Crime Drama starring Kate Winslet

9pm Monday 19th April Sky Atlantic

I'm so looking forward to another dark drama.

PLAYING Richard, not 'laying' Richard Blush

GlassBoxSpectacular · 25/05/2021 09:37

Frankly though the biggest surprise of the episode was Mare getting the badge back. It lost a lot of gritty credibility there and became another cop show (although maybe it’s an accurate representation of how the US police works. Line of Duty it wasn’t!).

Yep. I know it had to happen for plot development, but she's stolen evidence and planted it on someone for her own ends, attacked a man with dementia in his own home for no reason, and carried out police work while suspended that resulted in the death of an officer.

Hey, Mare, want your job back, as if literally nothing happened? Hmm

TheBobJog · 25/05/2021 09:37

Not sure about Richard and also don't know where Dylan fits in now. At the beginning we were clearly supposed to think he was a bit of a stoner, under the shadow of a cocky, possessive girlfriend but clearly now he's a Bad 'Un. But what is going on?!

Yeah bit of a let down there, it's been pretty flawless so far

Haven't contributed to this thread yet but am obsessed with this series. I'll be bereft next week when it has ended.

There was a point in yesterday's episode where I thought Siobhan was the killer. She seemed almost threatening when it turned out that her girlfriend considered their relationship to be more casual than she had thought. Made me wonder if Siobhan and Erin had been more than friends at some point. Then, finding out that Siobhan had been the one to find Kevin, made me wonder if she had actually killed him and made it look like suicide. There was a lot of emphasis on Mare not having been in the attic since that day and I wondered if there would be a huge clue up there. After Siobhan's drunken breakdown though (which was another amazingly well acted scene), my thoughts were reversed; throughout the series there have been so many references to Siobhan being the strong one and nobody asking her about her feelings and the consequences of that were undone in this episode. Her reaction to the girlfriend was because she can't stand to be unimportant again and her harsh words to Mare were due to having not been listened to and having carried the burden of finding her brother.

There is so much to tie up in one episode next week and I don't know if this means that comparatively little time will be spent on the killer's identity and therefore it is really obvious now that it is John so that will just be followed through. I just can't help thinking there will be another twist though and I'm still suspicious about Guy Pearce. I know that he was drafted in last minute to replace a less well known actor but that still doesn't explain why the character seems to be pointless filler, plus the "asked a mate to step in" seems like a great cover story for everyone wondering why a well known actor would play such a minor character.

KatherineJaneway · 25/05/2021 11:02

I'm still suspicious about Guy Pearce

Apart from John, he is the other person I think might be the killer.

I have to say the acting in this series has been amazing. If this was a film, Kate deserves an Oscar for her performance.

The farting shoes is a genius moment Grin

Etsylicious · 25/05/2021 11:19

I think the Guy Pearce character does give depth to Mare tho. She’s not just a cliche...

MummytoCSJH · 25/05/2021 11:51

I'm just getting round to watching now - at Mare with therapist - my dad died in that exact same way in the attic too, I wish there had been a warning :(

MummytoCSJH · 25/05/2021 11:53

I could guess from what was said, it was just a bit of a kick in the gut to see it really

SydneyCarton · 25/05/2021 12:09

I think Richard is there to show that Mare can't, or won't, let herself have some happiness in her personal life because she feels she doesn't deserve it and she's too busy trying to look after everyone else in her life. Hopefully she'll unbend a bit more toward him at the end.

I'd like it to end with Siobhan moving out to go to Berkeley and Carrie moving in so she can spend more time with Drew and not have to work all hours to pay the rent, but I don't think they've reconciled that much! I wonder if she'll tell Mare about the near miss in the bath?

DouzePoints · 25/05/2021 12:31

MummytoCSJH Flowers I'm sorry you had to go through that. I agree there should have been a warning and was thinking of a friend who found her brother in the same way. I know she doesn't watch this though.

I should also clarify in my previous post, I meant to say that the circumstances of Kevin's death also made it obvious to me that my Siobhan theory was wrong. Until that moment I had assumed in was an overdose which she could have engineered but it because painfully clear that only he was responsible.

I agree that KW deserves every acting award for this. She has been astonishing but to be honest the rest of the cast have also done extremely well - particularly the young and less experienced actors for holding their own against her tour de force.

Kona84 · 25/05/2021 13:22

Maybe Guy is gonna be around if there is a season 2 maybe he’s a very slow burner

Battytwatty · 25/05/2021 13:28

I’m pretty sure there was a warning at the beginning saying the programme contain upsetting scenes

Sowhatywhaty · 25/05/2021 18:18

How old is Ryan - John & Lori's son? I wonder if John is protecting him & that was the secret they are keeping.

Clawdy · 25/05/2021 22:30

That bath scene was incredibly tense and upsetting. And that little boy is such a good actor!

spagbog5 · 25/05/2021 22:43

@Sowhatywhaty
I thought exactly the same thing !
Dh thinks I'm mad but something is off after he attacked the boy at school etc.

southeastdweller · 25/05/2021 22:52

Yeah, last week I said similarly about Ryan - he knows what's going on, that's why he acted up. John didn't sleep with Sandra, he slept with (abused?) Erin. If Ryan really was upset and angry about John cheating on Lori with Sandra, we would have seen Sandra by now because that works dramatically, but we haven't.

Bumzoo · 26/05/2021 01:43

I think Billy gets black out drunk and woke up covered in blood and assumed he's done it

What was in the photo when the police chief said get Mare on the phone. Now.

PinkSatinMoon · 26/05/2021 03:41

I believe John did it and has conned Billy into believing he did it, as someone upthread mentioned, it was the Stag Do, and everyone was blind drunk. John gave Mare's Ex an alibi but what he did was actually give himself an alibi. The alibi is fake. John is the Father if the baby and the killer. Grin

Dylan is forcing young desperate teens to use that Online App and taking their money/a cut, I think.. not sure what else it could be Hmm

KillingMeDeftly · 26/05/2021 07:13

That scene 😱😱
wonderstuff · 26/05/2021 07:16

Watched most recent episode last night. Wow. I felt the John & Billy relationship felt quite 'Of Mice and Men', clearly distracting him to kill him, is that out of kindness or to disguise John's guilt. We haven't seen much of Billy..
I think Guy Pearce is there to develop over the next series maybe. Dylan clearly an awful person, but what has he done?

Every episode seems to get better. When is the last one on?

southeastdweller · 26/05/2021 08:52

Last one next Monday.

ShallWeStartTheMeeting · 27/05/2021 09:23

I had to forward the bath scene, I was so convinced little Drew was going to die. Does that mean Carrie is using again? The way she suddenly drifted off mid-bath was very off.
Incidentally actress looks a lot more like her mum (Kyra Sedgwick) than her dad!

I'm so intrigued by the photo- as someone mentioned before- what is Dylan up to?
Speaking of Dylan has anyone seen the Society? (Teen show on Netflix) the actor played such a lovely character in it. It's so jarring to see him as evil Dylan. Grin

Finally the scene between Siobhan and Mare had me in tears. Poor Siobhan having to carry the weight of her brother's death and having to be the responsible one...

Sssloou · 27/05/2021 09:39

What’s happened to Mare’s ex husbands new fiancé? Why did she leave him? Any chance Mare will get back with him?

So although it’s honing down on John/Billy or Dylan or the Deacon (have we decided he’s not in the running?) will any of the other random stuff ever get explained eg the graffiti and video erasing?

ShallWeStartTheMeeting · 27/05/2021 10:19

Frank's fiancée went to stay with her mother.
I guess she found Mare accusing him of being the father of Erin's baby difficult to deal with... Grin
