba to George Michael?
It is as hard for the bloke as for the woman same as samba is a harder draw but iirc Monkseal's spreadsheets/stats show that neither are the ones you automatically go out on.
Avatar sequel is next year. First one was a while back. Whilst popular, it is still quite niche. I suspect though that Katya saw a chance to get the rumba out the way early leaving Charlestown and couple's choice as arsenal when she really needs them.

SequinsandStiIettos · 10/10/2021 15:05

Charleston even

Thank you @covetingthepreciousthings. That's really interesting. Although I don't understand what makes clapping 'unsafe' Confused.

@SmellyOldOwls fair point. After all, who decided that slapping your hands together is a sign of approval anyway?

SmellyOldOwls · 10/10/2021 15:39

@herecomesthsun

Found this on social media
You just know David's both proud and delighted to have something so easy to mock Grin
SmellyOldOwls · 10/10/2021 15:44

@squashyhat yeah why is anything anything really! With people who are using hearing equipment though say hearing aids for example, they will be finely tuned to maximise noise from the environment for the user. So a sudden burst of very loud noise like clapping could be overwhelming to the deaf person. My son wears cochlear implants and he's very sensitive to noisy environments. For deaf people it's not really that they can't hear anything - almost all will have some access to sound, some will have really good hearing with hearing aids or CIs. It's more about the balance between background noise and speech/useful sounds. You try to limit background noise whereever possible.

Off the top of my head, favourite rumbas:-

 1. Rachel and Vincent - Series 6 (Filth!)
 2. Colin and Erin - Series 3 (Despite the James Blunt)
 3. Katie and Anton - Series 13 (Camp drama and, yes, an Anton rumba)
 4. Kelvin and Oti - Series 17 (More filth!)
 5. Hay and Aliens - Series 13 (Sweet and romantic)

The Kelvin and Oti one makes me laugh cos all I remember is Motsi shouting "OMG THATS MY SISTER!!!" 😂😂
GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 10/10/2021 16:11

@GrouchyKiwi

Cherie and James' rumba is the only one I've liked on SCD. It was beautiful and sexy in the right way.

I came to Strictly after James Jordan left, so I've never seen that one before - but I agree, it was really lovely.

Clawdy · 10/10/2021 16:22

EsmaCannonball just realised what your name means! Ooh, memories of The Rag Trade! Grin

EvilRingahBitch · 10/10/2021 16:23

I do think Katya is playing to win here. That means keeping the crowd pleasing and high scoring dances (and in Adam's case the ones with the big lifts) up your sleeves for later. A spell at the bottom of the leader board early on to build a journey narrative won't do you any harm either.

She's got a hell of a fight on her hands against John, Rose and AJ but I wouldn't write her off.

RainbowWilf996 · 10/10/2021 16:43

@squashyhat the reason why they wave for Rose it because she is deaf she can’t hear clapping that why we wave for her so she know what is happening

RainbowWilf996 · 10/10/2021 16:49

Deaf people have their own way of celebrating that why they does wave so they don’t do clapping

EsmaCannonball · 10/10/2021 16:58

I look nothing like the lovely Esma, though. I'm more of a Joan Sims type, if we're talking Carry On actors. I dream of turning into Margaret Rutherford as I get older. No Jane Fonda or Susan Sarandon for me.

bailarbailar · 10/10/2021 17:05

I loved Georgia and Giovanni's rumba (filth) but often seems I'm alone in that

CaveMum · 10/10/2021 17:33

@StCharlotte yes the Rumba and Cha Cha have a lot of figures that are the same, just danced over a different rate of beats. Think of Cha Cha as a Rumba with an extra few beats - the count being 2, 3, 4 and 1 (the “4 and 1” being the Cha Cha Cha count) as opposed to 2, 3, 4, 1 in the Rumba where the “4, 1” are merged together to produce the slower rhythm.

I dug out my Syllabus books, you can see in the screenshots (Cha Cha has the 29 listed figures, Rumba has 26) that there are a lot of figures that cross-over so to get Cha Cha and Rumba in quick succession on SCD is an advantage as you’ve (hopefully) already learned the basics!

Just watched that again - it was actually very good and the chemistry between them 🔥

They did make a stunning looking couple didn't they? Shame it didn't work out for them!

ChequerBoard · 10/10/2021 18:20

Really looking forward to seeing Ben Platt on tonight's show singing ' You Will be Found' from Dear Evan Hansen.

Camblewick · 10/10/2021 18:33

I normally take a year or two to warm to new professional dancers, but oh my Lordy, Kai is just so fantastic to watch. Can't take my eyes off him. Fine looking chap. 😊

IReallyLikeCrows · 10/10/2021 18:58

I think of the rumba as the Tai Chi of Latin dance in that Tai Chi is a slowed down martial art and rumba seems to be a slowed done and extended faster Latin number. When it's done well I agree that it can be utterly stunning, the problem being that we rarely see it done well on SCD and we know that every year there is at least one celeb who you're thinking from week one "Please don't make us ever see him/her doing a rumba!"
