I know Gail and Eileen have had their stories but blaming her for being upset over the funeral, really?

What did Geoff spend the money on he can’t have had that many pay for sex nights out in hotels? He had a car to sell for starters? Plus the money the granddaughter isn’t paying in rent. Really sad story line for any DV victims watching.

eggandonion · 24/02/2021 21:13

I'm sure people in these situations have all kinds of financial horrors to deal with. Did we find out if he was divorced from elaine or Tim's fake mum?

SophieB100 · 24/02/2021 21:15

More rubbish.
Peter in that hat. Why, just why?
I remember Gail's dad - here's a link if anyone wants to see him:

I'm going to stop watching it soon unless it improves.

excelledyourself · 24/02/2021 21:19

Ted's funeral is the most pointless storyline. I get he had to die so that Gail could buy the house, but other than that, the whole storyline is ridiculous. Buried in a shambolic funeral, in a strange town, without his husband present, with the streets most recently bereaved residents fighting for a go of his hearse?

I genuinely need answers! Is that it over? What was the actual point?

MrsKFZeeeeee · 24/02/2021 21:37

The driving the hearse scene, running over the flowers and Eileen's defensive actions were crass, and in bad taste. They have missed the mark completely. IMO.
Who is approving this tosh?

theresnoonequitelikegrandma · 24/02/2021 21:39

I'm feeling strangely sad about the shit show that Corrie has become. I was born in Salford in the same year that it was created and have been a devoted viewer for most of my adult life...........but now I'm not sure I can bear to watch it any more.

What happened to the fabulous characters and brilliant writing? Is there any hope that things can get better?

Please God, don't tell me it can get worse?? ConfusedConfused

DahliaMacNamara · 24/02/2021 21:51

With those camera angles, I thought Gail and Audrey were sitting around a wicker laundry basket at first. And Simon's spliff looked like something my gran would have used to light a fire.
I'm going to try to wipe the funeral farce from my memory.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 24/02/2021 22:35

What happened to the fabulous characters and brilliant writing?

I wish I knew.

It used to be a very character-driven programme. Once the characters were established, the writers didn't let them do anything out of character because they knew that in RL people just don't behave like "that" - or very rarely, and when someone did act in an unexpected way, there was a reason and an explanation - and things didn't just happen for the shock value.

It was comforting and believable and the viewers cared about the characters - they felt they were friends (many people believed they were real). That shows the quality of the writing. I doubt that many of us would be too heartbroken if a character died off now. Apart from anything else, they come and go every two minutes. There is always someone dying, feigning death, or having a son./daughter/unknown relative appearing out of the woodwork somewhere.

Clawdy · 24/02/2021 23:22

That dreadful line from Mary "Hello, lovely lesbians! " It was beyond ridiculous, and the actress must have read that line in her script, and groaned.

And Dev inviting his daughter to “get jiggy” with her girlfriend on the sofa. Hmm

Again I ask, who is writing this shit?

Akire · 24/02/2021 23:25

That was awful, Mary would never gone on to cafe and said hello to the lovely Gays to Billy and Paul Hmm

The line about that spliff and fire lighter was funny. How stoned would they be after that!

Thank you for the Ted link but even after reading it I am none the wiser. I can not remember him at all. Watching Classic Corrie is far more entertaining these days. I miss Mike Baldwin. When Bradley Walsh took over the factory boss role as Baldwin's nephew(?) I thought he was excellent. Rita and Mavis in the corner shop were brilliant. Some say nostalgia aint what it used to be but I disagree. Grin
RAOK · 24/02/2021 23:48

I started watching Corrie again when the coercive control storyline started. I’ve already decided I will stop watching as soon as lockdown is over.

MerylStropp · 25/02/2021 00:00

A bit surprised at the idea of a community centre being privately owned, tbh...

Akire · 25/02/2021 00:04

It was a house she bought. Well a downstairs of a house/old shop front. It hasn’t done anything for a year as was rented by the factory to pack knickers in. Which they should have been generously paying rent towards. Was surprised she suddenly thinks is amazing resource.

Roussette · 25/02/2021 07:08

That line from Mary was excrutiating. It just wasn't her I don't think.

Yes, agree about the corner shop. Mavis and Rita used to be in there, someone would come in for a bag of gobstoppers, they'd have a chat about next to nothing with Mavis and Rita, it would be funny and gentle and daft.
All that is gone. Now it's someone's brother/nephew/friend coming in to rob the till.

Corrie was full of those sort of scenes and it's what made it as far as Im concerned. It wasn't all spliffs, break ins, attacks, hospital, prison and bashing someone on the head.

Where's the gentle day to day life gone?

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/02/2021 07:24

It was Rousette.

I long for the days of Minnie Calwell's missing cat, Concepta Hewitt taking no nonsense in the Rovers, the halcyon Mavis and Derek and the canteen of cutlery saga, Percy putting the world to rights, and the iconic Duckworths, and Ogdens, as well as Reg and Maureen Holdsworth who were very much comic characters - but not ridiculous parodies of human beings. They were real, and suffered and strived just as much as the more serious characters.

Corrie was also a soap where many young actors cut their teeth in small parts before going on to greater things - I used to love saying to DH - "Oh look - there's so-and-so! He used to be on Corrie as X - he was such a plain lad but he's really grown into his face hasn't he?" etc.

It was well-written and well-acted - and it's not just hindsight. Being able to watch the classic episodes allows those comparisons to be made and I could weep seeing what we have lost.

Roussette · 25/02/2021 07:58

Yes, and the likes of Derek, pernickety Derek. And Reg, he was a great character. And Norris who was soooo annoying, him and Rita in the shop used to be great characterisation. I think in the years gone by you really got to know the essence of a person... their strengths, their weaknesses, their failings as a human being.

All that is gone, because suddenly on today's Corrie, they do something totally out of character, and the viewer thinks 'WHAT???'

It's all about storylines now. It should be all about the characters.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/02/2021 08:33

Aaaah! Derek! Grin

I well remember one episode when something had (yet again) stopped him andMavis getting married, and he said (boldly).

"Well in that case, if that's how the world treats us we'll live together openly without benefit of clergy." (or words to that effect)

and Mavis answered "We most certainly will NOT!"

The storylines were much more concentrated around the older characters, too - nowadays it is all the kids and if they aren't breeding quickly enough on the street*, then they bus in a yet another new teenager who the character didn't know about because they were the result of a one night stand or something.

*Not you Chesney - we know you're doing your best.

By the way - who was Chesney's horrible mother? Cilla was it? She was hilarious!

Roussette · 25/02/2021 08:45

Yes she was funny! The nightmare neighbour from hell !

I remember her and Les in the water bath in their front room and Schmiechel jumping in.😂
Sometimes simple nonsense just works

who has a water bath in their front room. I used to love the ridiculous

ajandjjmum · 25/02/2021 10:54

I always get Cilla and Beth muddled!

Wasn’t it Fred Elliot’s old shop? I’m also surprised Alya thinks it’s the answer to all problems - it’s not like people are desperate for shop space at the moment.

It wasn’t meant to be in the front room - Les hadn’t bothered to check if the bathroom floor could take the weight when he fitted it, so when Schmeichel jumped in, the floor fell in and they ended up in the lounge Grin

Hahaha oh yes, it's all coming back to me!

Cilla and Beth are the spit of each other, I get very confuzzled.

Corrie must be bad at the moment as we are talking about old times. Not current times!

But I will make it current by saying I CANNOT stand Daisy. She's just a horrible character with no redeeming features. Why are the scriptwriters letting her be so vile to everyone she comes into contact with? Carla of old would've wiped the floor with her for grabbing her phone and answering it.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 25/02/2021 12:04

I don’t think they’ve decided if Daisy is going to be a bitch bitch or a comedy bitch. At the moment she’s an uneasy mix of both.
