Couldn't see a thread yet.. maybe it's too early.. but needed to talk to people about Strictly with the news today that Zoe Ball and Ian Waite are leaving ITT!

Will Rylan take over full time? Who will become the resident dance expert?

Also, has anyone else seen the clips of AJ and Curtis on Hollyoaks? Grin I do wonder if he regrets quitting Strictly.. I'm
not sure acting is his forte.

Ooh yes. Good shout evie (evil sounds, well, evil) Wink
Funnily enough, I was rewatching that recently cos of the David Bowie thread. Then I ended up watching the favourite again then I ended up drooling over Andrew Scott in the pursuit of love.
You're welcome was once used in DWTS but not even with a bulky John Cena-type dude, twas little Jordan.

Ah bless you kiwi I miss Monkseal but stalk him on twitter. His recent spreadsheets show this is the youngest cast. Moira Rainbow wig brings back memories, both Moira Ross and Louise Rainbow are gone.

I don't know whether BBC has easier access to songs than in the US which struggles with permissions. Or when they start their planning, pros, slebs, combinations. Must all be quite tight.
There are also the obvious difficulties with routines - is it appropriation if a white sleb takes a movie character that was played by a BAME actor.
In the case of Black Panther, the first black superhero; absobloodylutely, you couldn't consider it.
Do you typecast if you ask Nancy to do Mulan or Jojo to do Agent J? Would a Bollywood routine lessen Nina's chances with the voting middle Englanders?
Do you stick with colourblind casting? e.g. Oti doing a fantastic Belle in musicals week, Normani doing a wonderful Mulan on DWTS?
Then of course, you have Dave having to fit things to 1 minute 20 or whatever AND a balance of styles AND make up/props/costuming decisions AND sleb and pros' preferences and requests.
It must be really, really difficult to do. I am never sure how much time is invested pre-series in choreo or whether it kicks in once they are told who they are with (I do not believe they aren't told, colour me cynical).
God, I would love MNHQ to get an AMA with Sarah James...

@GingerAndTheBiscuits

With Anton on the panel I wouldn’t count on sane marking.
He was OK last year - considerably more sane than Motsi.
SequinsandStiIettos · 16/08/2021 00:38

Agreed, Anton won't be doing Donny tens or Alfonso levels of enthusiasm, most you can say is that he might err on the side of generous for Latin, especially cha cha cha.
I think he'll be fine but there's still a hardcore who see him as old school/unfunny/even creepy was said btl on the Guardian (have they never seen Bruno?!)

lynsey91 · 16/08/2021 08:14

@GingerAndTheBiscuits

His marking was fine when he judged last year.

At least he makes sane and sensible comments unlike the shrieker that is Motsi. How a dancer makes such inane comments with little or no reference to actual dancing I don't know.

Terhou · 16/08/2021 09:46

I couldn't agree more about Motsi. Both she and Shirley need to be told to tone down the wild enthusiasm and standing ovations, judges are supposed to be reasonably neutral.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 16/08/2021 13:52

I suppose I find Anton a bit too nice. Not creepy at all but just not critical even when the criticism is deserved. And yes to standing ovations, should be reserved for exceptionally rare occasions and loses all meaning when it starts happening in week 3 Hmm

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 16/08/2021 18:48

I don't know if his judging last series was necessarily representative though. It must have been a bit awkward being "promoted" from the pro pool then sent back there after two weeks. Doing a full series as a judge will probably be better.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 16/08/2021 18:51

I hope so. I don’t know who I’m kidding anyway. I just fast forward to Craig’s judging and the scores and then the next dance and skip everything in between Grin

ppeatfruit · 17/08/2021 08:41

TBH although I quite like Craig when he's not doing his deliberately mean act! He can sometimes be unneccesarily unpleasant.

I blame the producers who seem to want a pantomimic show with huge exaggerations in all things; the shrieking and sexism being a good example (aiming at the idiotic yoof among us )

Terhou · 17/08/2021 08:46

I had the impression that Anton was to an extent aiming to model himself on Len, and if he does that, he'll be fine.

ppeatfruit · 17/08/2021 08:52

Yes I liked Len Terhou he was a good mix of proper constructive help\criticism and a cockney humour I miss him.

EvilRingahBitch · 17/08/2021 09:11

Len definitely went downhill over time as he increasingly played to the crowds and the jet lag started to get to him. And I’ve never really forgiven him for his stance in the Gough/Jackson series and being such a bastard to Kelly when her father died. But on his day he was a genuinely useful judge.

ppeatfruit · 17/08/2021 09:22

I liked the way he took the pee out of Bruno's weirdnesses. He was probably too old to carry on with the jetting about (it must be difficult for anybody). Absent mindedness can affect everyone.

That TV programme with him trying the ' unusual' foods that most of us eat all the time like pasta and curry Grin was quite illuminating.

AuntLydiasNewHairdo · 17/08/2021 11:23

And Len was really awful to Will Young. I was quite taken aback by that. Tetchy old sod.

callmeadoctor · 19/08/2021 07:54

Will Young is a bit pathetic though (and yes I do know he pleaded his mental health etc). Im sure if you are a big celeb then you really don't like getting told off by the judges....................................

ppeatfruit · 19/08/2021 08:26

Funny, I wonder if he'd ever WATCHED Strictly Grin callme

They shouldn't happen at all IMO. It's immensely demoralising for everyone else.
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 20/08/2021 10:35

Likewise with the premature tens.

If someone is getting 9s or 10s in the first few weeks, then they’ve got more ringerage than a bell.

It puts me right off.

ppeatfruit · 20/08/2021 15:41

Yes Sheldon but it must be tricky if there are a load of numpties and a few ringers, the judges do sometimes say they're being picky because the person is obviously good\ringerish. But like you I reckon they don't say it enough.

Anyhow I'm off to your side of the Channel tomorrow and off line for approx month. Bye everyone, I wonder when it's going to start?

SheldonesqueTheBstard · 20/08/2021 15:54

Well seeing as how you are popping off line, I think it would be polite of them not to start until you are back Grin

I do think Anton erred on the side of generous scores last time, since it was a guest spot. I do think that this year he will score appropriately. He will also give great constructive criticism.
EvilRingahBitch · 20/08/2021 16:24

Launch show is recorded 11th September but they normally don’t show it live, so perhaps the 18th? First live show is 25th September.

I agree with the poster who said that was probably because he was only a guest judge.

I think he will give constructive criticism if he feels it is needed. He won't be nasty for the sake of it.

I am looking forward to seeing how his judging goes. I think the celebs and dancers sometimes need some advice and constructive criticism rather than gushing praise or inane comments that don't help at all

EsmaCannonball · 21/08/2021 18:28

Has anyone listened to Oti interview Karen and Johannes on her podcast? It's quite interesting hearing the pros being interviewed in a non- It Takes Two way.
