Anyone else watch this?

Presenter Katherine Ryan was UNBELIEVABLY irritating.

The bespoke thing is a bit of a hostage to fortune, I'd have thought. What if the person who's ordered it ends up choosing the "wrong" one? The recipient would get quite pissed off if they watch the show and realise they actually like one of the other entries much more than whatever they received.

Nith · 21/04/2021 00:27

I did get the distinct impression that they had it in for Kim for some reason. I thought her chain in the first round was actually one of the nicest.

Ellmau · 21/04/2021 00:39

It was very pretty, but they implied it wasn't technically as good as some of the others?

Solange is definitely a bit scary.

I haven’t watched tonight’s but agree with everything about last weeks being cold and a bit soulless.

I adored the pottery throw down and for anyone else who lives keith go and watch the videos he has up on his YouTube channel. The adverts he’s done for his homewards range are absolutely bloody genius. Him and Noel fielding are a total delight

Oh bollocks typos left right and centre... sorry ^^

I think KR was slightly better as more relaxed thie evening but I feel she has latched on to Tamara as needing special encouragement for some reason. When they were chatting I thought Tamara was desperately trying to be polite and not say I'm OK, just let me get on. I think it is actually undermining to tell someone you notice lack of confidence or nerves. Reminds me when I had interviews and the interviewers would insist on telling me I appeared nervous. Why? What use is that?

lollipoprainbow · 21/04/2021 08:05

I didn't mind KR this week actually she was faintly amusing. She was spot on with the Prince Harry comments !!

MotherOfGodWeeFella · 21/04/2021 08:57

I disagree - having a red beard and reddish blond hair doesn't make him a lookalike for Prince Harry. He was nothing like him.

Blackopal · 21/04/2021 09:20

I am watching later but enjoyed your comments.
Someone mentioned KR latching onto Tamara, I thought that in the last episode! When she tried to tell her to be confident like Boris would be I thought Tamara looked mortified and it was quite patronising.

The series is filmed in my old university and I have used that bench space myself, makes ne nostalgic seeing it!

JemimaTab · 21/04/2021 11:22

Katherine seems to put some of the contestants on edge a bit, which is not helping. And the man seemed embarrassed by the Prince Harry joke (he really didn’t look anything like him, ginger beard aside).
I really liked Hugo’s brooch. And there was a little bit more explanation about the processes etc. this week, which was good.

MoltenLasagne · 21/04/2021 12:02

Did they reuse the exact same video clips on the contestants? I definitely felt like I'd seen them all before.

CheerfulBunny · 21/04/2021 15:21

@Nith I completely agree. I just think they didn't like her designs whereas they're full of praise for the girl who makes the architectural pieces, even when the brief wasn't fulfilled. They praised her for making jewellery that reflected her own style but criticised Kim for the same thing!

adrianmolesmole · 21/04/2021 15:37

Most of the complaints seem to be about Solange and while she is dull I find the male judge downright terrifying! He's got such a stern and angry face, it's completely unnecessary, it's supposed to be a fun show, not an exam!

I really like Scott's(?) chain with the gold solder showing and Hugo's brooch. I'd like to see more detail on techniques, jewellery making is not a subject that's that well known and I was hoping to learn more from the show, but I don't think that's going to happen.

inappropriateraspberry · 21/04/2021 17:10

Hopefully as the contestants get fewer, they will have more time to spend in techniques and the actual jewellery.

Kingdombythesea · 21/04/2021 17:56

It’s a tricky one because nobody wants a super talented artist like Solange to be going all jazz hands and cheesy grins in her professional capacity. But seems like a mad choice.
It would be great if her input outshone her grumpiness, but it doesn’t seem to. She’s reserved with her knowledge and seems to be bored by the contestants. Interesting seeing the contrast between her grinning social media posts stating how much she enjoyed filming, and the episodes where it’s really quite hard to watch her awkwardness.

Anonmousse · 21/04/2021 18:18

NC because I make jewellery as my job. I only watched half the first episode and didnt find it all that enjoyable. However I would absolutely hate to start making something with all brand new tools at a bench I dont normally sit at, with a torch completely different to my own one....with an almost impossible time limit! Most jewellers would feel bereft not having their own set of tools.
A lot of decent pieces would be physically impossible to make and finish in the timescale given. Yesterday a colleague , who is very experienced, and works quickly, took 6 hours to make a ring. And that didnt include setting stones in it, or polishing it, but it will look amazing when finished.
But I guess that's no different to bake off for example when they are given very tight time scales. I always think it's quite mean when Paul Hollywood says, this will be very difficult to achieve in the time given, because it's like thay are setting them up to fail. But I generally love bake off.
In some ways it's quite lazy tv. The template is literally the same, almost down to the script for pottery show down, bake off, sewing bee etc.

Ellmau · 21/04/2021 18:53

I think they missed a trick with the jeweller of the week.

They could have had something puntastic like Diamond of the Day or something.

I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling with this. I wanted to love this programme and I'm really not enjoying it.

What on earth was KR thinking with the straight white man and paternity jokes?!

Also agree that there isn't enough explanation of what they're doing. Or enough time for them to produce something that's been finished to a high standard.

I'm giving it another episode but I'm not sure I'll carry on to the end.

Chrysanthemum5 · 21/04/2021 21:16

@Kingdombythesea exactly Solange just seems bored by the work of the contestants. Occasionally she will show an interest and it's like a different person has entered the room! Either they've edited it to only show her being dull or she really was only occasionally interested

adrianmolesmole · 21/04/2021 22:41

Just watched Sewing Bee and it's so good! Cheerful, funny, and they really explained all the techniques and used it to build the tension in whether they got the details right. I love jewellery making so can't help wishing ATG was more like that. I hope they make another series and totally reimagine it with new judges and a new presenter. I like Joe Lycett too.

Excilente · 22/04/2021 09:57

i dont mind KR, but she is a bit too cutting/abrasive as a presenter.. Solange is just... cold.

I think the male judge warmed up a bit this week, i certainly think he has the potential to be nicer, but its lost against Solanges strict demeanour.

I thought Hugo's brooch would win, it was the standout one of the lot.

But yes, i wish they'd stop being so strict on the times. One of these times, i'd love the judges on Sewing Bee and Glitters to muck in and see what they could do in that time.

EsmaCannonball · 22/04/2021 10:06

Solange's clipped delivery puts me in mind of Victoria Wood doing the in-store beauty demonstrator.

Anonmousse · 22/04/2021 10:13

I'd love to see this. As well as Paul and Pru do one of their technical challenges!
Solange is a designer, which doesnt neccessarily mean she practically makes a lot of jewellery, although I would imagine she knows how to. but if you dont practise regularly you wont be super quick at something. Both myself and a colleague were noticeably slower for the first few days when we first came back after mat leave.

3CCC · 22/04/2021 22:27

This weeks episode was better

I'm warming to the male judge

Loved Hugo's broach just wish he'd stick to the brief of the 1st task
