So was that "jade's" real boyfriend or brother then ?

bizzey · 15/08/2021 00:18

Or flatmate ?

purpleme12 · 15/08/2021 00:30

I don't know I just know someone made that comment about the little boy being Noel's son

LavenderAskew · 15/08/2021 09:28

I'd forgotten how horrible and self-centred Cal was. Don't think he sounds different.

Also are we supposed to believe all this happened and didn't get mentioned again - I mean did Jade ever refer to it to Iain that she and he had crossed paths? Also what's the chance Etan would have "forgotten" such an error instead of having anx about it forever!!

Least they recalled that David isn't supposed to be a wanker.

Loved, loved LOVED having Big Mac and Noel back.

Terhou · 15/08/2021 10:23

I wonder if they're ever going to have a replacement receptionist as a central character again? ISTR that Noel's predecessors were also pretty central.

spiderlight · 15/08/2021 11:19

Poor Ethan is going to have a horrible time with that new consultant - nasty piece of work! And why didn't the nurse who was bagging the patient while he was talking to her sister notice the low sats and call him back in? All a bit implausible and shoehorned in to allow this new storyline.

I loved having Big Mac and Noel back though. They were such a great double-act.

purpleme12 · 15/08/2021 11:21

Yes I love them too
Miss them 😢

Optimist1 · 15/08/2021 11:22

Noel and Big Mac certainly made up for the nonsense in the rest of the episode.

Ethan was a wimp at the best of times - now he's a bereaved wimp at the mercy of a vengeful consultant. It'll all end in tears.

purpleme12 · 15/08/2021 11:32

Yes that's what I said upthread

unvillage · 15/08/2021 13:40

God I loved Cal. Great to see him again if briefly. Agreed that he didn't quite have the Cal voice down though.

Stevie seems fun.

Thought the scenes with Paul (was that his name?) were dreadful - just a character with no redeeming features whatsoever, it seemed so ridiculous that Robyn would even give him the time of day.

LIZS · 15/08/2021 13:46

Not sure it was anniversary worthy though. It seemed like two regular episodes cobbled together. What happened to the nurse who was supposed to be bagging the sister and presumably watching the monitor?

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 15/08/2021 13:53

Why was there not more fuss about the catfishing outcome? The guy asking women for money - surely that's one for the police?

LavenderAskew · 15/08/2021 14:27

I presume she saw then altered Cal who was also in the room.

Though Cal asked how long, and Etan said a "few seconds". Which doesn't fit with that despite it being more likely than the nurse walked off and Cal noticed despite having his own patient

I didn't like Cal ever!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/08/2021 15:28

I found the whole thing very weird. Why did Robyn set up a dating profile for Charlie but not tell him about it? What’s the point of that? And she seemed to know that vile boyfriend was using it for shady purposes but wasn’t that bothered…until she was? And how exactly was he getting money out of them anyway? Did he just say: I need £100 and they were like - well, I’ve never met you but fine here you go I’ll leave it under a shrub?

It seemed very disjointed too - not well edited.

Stevie seems tediously unpleasant and Fenisha’s ex continues to mope around the place like some kind of victim even though he basically killed her with his shit driving.

It was a season opener, fgs! It’s made me very grumpy by being so shit 😂

purpleme12 · 15/08/2021 17:52

I was very disappointed in Robin

Fluffmonkey82 · 15/08/2021 19:20

Yeah agree it was a bit bonkers and not liking Iain's haircut.

GCrebel · 15/08/2021 19:35

I found it annoying. As PP said, disjointed and the writers have clearly forgotten how the characters would actually behave.

Robyn - wouldn't get involved in the catfishing nonsense. She is a widow herself and would have more sensitivity.

Ian / Jade / Ethan story from 5 years ago wasnt believable.

Ethan looked to have a perfectly good view of Emma's throat when he was intubating her and would have a) hit home and b) checked her air entry afterwards. It's not credible that he would have forgotten to do that just for the sake of a new story line.

Gahhhhh

unvillage · 16/08/2021 01:07

"That nurse" who helped Ethan intubate was Tasch, who has been in the show for about 20 years as an uncredited extra, along with other nurses like Sue and Kojo. At this point they should have an episode to themselves!

Another point - wasn't the Peace Garden built as a memorial to Cal? There'd been a nice little green thing in that area for a while but I don't think it was ever named before Cal's death, and I'm sure they expanded on it after he died (because he literally died there) so why would Noel have seen Henrik Hanssen there?

unvillage · 16/08/2021 01:17

Paramedic/ambulance tech must be the worst possible career choice in Holby for the amount of fatalities there are. In my memory there's been Fin, Woody, Curtis, Polly, Jeffrey, Sam, and now Lev and Fenisha - just must be a far higher death rate than the other professions!

Mumdiva99 · 16/08/2021 07:53

I really enjoyed the episode. I thought it went back to the old days and also set up a good new storyline.

Yes it was 2 episodes broadcast together....so what. I was pleased when it got to the end of 1 that another started....

Loved seeing Noel and Big Mac again and Jade before she started. It made me happy to watch.

Terhou · 16/08/2021 09:51

Are we supposed to think that Ethan's been harbouring a secret guilt about Emma for the last five years? It would be a trifle odd given that he doesn't seem bothered about the fact that he deliberately left Scott whatsit to die.

purpleme12 · 16/08/2021 10:08

I don't think he's been harbouring the guilt for years
I think it was just giving the explanation for Stevie's revenge mission
But I'm sure he will feel guilty when it comes up again

Antiquestuff · 16/08/2021 10:13

@unvillage I’m not sure the peace garden was a memorial to anyone, I thought it just appeared as part of that major revamp (when they moved filming to another location maybe?)

Maybe there’s a memorial to Cal in there though? I’m sure there are for other characters.

LavenderAskew · 16/08/2021 10:38

I was just checking out if I could find anything about the peace garden (because I think the same as @Antiquestuff that the Peace Garden was created for people to have a quite spot and that the memorial was placed there for Cal). Also I'm supposed to be studying and I am looking for any reason to procrastinate.

Anyway, in doing do I saw an (admittedly old) article that Holby City was ending. Now I've never watch Holby - cross over episodes excepted - but i had no idea it had been going for 23 years!

Back to the Peace Garden, I came across this in Emergency department in the Holby Wiki under "Remodelling".

... The next major renovation of the department came in December 2011 when a fire broke out, which resulted in the destruction of the majority of the building. (CAS: "Next of Kin - Part Two") It was officially opened around a month later following extensive building work and repairs. The remodelling encompassed new CT scanning rooms and a peace garden outside.

The ED was renovated over the Christmas period of 2013, but this primarily consisted of minor remodelling of the reception area. Resus was also moved with this refurbishment, as well as a new layout of various other areas being introduced. (CAS: "Between the Cracks") Towards the end of 2015, building work took place to replace the peace garden with a paved area. Since then, it's been used for small food and drink carts. ...

I don't recall the fire!! I mean I knew my memory was bad but I'd have through it might ring a bell.
