Anyone watching?

I've just recently read the book and thought it was ok but then got a bit strange.

Hopefully the series will be a good watch though.

@Covidcorvid he was gay but he only met David once before he took over Adele's body. I could imagine he would try and stay with him and get married at first but they were together for 10 years and he seemed more driven to stay with David than to just take Adele's body and money. I just don't really get what anyone (Rob or Louise) saw in David....certainly nothing to be hopping body to body for when he (Rob) could have lived Adele's life any way he wanted.

Not exactly a great psychiatrist - -didn't notice his fiancée totally shifted personality and then his bit on the side! @Mummy195 you can't keep someone drugged up and basically under house arrest for no particular reason though! She didn't even actually hurt Marianne, just threatened her.

BTW yes I am way over thinking this and picking holes in what is a ridiculous story...maybe I should read the book?

BlackCatShadow · 25/02/2021 11:52

David did notice that his fiancee had changed personality, but he loved her and she had a history of mental illness, so he thought he could help her. Realistically, which would a rational person believe that his fiancee was behaving oddly or that her soul or spirit or whatever had been replaced by someone else? Adele never told David about the astral travel.

I think the younger David was quite handsome, kind, intelligent, fun. I can see why they loved him. It was the stress of living with Rob/Adele that turned him miserable.

I think in the book he knew David over a period of years in the mini series in was a day so I get why is less believable.I suspect he replaced David like a form of attachment like an addicted abit like his heroin and then added his jealously of Adeles life. Once in Adeles body hes no craves heroin like his former body did, its only when he's losing David to Louise does he seek out injecting heroin again, I think he just has an addictive personality.

David does reference a change in Adeles personality when Louise says what happened to the girl you saved in the fire and he says he doesn't know what happened to the girl he saved from.the fire who adel changes sometimes following the events upon her return from the hospital when David comes back after he returns the second Time from university but this time.'Adele' has something on him. I haven't read the book but this might go in deeper or he might have discussed adeles personality changes more with marianne maybe.

feistymumma · 25/02/2021 11:54

Was really enjoying it until episode 5 where I thought what nonsense is this? Had I known I wouldn't have touched it with a barge pole. Wish I could get my time back :)

feistymumma · 25/02/2021 11:56

@RigaBalsam

I hate anything super natural. I didn't realise. I thought it was a lovely psych drama but oh no. It felt such a let down.

I agree with the following description.

Not only does the novel swap genres halfway through, shifting from psychological thriller to supernatural fantasy, it swaps lead characters. Literally.

Silly!

I hate super natural as well and was pretty annoyed it turned out that way without notice. The whole split/ switching personality thing at the end was downright dumb
PolarnOPirate · 25/02/2021 12:29

Was good until the last episode so I feel short changed!! What the hell was that!

timegoesbysoslowly · 25/02/2021 12:42

Was enjoying this until last 2 episodes, got bored was surfing the internet while watching so wasn't concentrating and then got totally confused!

Now watching series 4 of unforgotten, binged watched the last 3 series over the last weeks. But I now have to wait a whole week to watch next episode, how will I cope, quite easy as have rubbish memory and already forgotten the cliffhanger in episode one!

@LIamaDelRey

From teardrop's link mummy - The book gave Rob's inner thought to be as follows...

“There is still one small obstacle to overcome for our happiness to be complete. David might not have known Louise well, but Ian does and Adam does. Those links need to be severed. […] Adam’s departure from my life will need to be somewhat more dramatic. It shouldn’t be too difficult to arrange. Children are notoriously accident prone.”

Now THAT makes sense, but why on earth didnt the producers have Rob's voice narrating this in the last scene when "Lou" is looking oddly at Adam in the car? That would have made it slightly more understandable!
Teardrop2021 · 25/02/2021 16:42

I think having robs voice over at the end would have broken the 4th wall and given a more sinster element which I think personally i'd like however I think they wanted it leave it to the viewers imagination maybe. I also agree rob wasn't dark enough e.g the cat even though he was clearly a sociopath towards the end but we didn't get to see the mask slip and I would imagine the book will detail robs darker parts more clearly.

floofycroissant · 25/02/2021 19:44

Just finished it, I didn't see the ending coming. Can't say I loved the series but I did enjoy Louise's character and how torn she was between the two of them.

The three gaping plot holes for me were; waiting so late to introduce Rob to travelling and then suddenly within a day he goes from not knowing anything to being an expert who knows that they can swap bodies. Eh Hmm.

The other one was Louise travelling during the fire. What on earth was she hoping that'd achieve other than watching Adele/Rob burn to death? She'd already broken into the house, so clearly knew how to. And also AFAIK she never went upstairs in their home, so how could she travel there?

The third was why introduce Louise to traveling at all? I just did didn't understand how that could do anything but work against him, and why would he want to be found out?

Uptoongirl · 25/02/2021 21:03

@floofycroissant, louise did go up to the bedroom once. Rob took her up to show her the painting on the wall. I think Rob all along may have had an inkling he might need another body and had been looking for someone who was able to travel (and also why he showed her the bedroom). Bit of a coincidence it would be his husband's other woman mind who had this ability!

Yes agree Rob learned about the jumping ability pretty quickly, even though Adele seemed to have been doing it for quite a while before showing him.

I think the main problem was the shows pacing, too long spent before introducing what it was actually all about.

floofycroissant · 25/02/2021 21:18

Ohhhh yeah @Uptoongirl of course!

I was watching this with my dh and realised I had read the book a few years ago. Couldn’t remember it all so googled and found poor reviews of the ending and how confusing some found it. Warned dh that he wouldn’t enjoy the ending but we watched it all. However, about ten minutes from the end, thinking oh maybe would appreciate some clues, I pointed out a few things. Then it all became apparent. He was not amused but has forgiven me! And yes, he didn’t enjoy the ending.

BlackCatShadow · 26/02/2021 09:17

I think Rob knew that David was miserable with Adele and was falling in love with Louise, so that is why he introduced her to astral projection. It was all planned.

louise5754 · 26/02/2021 09:22

@BlackCatShadow Ah so you think all along he wanted to take over louise body?

I still think it's a strange coincidence she had nightmares but I suppose Adele could have still given her the book and used another excuse. Ie it would relax her or chill her out.

I wonder what the last few pages said.

floofycroissant · 26/02/2021 10:02

The plan to kill Adele? From his "research"? As he said he'd read about an idea before suggesting they swap

gingergiraffe · 26/02/2021 12:45

I think Rob was himself in love with David. When he realised that as Adele, David no longer wanted her, he decided to invade Louise’s body so that he could still be with David.

I haven't read the book, but I guess it was about the body swapping idea.

I think when Rob/Adele met Louise and realised that she also had the dreams, it hatched the plan in his/her mind. So, he/she went and got the notebook and gave it to Louise and started setting the plan in motion.

I think it could be a coincidence that Louise also had the dreams, BUT David mentioned that she shone like Adele did. It's possible that he was attracted to Louise because something about her reminded him of the old Adele. That he sensed there was something special about her.

OneMorePieceofCheese · 26/02/2021 17:38

I didn't understand Louise's night terrors and the pills / suicide / fire she kept dreaming of. Was she supposed to have had a turbulent past? Was this something that was in the book but didn't make it across properly?

Twatterati · 26/02/2021 20:38

WTAF?? Watched about 30 mins of the first episode as it'd been raced about on Radio 2. Really didn't like the acting or the massive coincidence of their meeting at the start so left it.

Reading this is sounds a total mind bender!!

Is it worth me re-visiting or shall I just move on and save some hours?

BloggersBlog · 26/02/2021 21:08

Definitely don't waste your time @twatterati

louise5754 · 26/02/2021 21:17

I couldn't image how Rob would get on as Louise.

Having lived Adele's life. Nice house. Money. No need to work.

I mean in the end he married David and will probably have had those things but the moment he walked into Louise flat I imagined he would wonder what he had done. I mean her life wasn't bad, she had a nice flat, job and friends. I just mean compared to Adele's. I suppose he didn't care about that as long as he had David.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 27/02/2021 00:09

Wtf was that , I heard myself say - at the end . I heard there was this twist and I do love a twist , but that was a covid fever dream , I'm guessing.

BaconAndAvocado · 27/02/2021 09:19

@gingergiraffe

I think Rob was himself in love with David. When he realised that as Adele, David no longer wanted her, he decided to invade Louise’s body so that he could still be with David.
This, to me, was the crux of the ending.

Like many others, when it started to go down the supernatural route, I lost the will to live 😂

Disappointing.
