Having a Netflix binge. I bloody love Edith I'm rooting for her! She's constantly getting hurt and being overlooked by everyone. I know she comes across as bitter and downtrodden but yet she's kind and helpful and supportive. She's the one I'd want as a friend :-)

@JaneJeffer

I'm doing a rewatch. Just finished season 1. I'm still baffled by the Pamuk sex scene. How come neither Mary or Cora were worried that she could be pregnant?
Listen to what he says. It was a way she couldn't get pregnant
JaneJeffer · 24/08/2021 14:13

Yes I've seen it suggested it was anal sex but really?!

drinkingwineoutofamug · 24/08/2021 14:14

Yes birth control back then I suppose 🤷🏻‍♀️
That and lots of foreplay. Virginal sex was just for making babies

JaneJeffer · 24/08/2021 14:16

The whole thing was ridiculous. He practically forced himself on her. I'm sure young ladies would have kept their doors locked at night.

JustJustWhy · 24/08/2021 14:16

Going off the original topic I have to say how much I adore Thomas Barrow. From the beginning you think he's just an evil character but as time went on my heart broke for him and I wanted to be his friend and cuddle him! One of those great actors who can show real pain in his face.

JaneJeffer · 24/08/2021 14:20

Thomas is my favourite.

CassandraCross · 24/08/2021 14:23

Daisy just irritates me - annoying face, annoying voice, annoying behaviour.

Same here, her constant whinging and whining made me want to throttle her.

Kanaloa · 24/08/2021 14:54

@AppleKatie

Mr Bates name was John. (And yes I snigger too).

She does eventually say ‘we have a son John’ but it’s ambiguous about whether or not that’s the baby’s name!

The baby would be little Master Bates.
PrincessScarlett · 24/08/2021 19:35

@JaneJeffer Thomas was my favourite too. On the face of it a nasty piece of work but such hidden depths. I cried when he was accepted by them all after everything.

JaneJeffer · 24/08/2021 20:30

@PrincessScarlett you know I love a villain with hidden depths Grin

PrincessScarlett · 24/08/2021 20:48

@JaneJeffer indeed I do! 🤣

KillingMeDeftly · 24/08/2021 21:29

@3luckystars

I do too!

I think Mary in real life had a tough time so that sadness might not have been all acting. I loved that show.

My favourite person in the whole thing is Mattews mother, I love her character and in my opinion she is the best looking in the whole show. Absolutely gorgeous looking woman, beautiful skin and lovely eyes. I thought Maggie Smith was the star but I saw them interviewed together and realised that it was Mrs. Crawley that sets the whole thing up. I hope I look that good when I’m older.

I am definitely going to start watching it again now after this thread, thank you!

Ah I loved Mrs C too, or Lady M I suppose we should say now. Her autumnal romance with silver fox Lord Merton was lovely.
3luckystars · 24/08/2021 21:45

Mr. Pamuk was the guy from Divergent and I thought he was lovely in Divergent but he was a total skinny creep in downtown abbey! The magic of the screen.

BasiliskStare · 25/08/2021 01:14

At the end I rather loved Mary in that she was happy for Edith to be a Duchess and she was married to a chap who was pretty much going to be running a car show room for a while. (Albeit her son would take over Downton so not like they do not have a roof over their heads )

I hope this is not a spoiler in that it has been on for so long - anyone ask for post to be removed if they think inappropriate.

I never finished Downtown as I gave up after Rose appeared- found her really annoying and a cheap knockoff of Sybil. Is it worth going back to it and persevering?

Yes. Basically even if it's just for the clothes and hair styles
SunbathingDragon · 25/08/2021 10:14

Sybil definitely had the potential to be my favourite but I always wonder how her character would have played out.

Violet was my favourite of all the characters.

KillingMeDeftly · 25/08/2021 10:20

I thought Rose was quite fun and had a decent story arc. She started off as a silly little flapper but her romance with Atticus and her attempts to get his father to accept her were well done. Her mother was a good antidote to Cora's sweetness too. One of my favourite lines is when she's being snide to the Sinderbies and asks if they have trouble getting servants. Lady S replies with "Not particularly. But we're Jewish, so we pay well"!

I think if you’ve got that far I’d persevere to see the end but I always preferred the earlier ones. I do think they tried to ‘replace’ Sybil with Rose and I wasn’t that fond of her.
SylviasMotherSaid · 25/08/2021 10:27

I liked Edith and Mary at different times would love to have read Edith’s magazine ! I enjoyed the storyline with Alfred ,Ivy,Daisy and Jimmy from what I’ve read about big house life that one seemed quite life like . Hated all of the Bates storylines so much needless depression with those two didn’t enjoy the storyline with the fake Patrick or Ethels never ending baby dramas . My favourite character is Isobel I thought she was always true to herself and admired her for having principles even when everyone else disagreed with her .
I thought the movie was a bit strange so will be interested to see what the second one is like , I felt the first film felt like everyone’s voices had been speeded up .

KillingMeDeftly · 25/08/2021 10:27

I didn't think Rose was anything like Sybil tbh! Sybil was great and it's such a shame they killed her off. I guess the actress wanted to go on to bigger and better things, but she's not been in much since, apart from Harlots. Which is also worth watching!

Mummytomylittlegirl · 25/08/2021 10:53

Rewatching this now! I’m pretty sure you can get married at Highclere Castle and I’m devastated I’ve only just got into Downton and missed my chance. Grin

Sybil 100% I was annoyed when she died as everyone else is pretty unlikeable tbh. I hate watching the scene where she dies. Yes she was a ‘nice’ character but she wasn’t boring, she was courageous and I loved that she became a nurse. I do like Rose and they definitely needed her to soften the Mary/ Edith dynamic.

Saying that I would want to be Lady Mary. She always looks flawless and always says the right thing.

Mummytomylittlegirl · 25/08/2021 10:55

Oh and I also can’t stand Anna/ Bates. Poor Anna has had a terrible time. I also find him creepy and think it’s pretty obvious he killed his first wife (unless I’m missing something- I did skip through some of those scenes)

JaneJeffer · 25/08/2021 13:28

I didn't like Bates at all. He has a very sinister undercurrent.

I felt sorry for Edith. She was constantly overlooked and when she was noticed it was usually to put her down especially about her looks. She just wanted someone to love her.

BasiliskStare · 25/08/2021 13:47

I agree re Anna and Bates - just too depressing - loved Isobel and Violet.

( But appreciate that is not answering the question )
