Strictly 2021!

Couldn't see a thread yet.. maybe it's too early.. but needed to talk to people about Strictly with the news today that Zoe Ball and Ian Waite are leaving ITT!

Will Rylan take over full time? Who will become the resident dance expert?

Also, has anyone else seen the clips of AJ and Curtis on Hollyoaks? Grin I do wonder if he regrets quitting Strictly.. I'm
not sure acting is his forte.

I think you're unusual then. They purposefully go to different markets to draw very different people into watching strictly, people into YouTube, people into soaps, people into reality TV, people into music, people into sports, young people, older people. You'd be quite unusual if you fitted into all those categories.

Sparklingbrook · 09/08/2021 10:07

I have never been called 'unusual' before. Grin Maybe I know more about people in the public eye than is the norm.
Which is why I am surprised that this year I'm drawing a blank. Generally I know who they are and have one to back, and also be itching to know if they're doing the tour so I can get my tickets booked up.

I woul love it if the whole Kemp family turned up. See who does best. I saw Martin in Waitrose once and he is so handsome. I love Roman and their relationship is lovely. Shirley is less keen in limelight but I reckon she can dance.

SunSeaSurfGin · 09/08/2021 10:23

Jenna Davies from Dragons Den has been announced

I think she might do ok. Reckon she has a good work ethic & have a competitive streak

That would be awesome

That would be more like it!

I am beginning to think there are high profile people that must get asked year after year but decline every time.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/08/2021 10:41

Frank Skinner has mentioned that he’s been asked a couple of times but turned it down

AlecTrevelyan006 · 09/08/2021 10:45

David Baddiel also turned it down a few years ago

Sparklingbrook · 09/08/2021 10:49

I would imagine Ben Shepherd turns it down every year and maybe Davina McCall.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/08/2021 11:05

I'm on 4/6 this year (5 if you count seeing AJ on The Wheel just before she was announced).

I wonder whether Susie Dent has ever been asked? We've had Carol Vorderman and Rachel Riley.

Terhou · 09/08/2021 12:53

I think Sara Davies could be quite good. Maybe Deborah Meaden recommended it to her.

It looks as if comedians are deciding that it's a cool thing to do since Bill Bailey won. Maybe Frank Skinner will reconsider.

BoreOfWhabylon · 09/08/2021 13:56

I do hope Jackie Weaver will be in it.

Tyredofallthis1 · 09/08/2021 15:10

I hope Robert Webb takes it seriously like Bill Bailey. I'm fairly certain that Bill wasn't the best dancer, but I really loved watching him. And I loved that he looked like he was having the time of his life. When he tangoed to Enter Sandman, he looked like all his dreams had come true!

ChessieFL · 09/08/2021 15:34

Ian Hislop and Paul Merton once said on HIGNFY that they both get asked every year and say no.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/08/2021 15:42

Bill Bailey is very musical, which is always helpful.

ppeatfruit · 09/08/2021 16:42

Hello Sparkling nice to hear from you. Grin.

I don't reckon that Frank Skinner has the stamina. I like him but he mentioned about his bad shoulder on R.101.
Though I must admit that I was surprised about how good BB was last year.
About Robert, I had just turned over to the One Show last week and there was a man/woman dancing very well in quite a revealing leotard. It turned out to be him! I nearly fell off my chair! I think it had been a sketch from the Children in Need show!! I'm not sure.

EsmaCannonball · 09/08/2021 17:05

It was always the case that there would be a couple of people on Strictly whom I'd never heard of, but for the last two years (and so far this year) it's been half the line-up. We're not stupid enough to expect A-listers but we do know the show can attract household names and so it's underwhelming when they don't. The premise of the show isn't getting to know not very famous people better, it was always about seeing people who were already famous in one context in a completely different context. For me, if the show doesn't have that element of seeing that famous rugby player really learn to dance or discovering that that very familiar newsreader is a secret hoofer, then it just lacks a bit of magic. If you don't already know somebody then they can't really surprise you.

SequinsandStiIettos · 09/08/2021 17:07

It was Let's Dance for Comic Relief from 12 years ago.
I have heard of Sara as I watch Dragons Den.
I have recognised 4/6 so far with a bit of help from the Wheel
They had the furore with Seann Walsh but then Chris Ramsey paved the way for Bill Bailey. Oh and Susan Calman had had a background in stand-up too, hadn't she?
I wonder if Ed Byrne gets asked each year (he did Celeb Home Baker).
Which reminds me, I would have preferred Tom Read-Wilson over John Whaite but only cos I found him endearing and enchanting on the Home Baker show and could have seen him in top hat and tails.

ppeatfruit · 09/08/2021 17:13

Thank you Sequins let's hope he's got the guts to dance like that THIS year!

I Love Susan Calman, especially since she did Strictly, she's such a sweet natured person. (that's how she comes across anyway).

Terhou · 09/08/2021 17:48

There's bound to be at least one footie player and/or Olympian to come.

SequinsandStiIettos · 09/08/2021 17:55

He had a heart op so I want him to do well and use it to stay fit but to also go easy. So I don't want him with Oti or Karen. I'd much prefer he was with Amy thinking about it. She has health issues of her own so she gets it and will push him while treating him gently.

Piggywaspushed · 09/08/2021 18:57

My DH had that exact same heart op. Robert W will be fine. He was told not to play football or cricket really again (more because they were worried about a ball in the chest) but he plays golf and would run if it weren't for his dodgy knee.

covetingthepreciousthings · 09/08/2021 19:02

Has anyone danced wearing glasses? I've just seen that Tom Fletcher has ditched the specs in favour of contact lenses. I know the army man last year (can't remember his name? Also ditched his glasses). Is it possible to dance in glasses or is it best to switch to contacts?

OP posts:
SequinsandStiIettos · 09/08/2021 19:53

Dennis Taylor danced with glasses
Su Pollard did the Xmas special with holly-trimmed red specs

I would think it possible - Sue Perkins, who I always hope would do it, would be interesting. I love her in glasses but she has a profile photo on twitter without. I am not great without mine but hate contacts. Could imagine my glasses falling off tbh though so would probably go without and have everything in soft focus!
