Having a Netflix binge. I bloody love Edith I'm rooting for her! She's constantly getting hurt and being overlooked by everyone. I know she comes across as bitter and downtrodden but yet she's kind and helpful and supportive. She's the one I'd want as a friend :-)

Violet is really the star of the show. I must admit I found myself skipping past most of the Anna and Mr Bates scenes, especially when he was in prison, as they just became tedious. I’m in the minority but I don’t find Matthew hot at all. He’s a drip. Mr Talbot on the other hand? Yes, please.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/08/2021 23:28

None of the men in s3 are hot imo, though I suppose lack of available male talent is true to life for the years after the First World War.
Mary’s evil newspaper magnate aka Ser Jorah was ok.

StarryStarrySocks · 22/08/2021 23:32

Team Edith all the way!

AppleKatie · 22/08/2021 23:34

Sybil was hands down the best in the early series.

Mary and Edith both got better as time went on but for her magnificent arcs in the later series and superior acting Edith wins for the later series.

PrincessScarlett · 22/08/2021 23:45

I hated what a bitch Mary was to Edith. No wonder Edith was so bitter and resentful towards her.

Kanaloa · 23/08/2021 00:21

Yes, Mary I think. She’s a rude cow at times but I found Sybil just soooo good and pure, and Edith annoyed me with what a wet lettuce she was. I always felt like saying ‘come on, why are you letting Mary be a bitch to you.’

Cousin Matthew was a major annoyance. Other than keeping downton in the family I don’t know why anyone wanted to marry him. And he was dead wrong for stringing poor Lavinia along.

Kanaloa · 23/08/2021 00:22

@MiddleParking

Matthew’s hotness is so weird and inconsistent. Sometimes he’s really, ridiculously hot and other times his neck is the exact same width as his face and he looks like an awful rugby boy in a student union.
😂 😂 😂
Kanaloa · 23/08/2021 00:24

Honestly never noticed his neck until right now. Agree as well with all the plotting and melodrama - especially Thomas asking Daisy out when he knew William wanted to ask her. I mean why did he hate William? It made no sense, he was so utterly harmless.

Semi presentable and with a preternatural ability to make people leave you their money, quite undeserved, is enough to make someone a huge catch in Downton land.
Kanaloa · 24/08/2021 01:48

Very true 😂 I suppose Mary had to tot up inheriting along with him against his weak chin and whiny attitude.

Keladrythesaviour · 24/08/2021 01:58

Mary all the way! She's really quite vulnerable and passionate but hides it as a way to protect herself. I think she's a great, strong character.

memberofthewedding · 24/08/2021 02:02

I felt sympathy for Edith because Mary was the golden princess and everyone kowtowed to her. Given a chance Edith turned out to be quite a clever independent woman running her own newspaper and making her own way in the world.

Housewife2010 · 24/08/2021 07:53

I found Mary very wooden and can't stand her fake voice. Sybil and Edith have beautiful voices.

BeenAsFarAsMercyAndGrand · 24/08/2021 08:02

Edith was okay, but I'm not sure I could forgive her writing to tell the Turkish Ambassador about 'poor Pamuk'. Mary was probably my favourite. Loved Sybil's clothes though.

Mr Bates was so annoying! He was meant to be all noble and reserved, but it pissed me off that he refused to ever tell the full truth about anything. He just keeps on being silent while people assume that he's a thief etc. (There are numerous times where he effectively say "You must judge me without me imparting any relevant information at all")

Why? Because it's beneath his dignity to tell the truth and as a weird test for the people he wants to judge him? Fuck that. Twat.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 24/08/2021 08:03

I agree about Mr Bates, I don’t know what people see in him.

It's interesting how we all like different bits! The Bate-Anna storyline was my absolute favourite. I loved both of their characters, and the actors concerned played them so well. I have a soft spot for Brendan Coyle too.

Thomas hated everyone. He was angry with the world, and resented people who were seen as likeable. I always assumed this was because he'd been given a hard time for being gay.
Anothermountain · 24/08/2021 08:10

"Poor Mrs Drew"

Yes. I would love to know, if the series continued, what happened to her. And to see Daisy become a successful farmer.

hollyhocksarenotmessy · 24/08/2021 08:28

Edith, apart from the Mrs Drew thing. That was so cruel, although Mr Drew was an utter bastard for knowing the truth and not sharing it with his wife.

jay55 · 24/08/2021 08:29

I felt for Edith sometimes, given that Mary was everyone's favourite. But then she's get all whiney again and I'd remember why.

rookiemere · 24/08/2021 08:31

I've started rewatching series 6 as it's on TV at the minute and finding Mary ghastly. I can't stand how all the men fall head over heels with her when she just seems to be sniping all the time with this supercilious look on her face.

Edith appears to have so much more depth.

Agree with the Mr Bates character he's so tedious. I'm liking Mosely though for teaching Daisy. What's his name who used to be a chauffeur is annoying too - that's all he ever says when he meets people " do you know I used to be their chauffeur "

Mumoblue · 24/08/2021 08:36

My best friend is just getting into Downton so I’ve been chatting with her about it, I’ve seen it all the way through at least twice!

Sybil in the beginning, she reminds me of my eldest sister.
Edith came off best in the end, I found her to be so wet for much of the show but she found her spine and got better as it went along.

(Might be an unusual opinion but Thomas is my favourite character overall, and obviously everyone loves Violet).

HelloDulling · 24/08/2021 08:36

Team Edith here. Am so glad it’s on Netflix and I can start all over again.

rookiemere · 24/08/2021 08:39

@HelloDulling I didn't realise it was on Netflix I might start from the beginning again as well Smile.

LynseyLoses · 24/08/2021 08:45

I love Mary. I'd love to be her friend, but she'd be too cool for me by far Grin

Edith is a bit annoying and so is Sybille (God rest her soul) imo.

In reality, I'd probably not like any of them IRL, but as a viewer, Mary is definitely my favourite.

I also like Rose, although she is a cousin.
