New thread!

Sad Sal. Thought she'd be safe after the drink flask.

As an aside, I listened to a podcast with Keith on it the other day and he said it is specifically clay that makes him cry, he doesn't get overly emotional about other things.

FadedRed · 03/03/2021 12:25

Could it be that Sal was, in so many posters (and therefore viewers) minds, the most likely bet to win the final, that she had to go to keep the ‘drama’ of the open-to-anyone final, rather than a predestined result? Or is that a conspiracy theory too far?
I also agree she is an extremely talented potter and much more skilled than the remaining competitors appear to be, but I thought she was skating on very thin ice with the water-feature, which, though stunning to look at, also did not fulfil the brief in regard to the ‘animal’ being a substantial proportion of finished product but her sea slug was tiny compared with the shell.
Certainly agree that the potters (baker, sewers, painters) should be given sufficient but reasonable amount of time to demonstrate their skills, rather than rushing them to finish in unreasonable haste.

Bee0808 · 03/03/2021 12:28

I'm glad Sal is gone.
She was very smug and her comment of "I'm not from South America I'm from Cornwall" really rankled with me for some reason.
Bottom line : She and Alon did not follow the brief.
Its sheer arrogance and its cost them both their place in the show.
Alon can be excused to an extent due to his youth :)
I'd like Adam or Peter to win I think.
They are both pretty consistent and I thought Adams house should have won on slab week!

Bee0808 · 03/03/2021 12:28

And yes her water feature was poor

wandawombat · 03/03/2021 12:36

Think Sal was the strongest potter. Sad she went...

My friend has a professional potter relative who gets very stressed watching the programme, as she think the time allocated isn't enough.

You can't go on Bake Off if you've ever baked professionally.

Floralnomad · 03/03/2021 12:38

I don’t think Sal was nailed on to win anyway , she could easily have gone on water feature week , the only person who has never really been at risk is Jodie , and she’s genuinely an amateur potter , or so it seems .

bruffin · 03/03/2021 12:41

For some reason Hannah really irritates me, im quite happy for anyone elseto win , although i do like Jodie.
I was disappointed that Alon and Sal went out, but i can understand why

Bee0808 · 03/03/2021 13:08

Alon is very inventive/intuitive
I'm not sure that's what the programme is about tbh ?
They are given pretty strict briefs and the trick is to work within that brief.
I liked Henry but his raccoon water feature was a bit of a disaster.
I really liked Shenue (sp?) but her decoration on her last task was...really odd. It was just splodges?

SilverBirchWithout · 03/03/2021 13:34

I was really disappointed to see Sal go, as well as Alon because they were my 2 favourite potters.

It was not surprising Alon went, he’s been pushing the brief since he started. However his creativity and design abilities were wonderful to watch in someone so young. This week’s designs were perhaps one step too far - the seed pot opening was disastrous and the paint design very weak.
After my initial shock about Sal, I now understand after a few days their decision a bit more. She is so obviously the most skilled and experienced potter - but I’m not convinced she ever pushed herself beyond her own comfort zone. The dog design had been used in previous weeks and the neck on the pot fundamentally turned the brief into something completely different, the shape being so important to this weeks challenge.
Like others have said I wonder whether her (as edited) on screen dry wit, was in reality a bit more abrasive and smug in reality.
Certainly the most skilled potter, but was she the most creative?

IntermittentParps · 03/03/2021 14:36

I wonder whether her (as edited) on screen dry wit, was in reality a bit more abrasive and smug in reality.
I didn't find her all that witty (in a dry way or otherwise). I don't mean that as an insult; I liked her for what comes across to me as her unassumingness and lack of drama. She just seemed to be keeping her head down and getting on with it.

her comment of "I'm not from South America I'm from Cornwall" really rankled with me for some reason.
I thought that was a fair point she made. I think what she was saying was that, as the original makers of the pots used the animals and nature around them for inspiration, she was going to as well. Which is a well-thought-out decision and a good course of action IMO; she understood the impulse and rationale behind the originals and wanted to use it herself but in a way that rang true for her.

I don't think the decoration did for her, it was the rim.

These are the rules

8. You cannot be, nor have ever been, a Fellow or a Professional member of the Craft Potters Association (CPA) nor can you be judged, by us, to be at that level.

9. You must not be a professional potter, meaning that you do not work full time as a potter, either at home or in a professional environment.

SoupDragon · 03/03/2021 19:28

The potters' websites might be misleading as they could be post-throwdown.

I've just looked at Adam's and, on his About Me page, the main photo appears be be him throwing a pot whilst naked 😂

Heavens to Betsy. He comes across as such a nice young man Shock Grin

SheldonesqueIsUnwell · 04/03/2021 10:36

And here was me getting all disturbed at Crynkeef showing his oxters while potting in his dungers...

I may have to lie down..

I've read his "about me" text now. It's quite interesting.

Apparently he often throws in just his apron so that his fiancé can just hose him down 😂😂

I want him to win now!

TokyoSushi · 04/03/2021 19:07

Oooh 😍 Team Adam or Jodie for me!

mangoontoast · 07/03/2021 10:51

@SoupDragon

I listened to that podcast! It was a rare decent episode. The presenters really annoy me!
SoupDragon · 07/03/2021 11:20

Yes! I've only listened to that one because I wanted to hear him but the presenters have put me off listening to any more. I'll scan the list occasionally to see if they have any good guests though.

Ovalone · 07/03/2021 14:33

I wondered with Sal if there was something behind the scenes either that she'd said or annoyed someone eg the production staff or the judges. She is by far the most knowledgeable and I wonder if she disagreed and they didn't want her remaining. I think also mentioning "college" was a error.

I do also think on these competition shows they are looking to sustain the "everyone could win" feel as the final approaches and Sal was never really fazed by anything she saw.

I think too to some extent they have the idea of having someone catchy and photogenic coming through as winner and "move the pots/challenges around" to get that to happen. I don't think Sal fits that unfortunately. She's not very charismatic. Jodie or others I can see making a better fist of it and drawing people into pottery.

Mydogisagentleman · 07/03/2021 16:44

Adam or Jodie to win.
Hannah is too wet and Keith is like fleshy Keith who lives next door

Wolfcub · 07/03/2021 19:58

Evening pot lovers

Wolfcub · 07/03/2021 20:03

I expect Peter to do well in the bathroom challenge

SchadenfreudePersonified · 07/03/2021 20:03

O thank heavens!

I've found you all.
