New thread!

Why would Canada send Serena back to Gilead? They want to prosecute her for war crimes.

@Theredjellybean

Can someone help me with confusion over janines child/children. In the flashback a few episodes ago she was living as a single mum with one child and appeared to be pregnant again. It wasn't clear if she terminated that pregnancy? We know her son was called caleb and was given to a family in southern california but was there a second child?
It showed her getting a termination.

I am pretty sure in June's speech in court she said she was captured in 2017 which makes it 3/4 years.

WorldsBestBoss · 11/08/2021 09:22

@cleocleo16
Yes but she said she had been away for 7 years when she was in the supermarket. It's set in the future.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 11/08/2021 09:42

Gosh, I'd LOVE to see the story board in the writer's room.

All the details of the characters they use to pad them out and make them real, that we don't get to see. And all the links between them.

I'd love for there to be a "making of" documentary. Or a place to visit like Harry Potter world in England. Oh, no, actually, that would be horrible, scrub that.

AlohaMolly · 11/08/2021 09:43

I think she said she went to the Waterford house in 2017, but she’s had a posting before then, which I think would have lasted three years? So posted there in 2014. But how long would ir have taken for her to be trained after capture? Feasibly she could have actually been caught in 2013, a few months to be processed then maybe six months training as a handmaid?

AlohaMolly · 11/08/2021 09:46

June and luke and Hannah had been living in almost-Gilead for a while as well hadn’t they. Smuggling Hannah out was a big deal involving drugging her and then running through the forest, so Gilead must have been on the rise and being implemented for at least a year before that. Slow creep. Remember she had her bank account access given to Luke?

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/08/2021 11:05

@TheCountessofFitzdotterel June has been stuck in Gilead for 7 years. We know that Gilead is quite keen to marry off girls very young and the Handmaids are young too. Esther was only 14. So could easily only have been 6-7 when Gilead started. She along with many other girls wouldn't know anything else. Hannah certainly doesn't know anything else and didn't even recognise June.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 11/08/2021 11:10

I thought Hannah was only about 3 when Luke and June tried to flee at the very beginning.

If it's 7 years later she'll be 10-11. She was still dressed in pink in the box recently - something June was 'happy' about. When they are in white it's time for them to be married off.

Breathmiller · 11/08/2021 12:31

That makes sense timewise gottokeep .

Yes, I'd like to see more of the development of Gilead and what was the final straw that made them decide to leave. I wonder if Moira had already been seized at that point.
AlohaMolly · 11/08/2021 19:51

Was it Moira and June that we saw in the flashback when there was a protest pre Gilead that turned into the police shooting?

I wonder if the rounding up of women and children was done a bit hush hush and it was rumours more than reality that pushed them to go? I can’t imagine June being that calm if Moira had already been taken… but then, if she hadn’t, why wouldn’t Moira have been escaping with them?

If I remember rightly it was moira at the protest with June. When Luke and June were running away with Hannah June said to Luke that they should have left when Moira did and that they had waited too long. His response was that they had to wait for visas as they had a kid to think about. They couldn't just go without one and take their chances like Moira.
WitchSharkadder · 11/08/2021 20:24

There was a conversation about Moira in S1 (Luke's flashback episode) when June & Luke are trying to escape over the border and one of them said 'we should've got out when Moira did' and the other replied 'we couldn't go like that, we have a child etc to consider'.

So, the assumption is that Moira saw the writing on the wall and headed for Canada but then must've been caught en route.

AlohaMolly · 11/08/2021 20:52

Ahh I see! Plus I bet they thought they were safer than Moira because she was a black, single(?) gay woman that had given her baby away. June and Luke were married with a child, June is white. Luke is black but he’s a man, so they’re both in a privileged position while Moira was probably a bit more used to thinking defensively? Especially given what Gilead or whatever they called themselves before were preaching.

With the resurgence of the Taliban in Afghanistan, here is a brutal reminder that there is nothing in The Handmaid's Tale that hasn't happened in real life:

summercupcake · 11/08/2021 22:59

I don’t understand the statement that they only know Gilead. It hasn’t been around for THAT long

I took that to mean the younger handmaids had never been adults in a free country, had relationships of their own, driven cars or had a tertiary education etc. (Not as young as having been born in Gilead)

So probably anyone who was still a dependent child 10 years or younger when Gilead came into existence 7 years ago - would be compliant handmaids now (17ish years old)

I'd forgotten that, thank you.

Please can someone tell me what happens to Janine’s son? And in what series? Complete mind blank

Quitelikeacatslife · 11/08/2021 23:24

Do you think they are moving things along to link up with The Testaments as big ending?

Quitelikeacatslife · 11/08/2021 23:26

I mean in couple of series time, AL get power back and everyone to move on by 14 or so years ??

He died in a car accident, June found out in S3 when she saw some records. Janine doesn't know, she thinks he's in California.
