Anne Boleyn as a black woman

Am anyone explain why ? I know this question raises the issue of race which is highly controversial. It is not meant to be goady.. just perplexed by what they are trying to achieve. To me like playing GHandi and Martin Luther King as while men..

For context I hope my non racial credentials as a mother of mixed race children assist in not seeing this as an 'anti black' thread ... I genuinely would like to be educated as to why this is thought to be a 'good thing' when simply factually incorrect . ? Her home at Hever is less than a mile away, I have never had any idea she was black or mixed race. Just seems a bit 'trendy' ...

I think the question about how people would feel if The Crown cast a black woman as Princess Diana is an interesting one.

the80sweregreat · 31/05/2021 19:27

I've just seen a trailer for this on the one show.
What is the music that is used ?
' I wanna know ' or something is sung ?
It's used a lot on adverts too I think ?

unique1986 · 01/06/2021 19:58

Giving this a go tonight. Dark period drama.

derxa · 01/06/2021 21:29

What a load of old shit.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/06/2021 21:35

A deeply unlikeable Anne I feel. I cannot warn to her at all. She’s coming across as a right snidey barsteward. What were the scriptwriters thinking? We are supposed to care that she is going to die.

And of course we chuck in a lesbian kiss and a hump in the first 20 minutes.

And animal cruelty? Fucking shameful.

I’m afraid derxa that you are right. And it was not unexpected.

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 01/06/2021 21:42

At least you saved me the bother.
@IcedPurple

Yes I do - I wasn't aware of that but I'm pretty certain the other two actors mentioned are white.

And you'll notice that I said that all were good actors and it didn't matter they were playing non white roles.
At that time there were few black actors (and certainly none of the stature required to draw box office crowds) and there wasn't the racial awareness we have today.

I can't see that a white actor would ever get those roles now - and rightly so. There are very good black actors, and many of them, like Idris Elba would be great box office draws.

This casting of a black actress as a white historical figure is totally inappropriate.

However, I'm watching it now, and TBH bad casting is the least of their worries.

Historically inaccurate, awful script, unbelievable portrayals of key figures, boring . . . . The whole caboodle is bliddy awful!

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/06/2021 21:48

sunnydale

Unbelievable. In so many ways.

Tis Tudor Crossroads. No. Worse than that.

Tudor Albion Market. With RHOBH teeth.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/06/2021 21:53

And unnecessary long view of Anne from between her legs.

Naice.

You are right schadey. I shall be polite and concur it is bloody awful.

I’m inclined to echo derxa though with three or four quality swears.

MaMaLa321 · 01/06/2021 21:54

What a load of old shit.
all that needs to be said.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/06/2021 21:56

apporte-moi mon épée

And I’ll save us all two more hours 🤬

(Thank you google translate)

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/06/2021 21:57

It's such a shame - this is a thrilling period in history, and even with the soap opera treatment (The Tudors) it has always been a good rollicking watch - but this is bad.

A good cast wasted on an awful production.

SunnydaleClassProtector99 · 01/06/2021 21:59

Natalie Dormer can rest easy then.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/06/2021 22:02

Natalie Dormer can rest easy then.

That is as maybe.

I’ll bet that Anne Boleyn won’t be.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/06/2021 22:02

Indeed she can Sunny.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/06/2021 22:04

@SheldonesqueTheBstard

And I’ll save us all two more hours 🤬

You could have put SPOILER ALERT before you posted that, Sheldon

The whole thing is ruined now.

Ignoring the question of a black actress playing Anne Boleyn, the fact remains that it was crap IMO. Wooden acting and a completely unnecessary lesbian kiss. I'm fascinated by the Tudors, and the story of Anne Boleyn in particular, but this was bad. DH was asleep in the first five minutes, and I stick with it in between looking at bras on my tablet!

I won't bother with the rest.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 01/06/2021 22:07

je suis très désolé (Cut n paste) schadey

But I put it in French and everything to muddy the waters.

#fail

SchadenfreudePersonified · 01/06/2021 22:38

Nor me, Wine. Normally anything even vaguely historical and I'm there like a rat down a drainpipe, but I'm giving this a miss.

Sheldon - I accept your apology but you can't imagine how disappointed I am that she and Thomas Cromwell didn't ride off into the sunset on a unicorn, blessed by the ghost of Cardinal Wolseley.

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 02/06/2021 00:01

Before or after they got pecked to shreds by wronged peacocks schadey ?

Beaks. Beaks 2. Beaks 3D. Beaks - the revenge.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/06/2021 07:54

I'd like to see it happen during the savage beaking, Sheldon.

Beaks: The Last Battle

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/06/2021 12:08

It's not Mummy, and it is done for various reasons - the main ones being that at one time there were comparatively few actors/actresses of colour, and those that were, weren't "names". (And tbh, looking at the examples, I don't think those recent roles should have gone to white actors.)

I'd be disgusted nowadays if there was (say) a biographical film of Martin Luther King, or Henrietta Lacks, and the leads were given to white individuals, because these are/were real people and there are appropriate actors to fill the roles.

On the other hand, I know that at one time Idris Elba was suggested as a possible James Bond and I would have been more than happy with that - but I wouldn't be OK with a "Jane Bond" (which I think was an idea at one time). (To my mind it was just something I couldn't get behind, though doubtless many people could.) I think that there are some liberties you can take with a character and some you can't. For some characters the race/colour/creed is integral to the part - for others it doesn't matter and you can cast anyone with talent.

IntermittentParps · 02/06/2021 13:29

Schadenfreude (and I'm sorry all; derail), I'm interested to hear why you wouldn't be OK with a female Bond? (hope that doesn't sound snarky; it's a genuine question!)

GruntingAntelope · 02/06/2021 15:10

The idea that a king could marry a black woman and nobody would think anything of it totally distorts the history, so unless they're going for a totally fantastical interpretation of the period it makes a nonsense of the whole thing

I do agree with this. At the end of the day the experiences of a black woman compared to a white woman during this time period would have been very different.

It may not be a documentary no but I think if you're making a drama series about a particular time period, especially when the character was a real historical figure, there should be some effort made to keep some realism to it.
