Anyone else watch this?

Presenter Katherine Ryan was UNBELIEVABLY irritating.

Overall I enjoyed this and Hugo was right for the winner, although for me Dan’s earring were nicer. I’m not a fan of pearls but I like Dan’s “signature” that he developed.

I'm not sure they judge the 'Bestseller' quite to its brief really. I imagine that Dan's pearl drops would probably sell the most out of the three, as they were a much broader appeal (although to be honest, I didn't like any of the three, unusually - if I had to have any, I'd have chosen Hugo's, but didn't love them). Dan's were beautifully executed.

I do think Dan is the most competent of the jewellers, but a bit bland and samey. Definitely a market for his work, I'm sure, and I liked some of it - but nothing very exciting.

I like some of Tamara's stuff a lot, but seems much simpler and again a different style that is maybe a bit Marmite.

Hugo is a much more exciting designer and so much more individual.

I want Hugo's dragonflies and Sonny's much criticised bangles. There were several other pieces I'd be delighted to wear but those stuck in my mind.

Horehound · 20/05/2021 15:58

They did t choose Hugo's pearl earrings over Dan's though. Remember they left everyone's lights on and they didn't say his was best, I don't think?
I bloody loved Hugo's earrings and the mantiika head dress too. Deserved winner. My husband preferred Dan's though

We loved Dan but Hugo was a deserved winner. Very talented young man who loves his mum.

Dan's earrings were nicest. Tam's reminded us of a certain scene from There's Something About Mary!

gold in its natural state it is a yellow colour and quite soft.
24ct gold is pure gold, the yellow (or most gold) in colour and the softest
22ct is 22 parts gold out of 24 and soft (always yellow gold)
18ct is 18 parts gold out of 24, alloyed with other metals (adding palladium makes white gold, adding copper makes rose gold) and harder wearing.
9ct is 9 parts gold out of 24 , alloyed with other metals not as rich in colour, but harder wearing.
I think 9ct is harder to work with than 18ct

Just caught up. Personally I liked Dan’s jewellery the best and his headpiece was stunning.

Hugo has had some gorgeous pieces though (the dragonflies were stunning) but I think the judges favoured him from the first episode and not Tam. Wink

The show just made it to the US on HBOMax and I was super excited. However my initial thought was exactly yours- the presenter is sooo annoying. I think it is wierd to have a North American for a British contestants only show. Her personality is incredibly grating as is her voice. The female judge is terrible too- no personality other than ick snob.

JemimaTab · 25/06/2021 08:19

It did improve a bit as it went on, and I think I’d probably watch it if they brought it back for a second series, but they’d have to make some tweaks. I liked the contestants and was interested in their skills, but the presenter/judges weren’t very warm and didn’t really seem to gel with the contestants (as compared to, say, Sewing Bee which gets this just right IMO) - and the staging was a bit downbeat too.

LadyEloise · 26/06/2021 10:44

I didn't warm to the presenter either.
It was "all about her" and seemed very scripted.
I found her annoying.
I know it's wrong to criticise people doing their job/ doing their best.
