All That Glitters: jewellery making the reality TV competition way

Anyone else watch this?

Presenter Katherine Ryan was UNBELIEVABLY irritating.

OP posts:
dayswithaY · 14/04/2021 12:49

I was so looking forward to this but it just fell flat. The contestants felt awkward with each other and they all seemed intimidated by Katherine.

I kept thinking about the the warmth and camaraderie between Alan Carr and the contestants on Interior Design Masters. They all seemed to genuinely enjoy being around him. Same as Sewing Bee, where Joe, the judges and contestants all seem like a happy team. They are both feel good shows but All That Glitters felt very cold. Crap title too.

I'll just focus on Sewing Bee instead.

MoltenLasagne · 14/04/2021 12:56

I really liked the contestants but definitely agree on the comments about Katherine Ryan and the judges. I'd also like more insight into what they're doing and more filming of the different stages of the jewellery making process.

Will persevere but definitely glad to have Sewing Bee as a replacement starting today!

ChequerBoard · 14/04/2021 12:59

I agree, these shows work when they are warm and fuzzy. The good ones are as much about camaraderie and the contestants supporting each and celebrating their artistry and shared passion as they are about competition.

The cold, spiky note of this show does not work at all.

3CCC · 14/04/2021 13:53

I normally like KR but she kept somehow missing the mark

I'm not keen on Solange she's very cold and I don't think she like the male judge very much

It may just be because it was the first episode and they are all just getting used to it all

Can anyone enlighten me whether but was filmed before, during or after covid????

JemimaTab · 14/04/2021 14:20

It must have been pre-Covid, as they showed Andy receiving her MBE from the Queen, wearing her commissioned pendant - and I don’t think the Queen has been doing MBE ceremonies since before the pandemic.

3CCC · 14/04/2021 14:31

That's what we thought but that was over a year ago and it seems a long time to be only coming to our screens now if that's the case.

Whitney168 · 14/04/2021 14:47

I think I'm going to love this, but oh some of the comments - 'imagine how confident a straight white man would be at this point'. Ermmm, I imagine the SWM would be feeling equally crap at that point, time wouldn't magically have stretched out for him to be able to somehow complete the unfinishable task.

I think I thought they would all be amateur jewellers, but interesting to see that all/most are working for other people and producing saleable jewellery already, so I think we're going to see some fabulous stuff.

Love the range of ages and the young blokes who have taken it as a career.

jay55 · 14/04/2021 14:47

Bake off and Sewing bee are really good at talking about techniques to those of us who are a bit clueless and the judges on both will talk about different approaches to the same thing in an engaging way.
It would be nice if this beds in and does the same.

I liked blown away too and agree about season 2 sob story can't follow the brief man being super annoying.

SimonJT · 14/04/2021 14:49

I watched it today, I’m not a fan of KR, but she came across awfully, her comments about paternity and about eight inches just weren’t appropriate.

The presenter is meant to be there to provide support to contestants.

steppemum · 14/04/2021 16:54

Having made lots of negative comments, I am definitely going to keep watching, I do think the first episodes of these things are always a bit stilted. If the judges relax and warm up, then it could improve.

Hopdathelf · 14/04/2021 18:10

I think delivery is everything. I can imagine Joe Lycett making the 8 inches and straight white man comments on Sewing Bee and then coming across a cheeky and irreverent.

Floralnomad · 14/04/2021 21:17

We watched this tonight , the issue was always going to be Katherine Ryan for me as I just don’t find her amusing at all and indeed she was an issue . Not keen on Solange either , she came across as a right misery . Will see how next week is as I didn’t mind most of the contestants .

3CCC · 15/04/2021 08:22

Seeing the sewing bee last night. I know that show has been going longer and that joe and the judges have done more than one series together. But the rapport and encouragement and stuff was so much better than All That Glitters.

MoltenLasagne · 15/04/2021 08:58

Watching the Sewing Bee last night made me appreciate how good they are at explaining the technicalities of what they're doing, what kind of processes are being used, where errors may happen etc. All that Glitters didn't really do that.

adrianmolesmole · 15/04/2021 12:42

I just watched the first episode and will watch the entire series, as a hobbyist I'm curious as to what I can learn. Glad to know I'm not the only one whose hand shakes when it comes to soldering lol.

Agree with others in that it lacks the warmth and fuzziness of similar shows, which is so disappointing. Both judges seemed incredibly stern and took the fun out of the whole show. Kathryn Ryan's comedy style is more suited to news/satire but I didn't mind her jokes actually, because I think the show needs MORE jokes! Most of the time KR looked bored though, especially when interviewing, I didn't get the impression she was particularly interested in the subject matter, which is a shame.

absolutely. I was watching them explain what a facing was, and why the hem had buckled a bit, and why this bit is tricky and what bagging out was, and I was thinking, THAT was what Glitters was missing.

A huge difference wasn’t it. Joe can be quite crude, but his delivery allows him to get away with it. Kathryn comes across as aggressive, she clearly doesn’t intend to, but thats how she appears in the show.
3CCC · 15/04/2021 19:56

SimonJT a huge difference. I'm trying to think if Katherine has done any other presenting? Not a "have I got news for you" guest appearance but a proper presenting a series gig. Because it's almost like she went to the Joe Lycett school of presenting but hasn't got the experience to go there yet

cateycloggs · 17/04/2021 18:30

Just watching the repeat of this from the beginning as missed half of it before. I did not realise it had been filmed in Birmingham which adds to the interest for me. Thinking it would be fascinating to have a whole series on the history of jewellery making. Has there ever been one? I know nothing about it but admire the skill so much.

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 17/04/2021 18:48

I thought I was going to enjoy this but had to turn it off because of KR vocal fry. It's a voice technique that irrationally enrages me sadly.

JackieWeaverFever · 17/04/2021 18:55

Solange really reminds me of Rachel koo in the zumbo jumbo dream desserts show, when the contestants fail and she insincerley states "may your sweetest dreams come true" fade to indifferent grimace.

Absolutely miserable and Catherine Ryan, who I don't mind usually, was dire.

The jewelers seem great I feel sorry for them.

Is her voice what is meant by vocal fry? I have never been quite sure, it seems like a nasal tone to me. Katherine is Canadian I believe and she does seem to have quite an acerbic style. I have seen her on panel shows where it is more suited. She did seem quite nervous as I suppose the role is different for her. All these poor celebrities deperate to make a living!
TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 17/04/2021 19:54

cateycloggs it is where the voice goes all croaky when talking

TodaysFishIsTroutALaCreme · 17/04/2021 19:57

This is a good example of it

Blackopal · 17/04/2021 20:05

Was really looking forward to watching this, agree the judges seemed monotone.

I also felt that ,apart from Dan, the jewellers weren't very impressive.
The finish seemed very poor on alot of pieces. I would much rather they had longer on each piece, and we got to really see the talent.

Didn't mind KR though!
