Having a Netflix binge. I bloody love Edith I'm rooting for her! She's constantly getting hurt and being overlooked by everyone. I know she comes across as bitter and downtrodden but yet she's kind and helpful and supportive. She's the one I'd want as a friend :-)

Also agree re Mr Bates. He is punching above his weight with Anna!

I like Mrs Patmore and Mrs Hughes best from the staff I think.

3luckystars · 24/08/2021 08:48

Sybil 100%

Mary is the best looking but can get nasty and is jealous of anyone else getting attention.

3luckystars · 24/08/2021 08:49

Edith doesn’t get a look in.

3luckystars · 24/08/2021 08:50

A bit of a ‘misfortune’ we would call her here.

GlaskinsPerpetual · 24/08/2021 08:50

Mary

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 24/08/2021 08:52

Edith, then Sybil, then Mary.

Bakewellisntjustacake · 24/08/2021 08:55

Sybil and mary.

Edith is a sap, but her baby is very cute and it's sweet she gets her happy ending

longwayoff · 24/08/2021 09:11

Wonderful clothes. It all looks very nice. I think the characterisation is poor but if you want to sink into a toffish fantasy - and why not, when all else is so grim? - it's ideal.

AppleKatie · 24/08/2021 09:20

Ohh yes I also like Rose- I’d like to be her friend. Atticus is good looking too.

Mrs Hughs and Anna are my favourites from downstairs although what Anna sees in bates (other than the obvious craving for daddy/security) is baffling.

boogiewithasuitcase · 24/08/2021 09:21

Edith.

Am I the only one who likes the chauffeur?

3luckystars · 24/08/2021 09:23

I liked him too!!

LoganRoy · 24/08/2021 09:25

I agree I found Anna/Mr Bates repetitive. And didn’t she always say “I love you Mr Bates” and never used his first name! He was never like my name’s Michael ffs. What was his name?!

kazzaD66 · 24/08/2021 09:26

Tom? I rather liked him. Sybil was my favourite sister, so I liked the two of them together. It was a shame the actress wanted to leave, so they killed her off.

rookiemere · 24/08/2021 09:28

Am I the only one who sniggers every time someone says Mister Bates ?

Member589500 · 24/08/2021 09:31

Got bored after the first couple of seasons first time round but am rewatching for the lovely clothes and interiors.
Thomas is my favourite. So hot. So out of his time I want to transport him to a gay bar in Brighton and give him his rightful spotlight Grin

3luckystars · 24/08/2021 09:35

I do too!

I think Mary in real life had a tough time so that sadness might not have been all acting. I loved that show.

My favourite person in the whole thing is Mattews mother, I love her character and in my opinion she is the best looking in the whole show. Absolutely gorgeous looking woman, beautiful skin and lovely eyes. I thought Maggie Smith was the star but I saw them interviewed together and realised that it was Mrs. Crawley that sets the whole thing up. I hope I look that good when I’m older.

I am definitely going to start watching it again now after this thread, thank you!

Mommabear20 · 24/08/2021 09:37

Sybil! Edith is whiny and 'oh poor me!' And Mary is a stuck up bitch 98% of the time, she does have some good one liners though so she's probably my second favourite

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 24/08/2021 09:37

Sybil is my favourite sister.
I love the Violet/ Isabel dynamic

Anothermountain · 24/08/2021 09:39

Meant to.add that I would also be interested to see whether Baxter and Molesley, in "Downton The Future" settle down and live happily ever after Grin

80sMum · 24/08/2021 09:40

It's Edith for me, by a country mile!

He’s a brilliant character. I am only on s3 so I am hoping he’s going to get some kind of romantic storyline at some point instead of just rejected advances from both sides of the class divide. (Please nobody tell me if he doesn’t).
AppleKatie · 24/08/2021 10:08

Mr Bates name was John. (And yes I snigger too).

She does eventually say ‘we have a son John’ but it’s ambiguous about whether or not that’s the baby’s name!

AppleKatie · 24/08/2021 10:09

(Probably both)

Yes she was a great straight "man" to Maggie Smith's character throughout and played her part absolutely brilliantly, representing the "public spirited" middle class. Loved her improvement in status at the end, although Lord Merton's miraculous recovery was a bit dodgy plot-wise!
JaneJeffer · 24/08/2021 13:58

I'm doing a rewatch. Just finished season 1. I'm still baffled by the Pamuk sex scene. How come neither Mary or Cora were worried that she could be pregnant?
