Join the MN Coronation Street thread today and you too could have an exciting lifestyle where you earn your own money, set your own hours and most definitely do not end up eating the chocolate off the Bounty at the bottom of the Celebrations tub out of desperation! Absolutely not a pyramid selling scheme, hun!

I remember him from a cop show but I never had twisted thoughts. I'm more likely to want a nice cup of tea with June Ackland.

Johnny was good looking back in the day. He had a small role in Love Actually too.

I LOVE how Gail's father died and within days she had her inheritance in her bank and could buy a house! My DM died a month ago and we've only just been able to send off the forms for probate! Grin oh and I also love how Craig became a copper so easily and seems to be the only one in the whole area...

Ooh younger Johnny was pretty shaggable. Mark Frost has got too much forehead in that photo.

Mark Frost is better older I think, although his voice puts me off.

I’d pick Mark Frost over young Johnny anytime! Just can’t sed the attraction for Johnny now or ever. Or what Jenny sees in him.

In real life Mark Frost sounds nothing like that. I think he’s lovely Blush

Can't stand Ray's voice, it's like he has a gobstopper in his mouth the whole time.

I think Mark Frost has sleazy Ray down perfectly.
The way he rolls his Rs is awful but sooo good as Ray is a complete skank.

Im still team Peter Wink

Mike Baldwin and co didn't speak Northern, Adam doesn't. My neighbours here have accents depending on their background. Pretend Northern is strange.

Report
Templetree · 12/02/2021 12:52

Is anyone doing pretend northern
apart from Ray?
Hes not far off a mancunian accent though.

I think the only actors who had a mancunian accent are Rob James-Collier who was from Salford, Michelle Keegan and Julia Goulding ( Shona)

The rest are from various areas of the north and midlands and are speaking in their usual accent.
So you had Liam from Manchester with all the other Connors speaking differently Grin

Oh for god's sake, I have watched Corrie for decades and all of Downton Abbey including the film, and I have just looked up Rob James-Collier and realised that he was Liam and Barrow.

I tell you, this face blindness thing is real. I have it with cars as well. And houses. Possibly whole planets Blush

To be fair, Corrie isn’t set in Manchester. It’s set in a town near Manchester. So the accent wouldn’t necessarily be Mancunian. I live ten miles outside Manchester- I don’t have a Manchester accent. There are influences from Lancashire, Yorkshire and Derbyshire in the local area.. The borders of many countries come close to Manchester and you hear a lot of variations.

Isnt Weatherfield Greater Manchester though and based on Salford ?

Im from Xyz in London.
So a named place but also London ifyswim.

Report
Templetree · 12/02/2021 13:55

Well Im shocked as I always though Corrie was set in or very near to Manchester.
So actually the accents make sense then if different influences in a small area?

One of the worst fake accents comes from Audrey. The "cobbles" relates to a particular area of Lancashire and I know the accents very well as have family members who lived there all their lives. Audrey and that voice grate on me when I hear her say eg. Luvlehhh (lovely) in such an exaggerated way.

One last thing, please don't let Peter die!!!!!! I love Peter!

Yes Weatherfield is in Greater Manchester. So is the town where I’m from. But I don’t have a Manchester accent. That’s my point. That it’s possible to live pretty close to Manchester and not have a Manchester accent. Derdrie Barlow and Kevin both come from the area where I’m from. Kevin’s accent does sound a bit more Manchester nowadays.

But a lot of actors seem to put on an accent, there's no reason why a character can't be from Leeds or Birmingham or Carlisle and speak normally, in the actors voice. The not great northern accent is tiresome.
Big Jim spoke normally so he did, and chucked in a wee dialect word sometimes.

Ah ok thanks Honeyroar

I thought Audreys exaggeration was due to being wife of Alf Roberts OBE, Mayor of Weatherfield and was to signify she was posher than everyone else.
She is one of my favourites.

Likewise when Sally talks about Hale BarnsGrin
