Ok, I've started a new one in anticipation of Thread 3 filling up tonight, part way through the episode!

The betting shop robbers did seem unfeasibly young for that kind of crime. If I were casting a crime drama, I'd select older actors, unless their age was crucial to a plot point. So they are low-level, expendable OCG members, and Jo gave up the dark-haired one for adoption when she was younger, which is how they are manipulating her?

MysteriousAffairAtStyles · 12/04/2021 11:30

Buckell’s phone record had DCI gates as one of his last dialled numbers. Just sayin’.

Ooh. Although I suppose that fits given they were involved with the same investigations at the time

But mysteriously, as someone very sharp spotted earlier in the thread (or in the other LOD thread), the call was dated 6 months after Tony Gates died! Confused

storminabuttercup · 12/04/2021 11:32

Jo can't be Ryan's mum. His mum was the horrible lass we've seen before.

CheekyWeeShite · 12/04/2021 11:32

in S1 we were told Dot had been a caddy. Usually things have been shown to the audience, but not necessarily to AC12.

Dot only told ACC Hilton that he was a caddy right near the end of season 1 IIRC (penultimate or last episode) and think his link was revealed at the end of season 1 so it wasn’t a cleverly hidden longterm clue. He told ACC Hilton and then not long afterwards he was with Tommy Hunter who said “best caddy I’ve ever had” or similar, and this was long before AC-12 ever heard the term Caddy. So as soon as the term was used by AC-12 we knew who it was.

storminabuttercup · 12/04/2021 11:36

Also Ryan was born the year jo joined the force

AwkwardArnottDentonFumble · 12/04/2021 11:36

Also on Buckells call list.... ‘Paul campbell’ - Tommy Hunter was in witness protection as ‘Alex Campbell’ wow good spot!

I like the idea that Ryan killed Gail too.

MysteriousAffairAtStyles · 12/04/2021 11:37

“So Jo is Psychopath Ryan’s mum”

That was my first thought!

Why would she be? The DNA match is from someone who is in the system as a ‘nominal’, not as a serving officer.

Plus Ryan’s mum didn’t seem like she’d pass an adoption assessment. She was pretty crap all round, from what I remember.

LemonTT · 12/04/2021 11:43

Just wanted to flag that building a family tree around Jo isn’t going to solve and explain the basis for the corruption. She is clearly not in control and doesn’t want to be involved. The relationship will only explain how she was corrupted.

The big clue for me was the mention of the role racism played in the a wider level of corruption. Linked to the Balaclava Men, the anti - terror unit operations, the Chief Constance and the death of the journalist.

The Balaclava men have always had strong undertones of a paramilitary group. The obvious links to NI and what happened there may be a bigger clue. Did the anti terrorist units use right wing terror groups in its war on Islamic terror? Like in NI were there assassinations and bad intel. Are there links with paramilitaries and organised crime that are being or were tolerated to cover it all up?

CupcakesK · 12/04/2021 11:44

I'm not sure if Chloe is bent or not, but I think it would be too coincidental that she has popped up in this series, which has so many links to series 1 and has the same first name and is mixed race. Also. when she was clearly listening in when Jackie Laverty's DNA being found on the freezer was discussed.

I think Chloe, if not bent, has her own story arc coming up (?maybe in series 7) to discover the truth about her dad and perhaps to bring down the OCG

We don't know her background - e.g. where she was before joining AC-12 or how she joined them. She could have been trained elsewhere and therefore her current team are unaware of her parents. Those recruiting her may just have seen the her dad was a DCI killed in the line of duty as nothing dodgy was officially recorded about him.

CartTriesToDriveTheHorse · 12/04/2021 11:44

Not last night's episode but the one before. Are we sure Terry said 'other man' and not 'oven man'? Or am I just finding non-existent links to appliances, no doubt influenced by the importance of a freezer.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 12/04/2021 11:46

@CheekyWeeShite - it wasn't cleverly hidden, that's the whole point. We re-watched S1 last year and commented we were told Dot had been a caddy. By the time AC12 were figuring out who the caddy was and Dot was making out it was Steve, we'd forgotten, although we knew he was a wrong un. It was a small detail along the way. The audience knew when AC12 didn't.

CheekyWeeShite · 12/04/2021 11:46

WAIT!

I thought it couldn’t be Corbett because his DNA would be in the database as a police officer.

But actually maybe it wouldn’t because they said when he went into Operation Peartree all his records were removed from the police database!

CheekyWeeShite · 12/04/2021 11:47

Fair enough. I hadn’t forgotten at all.

BloodyInternetFood · 12/04/2021 11:50

Not sure about Chole - she did look very nervous in the car but if she'd dodgy she's not good at it as she keeps giving up info - such as pointing out the car coming out the side road and suggesting the leak might be out of A12

However, the bit where she didn't get up to open the door and the other officer did has got to mean something. Maybe it will lead to some sort of physiological issue such as survivor's guilt. She wouldn't go home when Ted suggested and just ploughed on

puginamug · 12/04/2021 11:51

It can't be Corbett because their dates of birth are 4 months apart. So either they have same Dad, different mothers, or it's someone else.

Also (and I can't believe I googled this), in West Yorkshire "The youngest age of a Police Office serving as a Detective Constable is 27 years" which I imagine is pretty standard. So Chloe's age doesn't add up either. She was only little in Series 1.

Jo could have been persuaded by family to let a family member (e.g. grandmother) care for Ryan and he's then bounced around informal family foster care. But being a "nominal" is more of an issue.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 12/04/2021 11:54

I think Chloe having the same first name as one of Gates's daughters is a typical Jed Mercurio red herring.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/04/2021 11:56

@NewModelArmyMayhem18

Am I being really obtuse or is it likely that the partial match is going to be with someone who is either still alive or only recently departed (otherwise how likely is it that their DNA would be in Farida's house?), unless it's been planted???? Jackie L. and Tommy seem unlikely as they died nigh on a decade ago?
Their DNA wasn't in the house. It was a match for Jo's.
storminabuttercup · 12/04/2021 11:57

I agree the name thing is a red herring.
There's been a Lisa in the lass two series.

Think it's been said but Dryden is old enough to be jo's dad. We know he played around as he got Lyndsey Denton pregnant.

stevematekatemate · 12/04/2021 11:57

@GuyFawkesDay

My theory:

That flat of "Jo's" isn't hers. OCG 'safehouse'. Linked to OCG via Danny Waldron (same house he was brought up in therefore links to the care home paedophile ring). Hence all the bolts. And why Ryan knows it, and the dodgy MSN laptop is there.

The photo I'm not sure is AMM but is Jo and her mother. Could her mother be Anne-Marie's sister, so her and Corbett are cousins?

Chloe is dodgy. Why did Lakewell call her Chloe on that interview and not DC Bishop? Hmm. He knows her first name. How?

Still think Kate is undercover like S1 but for another unit (maybe Carmichael?) But will come good for AC12 in the end.

Osborne is H.

When Chloe and Steve went to the prison to interview JL. Steve introduced her as Chloe.
EsmaCannonball · 12/04/2021 12:09

I think Steve's drug problem has left him vulnerable to blackmail, but I can't see him being a Big Bad because then things like being tortured and thrown over stairwells wouldn't make sense.

It would be too obvious to make Ted a villain. The whole thing with the laptop porn was a bit lame, so I'm hoping that is part of a bigger, over-arching storyline. The secrecy over his debts was understandable, as it can be very hard to admit to failures when you've made a big deal out of being honourable.

I've felt, from about series 2, that if any of the 3 is truly corrupt it's Kate.

CheekyWeeShite · 12/04/2021 12:11

Of course it can be Corbett - it didn’t say they were siblings. They could be half siblings, they could be cousins.

@dodiebantock

NobbySignaler. What a great idea - aTed Calendar! Yes please I have already put it on my list for Santa! What a treat - turning over the page of a Ted picture - every month! I would be jelly in his hands he can interrogate me all day and night - would confess to anything.
Not just a picture - a "Tedism"!

I don’t think he’s old enough to be her dad! Jo was born 1979 so is 40/41. Dryden is born 1965 according to Line of Duty Wikia. But they could be related in some other way.

I’m also wondering if the specific match is the person we have seen, or whether it will be a match to (eg) Tommy Hunter’s dad. I’m just struggling to think whose DNA would be on file from that long ago.
