Ok, I've started a new one in anticipation of Thread 3 filling up tonight, part way through the episode!

@OhWhyNot

BRB2021 yes I think it has

I thought this but others remembered seeing Ryan’s mum in season 1 (better memory than me I only watched it last week Blush )

This is Ryan’s mum:

TheSpottedZebra · 12/04/2021 19:41

I think the majority of UK male prisoners DO get a kettle. They used to have to pay for it from their weekly allowance (canteen) but iirc it is now allocated. There's a whole subculture in things you can buy with 'canteen' and cook up in your cell using a kettle, like cakes made with angel delight and dried milk.

You can also use the kettle to boil up sugar and water, to chuck over someone -i forget what this is called. Didnt this jappen to Denton, or was that plain boiling water?

Pomegranatespompom · 12/04/2021 19:42

It doesn’t make sense that Ryan is so powerful, yes he was recruited a few years ago but he’d still be pretty junior in the ocg despite his willingness for violence. Why has he risen through the ranks so much ?

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 12/04/2021 19:42

@MysteriousAffairAtStyles

Buckell’s phone record had DCI gates as one of his last dialled numbers. Just sayin’.

Ooh. Although I suppose that fits given they were involved with the same investigations at the time

But mysteriously, as someone very sharp spotted earlier in the thread (or in the other LOD thread), the call was dated 6 months after Tony Gates died! Confused

Oops 😳 I’d not read that far in the thread. Hmmm that is very odd indeed! Error maybe but Jed is SO careful about this stuff normally 🧐

Can’t believe we’ve had 45 pages of posts in less than 24h. This is possibly the fastest moving group of threads I’ve ever been on.

And, Steve authorises Chloe getting him and Lakewell out of the van. I wouldn't have known what pp said about bullets reverberating, it makes sense, but what I mean is, I don't think that makes Chloe bent. And she is a little stilted but I think she's just trying to do a good job and taking it all very seriously. She's more impassioned in the shoot out and looks genuinely upset after.

MysteriousAffairAtStyles · 12/04/2021 19:43

@CHISistoast

I'm not through all the comments yet (should take Mondays off work). But! Why wasn't Lakewell transported somewhat more subtly, like they used to use dodgy builder's vans and the like in Spooks? I mean, could they have attracted any more attention to themselves?!
Well, quite. And given that they knew he was at massive risk (so much so that they had witness protection paperwork drawn up), why was he taken straight back into the same prison, where he had already alluded to the wardens being in the pocket of the OCG? Confused

Would it have made a difference though as there is clearly corruption running all through, including the prison officers (SecuriVite or something) at both men and women's prisons.
Heyha · 12/04/2021 19:43

I'm surprised Lakewell thought he was going to be ok just going back to Blackthorn after all that tbh. I reckon I'd have 'fessed up and taken my chances on the outside in protection, he must have known he was a goner either way after all that effort to get him en route.
Actually now that I think I'm surprised Lakewell even took the risk of contacting Vella from inside. Maybe he really was just overconfident.

TheSpottedZebra · 12/04/2021 19:46

IS Ryan powerful, or is he just active?
He's carrying out someone else's instructions isnt he?

MysteriousAffairAtStyles · 12/04/2021 19:47

Yes, I’m really surprised that he spoke to Vella at all, given his obvious fear of repercussions, and his awareness that there was no safe or discreet way to discuss anything ‘inside’

Pomegranatespompom · 12/04/2021 19:47

He’s very confident- has the air of someone untouchable?

minou123 · 12/04/2021 19:48

@Piggywaspushed

Just thinking about the Macca bankrobber.

Ted has never seen him. Unlikely to say 'Mother Of God' at seeing his photo. he would say 'who's that wee fella?'

It really had to be someone he instantly recognises (and fears).

I agree.

It can't be a minor person, it has to be one of the big players.

My money is on Gill Biggalow. I know Steve said "he", but I like my theory and I'd like to see Gill back. She's a fan character

Bluntness100 · 12/04/2021 19:49

I just watched it again, as my husband elected to watch the golf last night so wished to watch it tonight.

Kates definitely under cover. Not for ac 12 but another ac dept. That’s why she followed the car at the beginning. And why she’s been trying to get close to jo. Ted knows she’s under cover and ac. Steve doesn’t.

Chloe I reckon is a bad one and folks are right on that,. She was in the interview room when ted had stormed out,, and James says to Steve “I didn’t talk, did I, di Arnott” and Steve looks at him for a few seconds then nods. The camera then shifts to Chloe staring at him.

So I reckon Chloe then told whomever he had talked. And that’s what got him killed.

Ikeameatballs · 12/04/2021 19:51

Yes @drspouse I wonder if the other woman in the photo could be a girlfriend rather than a family member.

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 12/04/2021 20:05

@PeskyRooks

I wish they would make a Line of Duty annual! Posters! Quizzes! Interviews with the stars!!
I would so buy that, especially for those “which character are you” flowchart quizzes, or “if you answered mostly As, you’re corrupt. Mostly Bs, you can work for AC12”

Maybe some comic strips based on character back stories, and craft instructions for how to make your own wire?

SophieB100 · 12/04/2021 20:14

As well as a calendar and an annual, we need a monthly LOD binder that we can add to - so we can build our own incident board, and every month you get an e-fit photo, and Reg 15 paperwork and stuff. A sort of knit your own AC12 sort of thing.

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 12/04/2021 20:19

And YES to the dress up doll collection.

In fact WHY are there (that I can see) no Line of Duty Popvinyls? I would love a Steve - available in bearded and non bearded versions.

diddl · 12/04/2021 20:19

I couldn't bear to watch what happened to Lakewell so missed a bit.

Did they just leave him there with Buckells?

How does that get explained?

"It strikes me all the time just what an unrewarding thing being involved with the OGC seems to be. Almost no one is actually getting any benefits from it."

I think that the benefits are that your misdemeanors aren't exposed.

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 12/04/2021 20:19

OMG yes it would be like my old Funfax. God I loved that thing.
Magnificentbeast · 12/04/2021 20:21

I'm starting to have suspicions about Chloe too.

I'm also going to have to rewatch this episode. Seems like a lot going on and I missed a lot of it.

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 12/04/2021 20:24

BTW with the Peter Greysham thing from the raid in s5 - copper’s first name was Kevin. Cafferty describes him as “on the take”. I doubt it has any significance to the plot really or that it’ll come up again, but Jed probably just put it in there to show that a relative of someone on the list is corrupt, in a “apple doesn’t fall far” way?

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/04/2021 20:44

OMG - I need to design some AC-12 printables and put them on Etsy 😂
PrincessScarlett · 12/04/2021 20:47

So, just reading up on Lisa McQueen. I'd assumed she was in prison. However she was given immunity from prosecution in exchange for information on OCG members. But she deliberately didn't give Ryan away. She was then allowed to mentor school children to stop them being drawn into organised crime. WTF?! Why would they let a senior OCG member anywhere near kids? I think there is plenty of scope for her to come back. Especially as she is linked to Ryan.

Piggywaspushed · 12/04/2021 20:47

Google is your friend blondes. Google on a laptop/phone and listen. Am also not techno and it worked for me. No fancy schmancy apps required.
