Anyone watching?

I've just recently read the book and thought it was ok but then got a bit strange.

Hopefully the series will be a good watch though.

@GCITC

I'm so glad it wasn't just me thinking wtf with the clumpy shoes.
Who wears shoes like that all day while cooking.
icelollycraving · 20/02/2021 20:18

Who wears shoes like that, cooking or not?

Covidcorvid · 20/02/2021 20:41

Well I thought Rob was alive the whole time...but not in the way it happened!

So I was convinced they’d decided to kill david and it was his body in the well. And that Rob had been impersonating David for the last ten years.

Think my story line was better!

LIamaDelRey · 20/02/2021 22:36

Knew nothing about it - was expecting something different from the trailer, then clocked on it was a psychological thriller and recommended it as such to someone on here after 3 episodes sorry
Thought Rob was a manifestation of heroin addiction i.e. not real and when she said Rob had killed him, it was going to be him throwing her drugs away/getting her clean and the reveal would be he had never been there (as a pp said Fight Club style). Thought her coming to each time was coming back from a drug-induced high. Even thought that Lou at one point might also be an addict albeit high-functioning as she had known all the areas and also came to a few times. And that David was a high-functioning alcoholic, treating addicts, the irony being unable to heal himself or his wife and that one or both had committed arson. That the tablets were methadone.
So spent much of it not thinking Rob was real and therefore was surprised to find he was then utterly bewildered when it went all woo, and we were expected to believe in astral projection.
It felt like when I read the sadness of eating lemon cake and - spoiler - the missing brother turns out to have transformed into a chair!
So was already to criticise it to the hilt and pick holes in the idea that an addict ODing would need to be hidden etc when we had the body swap and then that twist. Despite the u-turn from crimi to fantasy, I still liked the ending very much. Not sure how I felt about the demonisation of Glaswegian gay drug addicts but that twist made you reevaluate what you had seen before - the sex scene from behind for example.
Plus I loved the fact that Adam knew something was afoot - it reminded me very much of - spoiler - the ending of Us. (And that in that the original Adelaide wasn't the true baddie either just as the original Adele wasn't in this). Fab stuff. You also know the marriage is going to go to shit as soon as he realises Louise lacks empathy, in about a month's time. He had said him and Adele might have worked had she been haunted by Rob's death. Whilst neither he nor Louise will grieve for 'Adele', David will be back to Who the hell am I married to? within weeks - Rob can't change who he really is (although his character was initially funny but long term nah, cannot see it).
No idea about the pigeons being Adele and Lou - would have to watch again for pigeons but nonetheless, I went from loving it, to thinking I'd solved it, to wtaf gritting my teeth to being rather impressed by being blindsided completely.
It possibly should be billed as drama rather than psych or supernatural but it was worth a binge watch. I also thought they did a good job of making Adele and David look so much younger in flashback. The actress playing Louise is just stunning, so much charisma.
For those who read the book, was the adaptation better? (or have you all swerved it!)

PivotPivotPivottt · 20/02/2021 23:05

Just finished it I really enjoyed it. Got to episode 4/5 and I started to get really confused but then when I figured out what was going on I started started enjoy it again. The twist was great. I know it's based on a book so that was the official ending but I wonder if they will make a second series?

Differences between the book and show

LIamaDelRey · 20/02/2021 23:34

when she said David had killed him (above post)
Thanks for the link above teardrop - really enjoyed reading.

needadvice54321 · 21/02/2021 00:07

Just finished, really enjoyed it!

Summerdayshaze · 21/02/2021 00:08

Why did she bother telling David that Rob was dead in the well. Why not just say he’d gone back home then just lose touch?

LIamaDelRey · 21/02/2021 01:49

I think you're led to believe it was insurance - i.e. he has a hold on him for the rest of his life (so threw the watch down the well on purpose) but he knew David was crazy for Adele so not sure why he felt the need. We don't see them get married but they must have after the events that occurred - so even if it was because David had control of the finances, it still seems odd as it was 'her' inheritance to start with/divorce they'd get half. I guess he fell for him and really wanted her life including her bloke (there was some chemistry - I had thought David was going to have had an affair with him as Rob at one point).

icelollycraving · 21/02/2021 11:33

Makes the scene when Adele was in the high rise estate looking to score believable. Wonder how the blonde woman came off after throwing the first punch.

DarkDarkNight · 21/02/2021 16:29

It was not what I was expecting! I was enjoying it, trying to figure out if Adele was unhinged or David was controlling, I was not expecting the ‘travelling’.

I keep thinking about poor Adam, that scene in the car was Sad he’s just an inconvenience to the new Louise.

On a superficial note, I love Louise’s wardrobe.

queenofarles · 22/02/2021 10:32

The acting is really bad isn’t it ? David is the worst.
Plus I’m really starting to hate any series where towards the end, the protagonist all of sudden releases their inner detective , starts googling late at night and the next morning they are on quest to find answers. Hmm

Covidcorvid · 22/02/2021 11:14

What I don't understand is right when Rob first went into Adele leaving Adele either as a ball or light or possibly as a pigeon......why didn't she just follow Rob/Adele around until her left his body again and pop in the body? Because he kept doing it a lot. Giving her opportunity.

Or could she not follow him to Brighton/London as she couldn't visualize it? But at the end were they not going up to Scotland to the big house? Her ball of light might still be there? And then she could go in Louise's body?

And if they return to London then Louise could go back in her body if Rob leaves it? He won't be able to resist keeping an eye on David.

JustDanceAddict · 22/02/2021 11:15

@queenofarles - re Googling. I was saying to dh / ‘now she Googles 😂’
Ffs, if that were me I would’ve been at the computer straight away.

Meruem · 22/02/2021 12:39

@Covidcorvid

Once they’re dead, they’re dead so the real Adele was in robs body when he killed her so from that point on she wasn’t a ball of light. She was just dead. Likewise the real Louise.

Mooserp · 22/02/2021 20:37

I watched about 15 minutes of the 1st episode and couldn't watch any more. The acting, the script and the directing were just all so bad.

Sounds like it went a bit bonkers.

BitOfFun · 22/02/2021 20:42

I didn't think it was bad at all! It was beautifully filmed, and I enjoyed the acting. I especially liked how it stuck to the book so faithfully (while tweaking for screen drama purposes). An excellent watch.

addicted2spaniels · 22/02/2021 20:45

We just watched the last episode.

I don't think DH has ever been so confused Grin.

It was great up to episode 4.

BitOfFun · 22/02/2021 21:39

Ah, my husband loved it- said it was much more interesting than the usual dramas I make him watch with me Grin.

I love your name, spaniels- I hope you can show us some pics..?

CherryValanc · 23/02/2021 06:46

I just finished last night. Certainly didn't see that coming. Spent the whole time trying to work out Adele and David's relationship - who was controlling who. t was so weird but oddly made sense of everything in the end.

Only thing that bugged me was why I thought
I had seen Louise's friend before. No clue where I've seen the actress before but see just seemed so familiar.

Didn't notice any clumpy shoes on Adele (Also felt that actress reminded me of someone but found out she is Bono's daughter. Looks like her mum!)

BloggersBlog · 23/02/2021 07:00

The Adele actress (Eve Hewson?) reminds me of Emily Blunt. Very similar features, beautiful

Yes she's Bono's daughter, had no idea until I looked her up, very beautiful. I agree with you all didnt enjoy the supernatural turn!

midnightstar66 · 23/02/2021 07:37

Still a bit disturbed by the ending, little Adam in the back of the car knowing something isn't right.

BlackCatShadow · 23/02/2021 07:49

I quite enjoyed it, but I found David's accent a bit jarring. I thought it was an interesting watch and at least it didn't end on a cliffhanger like so many Netflix series.

I also really liked Louise's style.
